D.C. United cutting ties with De Rosario
    [IMG]

Dwayne De Rosario‘s tenure with D.C. United, a 2 1/2-year period that included an MLS most valuable player award, a scoring title and the honor of wearing the captain’s armband, has ended.

The club informed the Canadian attacker Wednesday that it would not exercise the option on his contract — the largest on the roster — and was not planning to offer him a new deal, multiple sources told the Insider.

F.C. Internazionale Milano and D.C. United announce collaborative agreement
    [IMG]

    That didn't take long.

Just weeks after D.C. United co-owner Erick Thohir took over Italian club Inter Milan, a "collaborative agreement to form a strategic partnership" was announced on Monday that will have Thohir's two soccer teams working together.

“We are thankful for the opportunity to work collaboratively with Inter," said D.C. managing general partner Jason Levien (pictured above with Inter VP Angelomario Moratti) in a club statement. "We believe this relationship will prove a significant benefit to D.C. United's growth and long-term achievement.”

According to the clubs, the partnership will include: "sharing of team, organizational and competitive best practices ... subject to relevant rules and regulations of the appropriate governing bodies."

D.C. United will retain Olsen, Kasper
    [IMG]

Despite winning three of 34 MLS matches this season, D.C. United has decided to retain Coach Ben Olsen and General Manager Dave Kasper, the Insider has learned.

Club management reached the decision over the weekend following a month-long review and evaluation of the pair’s strategic plans to turn around the team after a 3-24-7 campaign, a source close to the situation said Monday.

DC United send international roster spot to Montreal Impact for veteran midfielder Davy Arnaud
    [IMG]

D.C. United's young midfielders have a new mentor, one who knows Major League Soccer back to front.

On Tuesday, the Montreal Impact announced they had traded club captain Davy Arnaud to United in exchange for an international roster spot during the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Last season, his second as Montreal's captain, Arnaud scored one goal and added five assists in 24 games, but salary cap implications forced the Quebec club to move a player who had been with the club since they entered MLS in 2011.

"It was going to be challenging for us to bring Davy back with the salary cap and 2013 being the final year of his contract," sporting director Nick De Santis said in a statement. "He has always been a true professional and leader both on and off the field. He has served his role of captain well. We'd like to thank him for all he has done over the last two years with the Impact and we wish him all the best in the future."

DCU deal for Seattle Sounders, USMNT striker Eddie Johnson
    [IMG]

Eddie Johnson wanted to get his due. D.C. United just wanted their groove back.

Both sides got what they needed on Tuesday.

Weeks after closing the books one of the most anemic offensive seasons in Major League Soccer history, D.C. announced they have landed the veteran striker from the Seattle Sounders, giving the club one of the top scoring threats of the past two seasons in MLS and a likely US national team contributor in the World Cup next summer.

Johnson, 29, scored a combined 23 goals during the past two seasons for Seattle after returning to the league in February 2012. He heads to D.C. United in exchange for an undisclosed amount of allocation money.

“Eddie is coming off a terrific year with Seattle and the USMNT, and we are very pleased to have acquired him,” said D.C. United general manager Dave Kasper in a press release. “He is one of the most dangerous attacking players in MLS, and we believe he will be an important contributor to our team.”

    Reports:
DC United stadium proposal expected to be delivered to city council before Christmas

In a big step forward for D.C. United's plan to build a soccer-specific stadium in the city's Buzzard Point neighborhood, DCist reported on Tuesday that the city administrator's office is set to have a stadium proposal submitted to the D.C. City Council by Christmas, enabling the Council to review it in early January.

Then, on Wednesday, another report indicated that D.C. mayor Vincent Gray put forward a legislative package on the stadium by the end of the week that would cover the land swap necessary for United to acquire the land in Buzzard Point that will eventually house the new stadium:

Volkswagen ends D.C. United jersey sponsorship
    [IMG]

D.C. United’s jersey will have a new look next season after Volkswagen declined to exercise an option to remain as the MLS club’s primary sponsor, a multimillion-dollar deal in place for six years. The iconic VW logo featured prominently on United’s shirts and across various levels of team branding since 2008.

“Volkswagen has realigned its strategic sports marketing objectives and moved out of team level sponsorships,” Scott Vazin, vice president of brand communications, told the Insider on Tuesday. “Volkswagen continues to work closely with D.C. United to explore alternative levels of involvement with the team.”

