Guys, "Rose Rule" isn't a bonus. It's a clause in the CBA that allows players coming off their rookie contracts to not be limited to the 0-6 year max when they sign "max extensions". As many have stated, his "max contract" value hasn't been set (at $24M per year or whatever) and won't be until after the July Moratorium and new cap number comes out. But his PERCENTAGES of the cap have been (in this case 27.5% vs the 25% mandated by CBA for non-Rose maxes) And it's not quite a full 25/27.5% of the cap. If the cap was $100M, due to some odd CBA accounting stuff, he won't get the full $27.5M. But that's another post.
Guys, the only thing you need to know about the rose rule is that the Blazers will lose about 2.5 million in cap room this summer. That may seem insignificant, but before this happened we were only about 400k off being able to offer a max to a tier 2 max player (Horford/Durant) while still keeping Leonard, Harkless, and Crabbe. (Which we could have gotten if we waived one of Alexander/Montero). Now we are around 3 million off, and will have to lose one of those players in the off chance we secure a commitment from Horford or someone else.
Getting Dame on the All-NBA list was important though. We get some street cred with the other free agents, I think.
So after releasing Roberts, we are exactly $2.5mil short of Horford's Max. Dame's $2.5mil. Wow. Signing Leonard and Harkless to $6mil each gives us exactly $2.5mil, and Horford back in play. Maybe Horford would pull a Lillard and play for $23mil? Stranger things have happened. I don't know what, but there must be something.
Sooks. But... We don't commit to Dame last year.... After the season we had... Y'all bitches would be all, " We had a franchise player locked and wanted to be here - why didn't we commit?" Can't have it both ways. If a top-level FA wants to be here, we have the ability to make it happen. Signing Dame when we did won't mean a thing.
What's the point in signing Leonard if we already have Horford, Plums, Ed and Vonleh? Similarly, whats the point in signing Harkless if we already have Durant, Aminu, Crabbe and Patty C? If we have a legit shot at Horford, we can afford to let Leonard dangle in UFA. Same with KD and Harkless. I doubt either is an option, so this is still insignificant in my mind. On paper, it might seem like a difference maker, but in reality, not so much.
Has there ever been another team that has had 2 all NBA players in 5 years that didn't make the AS game? I'm not sure how easy it would be to figure out but I want to see what team after us has the longest between two players that made an all nba team but didn't make the AS game.
I think Dame is setting the trend and we will be the new SA. Players will sign for less to play with a leader/winner like Dame. Before any of you comment... NO! IM NOT GONNA WAKE THE FUCK UP!!!!
