Republican state legislators in idaho organized a mask burning. Children burned masks while their parents cheered and took videos.

    Teach your children well...

See the post below yours about the B.1.1.7 variant’s exponential growth? That, combined with the one from South Africa and the one from Brazil are the dangers in opening schools too soon, IMO. The studies done by CDC and the results in schools like your grandkids’ reflect what to expect with the original virus, not the new more transmissible ones. Teachers may be vaccinated, but kids aren’t and neither are their families at home. There’s a real risk of blowing things up again.

My understanding now is that schools or public places won't be truly safe to open until next fall and that's only if 85% of the population is vaccinated and everyone follows mask wearing and hand washing protocols .....as to the latter...it's not looking good...the intellectually challenged among us have the attention span of a mosquito in a blizzard

According to Fauci we will achieve herd immunity when we have somewhere between 75% and 80% vaccination rate.

I quoted the song, not sarcastically, at my mother's funeral.

One of the legislators claims to have "done research" which of course is not cited, that wearing masks actually does "damage the soul". Also masks induce anxiety by reminding people of the pandemic. I would have thought the fix was getting pandemic under control, but hell, I'm just a scientist, I never researched "souls".

Wearing a dirty cloth mask and touching it constantly is unhealthy...

Dr Fauci says “There’s no reason to be walking around with a mask. When you’re in the middle of an outbreak, wearing a mask might make people feel a little bit better and it might even block a droplet, but it’s not providing the perfect protection that people think that it is. And, often, there are unintended consequences — people keep fiddling with the mask and they keep touching their face.”

I get it, the most at risk should have been vaccinated first too like many other States did. If the science and experts recommend closing schools across the board until further notice because of more threats then they should step up and be heard.
If they can closely monitor schools as they reopen with criteria that needs to be met that could help. It appears science also indicates the negative impact on kids has been tough.

I’m sure they will be watching the situation, but I am concerned that there’s a potential perfect storm coming that could blow things up quicker than the health officials can react. States are loosening restrictions dramatically in response to reduced cases, the variants are growing exponentially while cases of the original virus remain flat, and spring break is coming with it’s potential as a super-spreader event. All I’m saying is that vigilance is imperative.

When exactly did Dr. Fauci say that? He's been saying the exact opposite for a year, over and over. He did say don't fiddle with mask. But wear it.

Exactly, early on much less was known and it was considered important to reserve masks, which were in short supply, for health workers. It is repeated endlessly by science deniers to try to pretend Dr. Fauci agrees with them.

Yup. No shot intended at HailBlazers, but there's something pretty sad about folks who try to use old information that clearly doesn't conform with current scientific opinions, in an attempt to justify their behaviors. It's also pretty clear that CDC and Fauci really fouled up with their early messaging on masks. Whether that was because they really failed to understand the benefits (which seems doubtful to me), or because they wanted to try to dampen the public's demand for masks in order to save as many as possible for healthcare workers, or more likely, because of pressure from the Trump administration, I guess we'll never know for certain. But it's just incredibly dumb that something so simple and so effective has become such a political football.

Both my parents got the Moderna last weekend at Costco in Tigard. Heard they may be switching to J&J though.

getting vaccinated doesn't mean you're cured...it means you have a better chance of surviving an infection. it also doesn't mean you can't transmit the virus by breathing on someone else which is why vaccinated people need to still wear masks in public until we achieve herd immunity. the only freedom is that I can be around other vaccinated people maskless indoors at a gathering and am less at risk going to the grocery store, etc. What's really a variant of concern is denial and refusal to mask up and get the shot