Philadelphia Union, DC United swap Jeff Parke for Ethan White,
    flip flop allocation order spots

D.C. United have pulled the trigger on yet another bold offseason transaction on Tuesday, finalizing a trade with their I-95 rivals the Philadelphia Union.

United announced on Tuesday that the two clubs have swapped center backs as well as allocation assets, with Union veteran Jeff Parke heading to D.C. and United Homegrown Ethan White (above), along with the Black-and-Red's place atop the allocation order, moving north in return.

As a result, United would move down to Philly's current sixth spot in that list.

The Black-and-Red to send minimum of four players on long-term loans in 2014

In conjunction with the groundbreaking multi-year deal unveiled last year between MLS and USL PRO, the Richmond Kickers and D.C. United today announced that the clubs have extended their affiliation agreement through the 2014 season.

“Last year's partnership with Richmond was mutually beneficial and we are very pleased to be working together again in 2014,” said Dave Kasper, D.C. United General Manager. “Our younger players who went on loan last season gained valuable experience that can only be realized by playing in professional games. We have had a long-standing relationship with the Kickers and we look forward to making this another win-win year.”

    D.C.'s Seaton On Upward Path
United youngster gained valuable experience with Kickers

    Thursday, February 6, 2014

BRADENTON, Fla. – It’s been a little more than a year since Michael Season became the fifth, and youngest, Homegrown Player in D.C. United’s history. Since then, he’s scored on his professional debut, made his debut in Major League Soccer, trained with Inter Milan and made his debut for the Jamaican national team.

Now in his second professional training camp, Seaton has added size and continues to grow as he works toward earning regular minutes for United in MLS. As he looked back on his first professional season, though, the time spent with the Kickers was a good, and valuable, experience.

“With me being young, I was 16, and scored my first professional goal at Richmond in my first game,” Seaton said this week at IMG Academy. “Hearing I was going to Richmond, it wasn’t like I was upset, I just know I have to work on getting to this level, to the MLS level, and Richmond helped tremendously. If I go again, I wouldn’t feel bad about that because I need to develop.”

Seaton’s debut came on the road against the Wilmington Hammerheads last April. After Luke Vercollone had given Richmond the lead in the second half, Seaton put the game away late as his speed took him away from the Hammerheads’ defense on a breakaway and he coolly slotted home his finish a little under a month before his 17th birthday.

“It was awesome,” Seaton said. “It was in the last minute and it basically secured the entire game, that we were going to win it. It was awesome and I wanted to score before I turned 17, so that was just a plus.”

DC United sign Spanish left back Christian Fernandez Salas
    [IMG]

D.C. United added another left back to their ranks Friday, announcing that the club had signed La Liga veteran Christian Fernández Salas. Per league and club policy, the terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Fernández, 28, has been without a club since December after appearing in only four games for Almería this season. He had helped Almeria earn promotion to La Liga in 2012-13 by making 36 starts and playing every minute of the club's four promotion playoff games.

    The Tradition Continues
United and Season Ticket Holders celebrate the all-new kit

    Tradition. Black-and-Red. D.C. United.

The technology behind the jerseys might change with time, but we remain the Black-and-Red.

We are proud to reveal our new kit for 2014. In keeping with Tradition, D.C. United's new jersey is mostly black, made of adidas' Adizero fabric technology. Our black kit might be the lightest in United's history, but still boasts "Tradition" on the back collar, keeping the Club's classic roots and values visible and clear. The secondary logo is seen on the red neck tape inside the collar, and the pattern of our eagle's wings is embossed in the adidas 3-stripe down the sleeve. Additionally, as teased via social media, the hip tag on the left side of the jersey is our all-black secondary logo.

DC United finalizing jersey sponsorship deal with government contractor Leidos, Inc.

After five years with Volkswagen, D.C. United are reportedly set to feature a new sponsor on their jerseys for the 2014 season.

According to a report Monday by Steven Goff of The Washington Post, Leidos, Inc. – a government contractor, engineering and health company based in Reston, Va. – is finalizing a deal with the club to become the team's primary sponsor. The company would replace Volkswagen, which had a five-year deal with D.C. that the car manufacturer ended in December.

    2014 DC United Preview:
    Bouncing back from record-setting futility

Can EJ lead the way? Above and beyond everything else, last year's D.C. team was defined by its inability to score, with just 22 goals on the season. The man tasked with remedying that is USMNT and MLS veteran Eddie Johnson, who banged home 23 goals over the past two years in Seattle. Of course, with EJ, it's less about talent than it is about chemistry – especially now that he's, unquestionably, the man in the spotlight.
