Cruz gets a shot in the outfield

    "Some folks might have been surprised when Luis Cruz started in left field Friday for the Milwaukee Brewers in an exhibition game against San Francisco.

    Cruz wasn't one of them.

    "I like it out there," he said. "I'm comfortable out there."

    An infielder by trade, and primarily a shortstop, Cruz often played the outfield during winter ball in his native Mexico. In fact, he played outfield in two different Caribbean Series for his country.

    Cruz is vying for a spot on the Brewers' bench this spring, so the decision-makers want to gauge his versatility.

    "If he's going to be our utility guy, then he needs to be able to play some outfield," said manager Ron Roenicke. "We need to have some guys who are versatile.

    "With Corey Hart being down (with an oblique strain), there's going to be some playing time out there for him. All the other guys have played a lot. I'm not keeping somebody else from being out there.""
