Apparently Neil Olshey agrees with me

Montero and Alexander both have spots on the team IMO. Stotts was saying how Monteros transition has to be the hardest because he's dealing with a huge jump from juco to the nba, and on top of that he's got to adjust to a new culture. They're going to be patient with him. Frazier or Pressey is gone. Maybe both.

Seems to me the organization believes Montero is coachable and I expect him to stick

Honestly Frazier hasn't impressed me at all. I watched every summer league game. Didn't impress me then. Didn't impress me yesterday either. Pressey has a real chance to beat him out but no way do both of these guys make the team. Montero didn't even play last game. That tells me he's not in a battle for a spot and they're just going to take it slow with him and allow him to develop in practice

I would like us to take a flyer on Montero for the season. See if he can learn develop his game. The same with Alexander. The Blazers aren't going to attract any diamonds in free agency so as well squeeze some coal and see if we get lucky!

I don't think Alexander's spot is in jeopardy at all. He probably already won a spot with his play in pickups/early training camp. He also has some guaranteed money in the first year of his deal as well I think.

I liked what I saw from Frazier last night and think he will be acceptable as a 3rd string PG. If Dame/CJ has fouls or an injury we will need someone in that spot. Or if we play an unusual opponent that starts trapping us. There is zero chance we cut both Frazier and Pressey. I do think Alexander makes the team.

I believe all of Frazier/Pressey/Alexander/Montero have about $100k guaranteed but the bulk of their contracts can be cut and not paid.

Frazier & Pressey are both non guaranteed. Alexander & Montero both have $100K guaranteed.

From what I've seen of Frazier and Pressey, both bring about the same to the table. As a 3rd string point guard, I don't think either will have any future or current impact to the team. However, Alexander and Montero both have the potential to be impact players in a few years. No reason not to take a look at them this year and see how they progress. Both Alexander and Montero have non guaranteed salaries for next year., so if they don't pan out, they're easy to let go.

More and more, I'm getting the feeling that both Montero and Pressey will get cut (in addition to Johnson).

Think we go into the season with a roster spot open.

Can you help me understand how the open roster spot benefits us? Would we not be able to cut the 15th man at any given time if the open spot were needed? Would Montero's presence in practices somehow be a detriment to the rest of the team as a whole? Do you think Olshey would somehow be less willing to entertain other roster possibilities if that spot were filled by a minimum salary guy rather than unmanned?

Why do you people hate success? I guarantee Montero will help us win 3-4 games in the next five years.

    Good point. I stand corrected.

The cut can always be made at the last minute and the flexibility offered by opening a spot now would be minimal.

Hey, don't you understand how this forum works? Even when you're wrong, you're supposed to hold to that point TO THE DEATH! How else can a true flame war commence?

Damn you and your reasonable response.

Hey I will be the first one gloating if Neil does indeed cut both in a few weeks.

If we keep a 15th man he has to be paid; so by cutting him we save the salary. Montero would take time from the coaches, teammates and staff so it might be better to cut him and focus the basketball development resources on the other 14 players.

But we don't save salary... we're so far under the minimum salary that the money is going to be spent. Why not spend it on a project player with potential?

Disagree here about them being the same. While neither are game changers, Frazier is more "pass first" while Pressly looks to shoot more. Frazier is also a better defender. Frazier is also cheaper.
