And you would be wrong. I've lost 50lbs many times. I wrestled in High School and cut weight every year. If you consume fewer calories than you burn you lose weight.

So long term changes like ending the pandemic and reducing the financial incentive for parents to buy junk food would have the effect of lowering the average BMI of a population.

oh boy thats not reality for most. Just do a search most people who struggle with weight loss of any kind regardless of efforts. If it were that easy there wouldnt be all these weight loss programs out there.

It's literally that "easy". But to maintain it, you have to change your lifestyle. That's the hard part.

By removing the subsidies on anything that contributes to making junk food. Don't pay government money to companies who make junk food like we currently do. On average about $700,000 of tax money is paid to each junk food manufacturer. This allows them to sell their junk food at lower prices.

We are literally paying them to make our kids fat.

They will pass it on to the customer. That's the point.

I am painfully aware. I also know if you don't start healthy eating and exercise the weight will never come off.

If you switch your scale from pounds to kilograms you'll weigh less.

This conversation reminds me of a great Terry Pratchett quote - when he described Commander Vime's wife running:

"Lady Ramkin's bosom rose and fell like an empire"

absolutely. Unfortunately its the American way to make things as easy as possible instead just grind out the hard work.
Though this country was founded on hard work, among other things, it has all but disappeared.
When i did physical labor for a living, excavation and digging ditches, i used to love getting paid to work out and worked as hard as i could while most around me did as little as possible to get through the day.
It was frustrating and gratifying simultaneously.

Actually compared to other industrialized nations Americans work longer hours, take fewer vacations, and get fewer benefits like maternity leave and sick time.

Working longer doesnt equate to working harder.
Would it be we work longer because we get less done per hour?
