Well here, I'll clean up your assumptions as well, I DO have Native American friends that these symbols offend..... but you can go back to reading your polls..... The more you know.

Yes, because a handful of friends is the "majority"...and sorry to bust your bubble but yes, I have friends/acquaintances and have "Indian" blood in my family history and the "majority" that I've spoken with about it could care less...in fact most of them think it's kinda humorous.
...but you can go back to your handful of friends and think that you speak for everyone if it helps you to believe you are taking the moral high ground in some way and helps you to feel better about yourself...but regardless, I'm not here for your validation.

Oh I’ve said nothing that demands or needs validation or to have need to make myself feel better. And the last thing I do is speak for everyone. Never have or will claim that.

You have friends that are from India? I don’t think we were talking about them. We were talking about Native Americans right?

Don Lemon was just talking to Stephen Jackson about a similar thing. Jackson was using anti-semitic tropes and justifying it by saying the guy he was talking to was Jewish and was not offended. But the tropes themselves are offensive whether or not his intentions are offensive or not.

Same applies here, as far as I'm concerned. It is an offensive term used by the colonizers. Whether or not it is anecdotally accepted isn't so much the point, I don't think.

EDIT: I decided to look up the term on Merriam-Webster's dictionary and the results are pretty clear, I'd say:

    Definition of redskin
    usually offensive
    : AMERICAN INDIAN

Usually offensive says it all, no?

My God...why are you purposely being obtuse?...did the quotation marks that I clearly used when say "Indians" totally escape you? Did you really have no idea what/who I was referring to? Hate to break it to you but "Native Americans" seldom if ever refer to themselves as "Native Americans". Instead, most refer to themselves as "Indian" or even more precise and separate tribal divisions such as Sioux, Pawnee, Cherokee, etc...but you wanna bust my chops for using a common term like "Indian"?...seriously?

You were the one who brought up your "friends", not me, as if they are some sort of weapon that gives you some sort of insight that you seem to think I'm somehow devoid of?...which as I illustrated by citing the other side of the coin by pointing to my experience with my own equally irrelevant "friends".

HCP, I've read enough of your posts to know that you're no dumbass, well, neither am I. What we have here is an impasse and I don't think we're gonna get agreement here.
SOOO, to avoid an unnecessary shit storm, I am respectfully bowing out of this convo.

    ...peace.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
A lot of people claim that the vast majority Native Americans are fine with the "Redskins" name and logo because the Washington Post did a couple of polls (a few years apart) and each time found that 90% of Native Americans don't consider it an issue.

The problem is that those Washington Post surveys weren't at all scientific and had a lot of flaws. UC Berkeley and the University of Michigan, in conjunction, did a much more rigorous study and had a much different outcome. In a study of over 1000 respondents, about half said it was offensive. Roughly 65% said "tomahawk chop" motions are offensive and 73% said they were offended by fans imitating Native American dances.

Here's an article about the Berkeley/Michigan study, and here's an article detailing why the difference between this study and the WaPo studies.

I'm sympathetic with your intent but I would have worded it differently.

I had a wonderful friend D Davalos (Apache Indian) that used to say this at appropriate times, and he said it was an act of respect of opposing views and showing courtesy, rather than feeding the flames of aggression.

My God, compared with all the other international and national news including news about the death count in the spread of Covid-19 infection, this is a really big deal. Name put off until later, you say, wow, just wow, I'm going to put down the other news and concentrate on this. And to think, I was going to waste my time learning more about how the Universe is expanding faster than the speed of light.

Sounds like they are going to be announcing a new name next month but I gotta be honest, I kind of like the Washington Football Team name. It grew on me. Anyone have any guesses at what they will go with? Probably the Admirals or something.
