It's incomplete news. Most people in MA are vaccinated. And the photo is misleading - at best.

The vaccine isn't changing. Delta is a more dangerous variant than the original.

Geez, that’s horrible!!! Oh, wait, Massachusetts is one of the most highly vaccinated states in the country. 64% fully vaccinated and 73% at least one shot. If you get to 100% vaccinated then 100% of positive tests will be from vaccinated people. And that was just the number from one outbreak in Provincetown. Statewide, the percentage is much lower: “When analyzing the number of overall COVID-19 cases reported by the DPH between July 17 and July 23, the breakthrough cases account for 38.1 percent of all new COVID-19 cases.” https://www.wcvb.com/article/massac...ted-individuals-july-24-2021-update/37172839#

64% of the population that is fully vaccinated persons account for 75% of the total cases. That still seems out of wack.

Another way to say the 36% unvaccinated account for only 25% of the total cases.

The % vaccinated should be higher than the % of cases from those vaccinated. Otherwise the vaccine doesn't seem to do much in preventing transmission.

Possibly by a few percentage points. The lowest estimate I've seen is 80% effective which is still far more effective than most vaccines and easily effective enough to stop the pandemic in its tracks.

And almost no fully vaccinated people are dying or being hospitalized from the Delta variant.

It's not exactly the same, but it's still VERY effective.

*Edit* However, I'm not sure about the reports from Massachusetts... that seems excessive. And terrifying if accurate.

I had my 6mos physical today.

    upload_2021-7-30_13-7-36.png

I've been seeing my doctor for years and really like him. After talking Blazers I fired a bunch of questions about covid.

A few things that really stood out...

He said that at his clinic here in Portland he and other doctors did see many patients with flu last winter. The difference was that people who started getting flu-like symptoms immediately thought they had the rona and rushed to see their doctor. It was their policy to do both a covid test and a flu test but people were coming in much sooner to be treated for the flu because they were concerned about covid. Getting medical attention sooner vs later had a huge effect on how sick people got.

Antibodies: He said it's normal for the human body to stop producing antibodies after getting a vaccine. If you were to test your blood right now you would not see antibodies for all of the vaccines you have had throughout your life. But that does not mean you are not protected from the vaccine. The body produces antibodies when needed. It doesn't produce them all of the time for the hell of it. If you get a virus the body responds to it by producing the antibodies needed to fight it. Vaccines teach your body which antibodies to produce. With the Delta variant the virus is not an exact match to the vaccine so there is a delay in the response but for healthy people, the response is still enough to prevent hospitalization and/or death.

Only sharing what I heard from my doctor, do with it what you wish.

    Did you read the article?

Overall, 274 vaccinated patients with a breakthrough infection were symptomatic, according to the CDC. The most common side effects were cough, headache, sore throat, muscle pain and fever. Among five Covid patients who were hospitalized, four were fully vaccinated, according to the agency. No deaths were reported.

Testing identified the delta variant in 90% of specimens from 133 patients.

We don’t know what the percentage of people in Provincetown is who are vaccinated. Since it’s an urban area, it’s likely higher than the statewide average that includes rural areas. The cases were predominantly men with an average age around 40. The city had lifted the mask mandate, so these are likely guys socializing in enclosed spaces like bars and restaurants while unmasked. With the delta variant being predominant and way more transmissible, it’s not surprising that people were infected. Bear in mind that the efficacy rate is lower for delta, but that the vaccine still keeps you from getting seriously ill. That’s borne out in this case in that out of 883 total cases, only 7 were hospitalized.

CDC FINALLY releases data behind new mask guidance: Study claims vaccinated people who get COVID have same viral levels of Indian 'Delta' variant as the unvaccinated - but only four of 346 people who had shots were hospitalized and none died
    • A new CDC report detailed 469 cases of COVID-19 linked to an outbreak in Provincetown, Massachusetts between July 3 and July 17
    • Of the infections, 74% occurred in fully vaccinated people who had one of the three FDA-emergency approved vaccines and 80% had symptoms
    • Only four of the vaccinated people were hospitalized, two of whom had underlying conditions, and there were no deaths
    • Results showed that vaccinated people who get COVID-19 have same viral levels as the unvaccinated
    • The CDC says this outbreak was behind its recent recommendations for vaccinated Americans to wear masks in indoors places in COVID-19 hot spots

Also, why is it bad to say China Virus, but at the same time "Indian Variant" is ok? Really shows who's controlling the narrative.

Do I really need to mask up again?

I'm fully vaccinated. Everyone I know is fully vaccinated. And frankly I don't give a shit about the idiots who won't get vaccinated.

So why the heck do I need to wear a mask again? What am I missing?

    1. Keeping down the viral load so your body has time to fight the virus.

    2. Reducing the spread of the virus to others, including those who are vaccinated.

It's been named the Delta variant to avoid saying B.137.2.593.394.500.7.q, or the Indian variant.
In my opinion, the Guardian should have said Delta not 'Indian Delta'. But I don't own the Guardian.

You can't avoid the idiots who won't get vaccinated, they are still a danger to your health. The vaccine is not a 100% surefire solution, it just improves your chances (and those of everyone you know). As does a mask (to a lesser degree).
