I guess I should just make a thread here. Basically the power rankings are living. They are based on a statistical formula. There will be new results daily. It will start off a little odd once we get into the season, not every team will be included in the power rankings until they play their first game. The key with these power rankings is that with the formula, they are supposed to reach an equilibrium point by the end of the season, and be able to give a strong indicator of which team's are best positioned to win a championship.
Here were the preseason powerrankings. http://www.sportstwo.com/dabullz/09-30-08-pre-season-power-rankings Now here is one thing I found interesting. Hoopsworld had an article called "Starting to Worry" (http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=10305) They featured 4 teams. Miami Heat, Charlotte Bobcats, Milwaukee Bucks, and Chicago Bulls, which all are doing poorly in preseason. The model I use for the power rankings has the Bulls as the 6th most likely team to win the championship out of the Eastern Conference teams. Now the Bulls haven't gotten blown out yet in preseason. Ben Gordon has only played in one game, and the Bulls looked really good in Gordon's one game, and that is there only win. So I think as long as Gordon stays healthy, the Bulls should stay where they are. The model predicts that the Bobcats, Bucks, and Heat are the 12th, 13th, and 14th most likely teams to win the championship out of the Eastern Conference. The Bucks, Bobcats, and Heat played so poorly last year that the model doesn't think that major acquisitions like Richard Jefferson or Michael Beasley will give those teams a huge bounce, as they have so much ground to make up to be a good team.
It's all statistical. As the season goes on, the power rankings will get into more and more of a better equilibrium. It is only based on one night's game, so these rankings aren't very important yet. Overall, the Lakers were the most dominant team yesterday, then Chicago, then Boston, then Cleveland, then Milwaukee, then Portland. Boston is still ahead of Chicago in the powerrankings based on the strength of their performance in recent years. The sample sizes are incredibly small right now, so there isn't a whole lot to read into things yet, but like in anything statistical like this, it's always good to start of strong, and Boston had a pretty good start to the season, just LAL were way more dominant.
I understand the Lakers were more dominant but their opponent was weaker than ours. Cavs > Blazers any day of the week. But I understand whats you're saying about statistics and that it will change when they have played a few more games.
Yeah please update it here daily. I'd love to see what happens to the Celtics in the next few games. lol
After tonight's mashing of the Bulls, I'd expect Celtics to be #2. Can't see them passing up LA at #1 though.
