    • Tencent, China's second biggest company, has an 'Epidemic Situation Tracker'
    • Screengrabs purport to show leaked figures on the conglomerate's website
    • Lists death toll at a staggering 24,589 - more than 80 times the official figures

I can’t personally confirm or deny anything, but many of the leaked videos coming out of China, especially Hubei Province, are bone-chilling. People being violently forced into quarantine vans, dragged kicking and screaming. Entire apartment buildings being locked from the outside/doors welded shut with people inside. Thousands of quarantined/locked in people yelling from their high rise apartment buildings in unison. People collapsing dead on the sidewalks. Empty streets in Beijing and Shanghai, two of the busiest cities in the world. 87 more dead this morning is the official report, which many are questioning.

I don’t know the actual severity of this thing and I definitely don’t want to be the arbiter of any false information. I’m wondering if anyone else is seeing the things I’m seeing online and what is your take? I want to not believe it because it’s so frightening, but these countless videos/reports from the region have me a little shaken, I’m not gonna lie.

Five MILLION people were able to flee Wuhan before it was put under quarantine and head to neighbouring Chinese provinces - taking the deadly coronavirus with them
    • Wuhan was put under quarantine on January 23 - but millions had already fled
    • The mayor estimated 5 million left the city, taking the coronavirus with them
    • Analysis has revealed the places they fled to match the early spread of the virus

Yes that is exactly what someone who is obviously concerned wanted to hear... Some bullshit fear mongering statistic.

Im paying attention but not swimming in news articles. I like to give it more than a few days to a week to see what they are reporting. I look at it like this, they aren’t learning that much about what’s going on in 24 hours. So taking in a plethora of news in that time frame without new information (correct or not) isn’t necessarily going to get you any closer to the understanding that drives you to seek it out.

If what Johnny said is accurate then it is indeed worrisome. Seems like a very brash reaction driven by panic. Hopefully it’s more of a “we don’t know enough” panic, and not a “we know a lot” panic. At the very least keep in mind there are a multitude of scenarios, not just the ‘worst case’.

You do or did work in the grocery industry, how long does it take for store shelves to go bare if deliveries stop? That's what some of these giant cities in China are facing. Cities are locked, blocked, and isolated. It doesn't take much to panic people. Look at the possibility of snow here in Portland. Stores are cleaned out.

In the USA it will take just 2 kids in a major city getting the coronavirus to have officials close down every school in that city. Which is the smart thing to do.

But that's when the problems start....

Your kid gets a cold and you're taking them to the hospital, along with possibly 1000s of other people doing the same thing.

As I've already posted in this thread the triage protocol from the CDC currently for the coronavirus is anyone who presents with flu like symptoms who has been to China or around someone who has been to China is immediately placed in isolation.

Right now we can handle that.

    But....

Add just two or 3 more countries to that list and there are problems. Anyone who has been to Mexico? Great Britain? Australia? Hospitals don't have that many isolation rooms.

But... if it jumps into the regular population and that's when shit gets real. You start trying to isolate everyone in a city that shows up with flu like symptoms? Ain't going to happen. The city will be shut down.

Now I'm not saying that this will happen in the USA, but it's something to be aware of and prepared for.

Coronavirus death toll hits 811 as virus claims more lives than 2003 SARS outbreak - as Beijing starts rounding up sufferers and videos show hazmat suit-clad goons dragging people from their homes
    • A total of 774 died in the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak between 2002 and 2003
    • Comes as a clip believed to be in Changqing Garden, Wuhan, shows man sprinting away from officials
    • Five more Britons, including a 9-year-old boy, have virus in France after one of them went to Singapore
    • Another clip, said to be taken in Suzhou, shows suspected coronavirus sufferers dragged from their homes

I read this as well. If you care to go for a deep, frightening dive, look up Wuhan/Coronavirus videos on live leak. There are a ton of videos claiming to be from the epicenter that are censored on YouTube. I can’t speak for the validity of any of these videos but many appear to be authentic.

Coronavirus has already surpassed the total number SARS cases reported in China during the most contagious and deadly nine-month first phase of that 2002-2003 epidemic. SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome, infected 8,098 people worldwide with 774 official SARS-related deaths.

There is one silver lining: SARS had a fatality rate of 9.6%, according to WHO, compared to the current fatality rate of 2.2% for the coronavirus. However, the death toll is expected to rise as drug companies scramble to come up with a vaccine for the virus. The low fatality rate also helps the virus to spread.

Flying to europe Thursday, should I rock the face mask (maybe a surgical mask) on the plane or in customs or is that overkill? (Flying through Heathrow). I prob will when I come back through LAX's customs. That place is a zoo.

I bought a small lysol spray for the plane.

Pentagon opens 11 new coronavirus quarantine facilities as hospitals already at capacity with flu patients brace for a shortage of beds if the virus spreads in the US
    • The Department of Defense has designated 11 air bases as quarantines
    • So far, more than 800 Americans returning from the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan are quarantined on three bases
    • No additional evacuation flights are scheduled but officials expect a trickle of travelers who have been to Wuhan in the past two weeks to continue
    • With a relatively severe flu season in full-swing, US hospitals are already running out of beds
    • Coronavirus is not spreading in the US yet, but hospital staff area already bracing with 'surge capacity' plans and efforts to conserve face masks
