No, it only matters in the year it's signed. There are predetermined raises (7.5% I think?) but those numbers never change once the contract is signed.

Dame's legitimately one of the best spoken, superstars that sports have ever seen.

Thank you again for another great post! Screw Google, I have you! Lol.

My biggest take on this- Whiteside has had problems in the past (that we all know and have worried about). Dame has already talked to him about it. My prediction- Hassan is going to be on-board with the team culture and support each and every other teammate, and the coaching staff. (Dame pretty much says this). He is going to explode and have his biggest career year ever. Right here, right now. HUGE....

The more I hear from him, the more I appreciate how lucky we are to have him here. Even when he gets in his late 30's.... If he still wants to play, we have got to keep him.

Ive said it before and I'll say it again:

We will never have another man like this put on a trailblazers uniform.

Hes the best we will ever have.

And hes pretty much the best we will ever have on the court too.

    Alright — I’ll say it.

    Does Dame deserve it? Yes.

    Is Dame worth it? Yes.

Is this *really* in the best interest of the franchise *winning*? Not in my opinion (in my dream world.)

Paying that absurd amount of money for *one*’player significantly hinders the ability to construct a team around said player.

MJ and LeBron in their prime are the only players that are realistically worth this kinda cash in my opinion.

I’d also add this — a lot of non-super max guys aren’t worth the max either — yet still get it.

You gotta do what you gotta do to retain your players and keep talent.

But realistically, this kinda cash should be reserved for someone who virtually guarantees you a shot at the chip // multiple time MVP winners.

Not saying I think he is on the same level of the example I’m about to use (he is much better) but imagine if Kemba for the super max and was eligible for it.

I think the super max might actually hinder small market teams more than help them.

Once again - Dame deserves it, I would’ve given it to him, he is worth it — but in my *ideal* NBA... a lot of these players wouldn’t even sniff a “max” contract, let alone a super max. It’s getting slightly out of hand in my opinion.

It’s kinda like opening the flood gates to the hall of fame. At some point everyone who knows how to dribble a ball is gonna be in the hall of fame and it begins to lose its luster.

    How much is Dame worth?

Should we just let him walk then?

Biggest no-brainer supermax ever. Very, very lucky to have him.

It’s more a discussion centered on the viability of the “super max contract” than it is Dame.

But okay, great response, very valuable insight.

Not ecstatic about the percentage of the salary cap going to just one person on a team.

With that said, if anyone deserves it it is Dame. Rather give him the money than see him want to go somewhere else. Best (non championship) thing to ever happen to this franchise is having Dame here.

If Dame is happy, I'm happy.

The supermax can put franchises in a weird position. It is hard to find Stars heck it can be hard to find fringe Stars.

When you get one in a market like Portland you basically have to do everything to keep them happy, and so yeah they have to give it to Dame and I know people don't love CJ but he’s gonna get paid too if they cant trade him for another fringe all star type.

It can kind of freeze your teams ability to build a quality roster though. Its hard to win with a bad roster, its also hard to win without stars.

Id have given Dame that contract if I was in their shoes and it would not have really scared me. I think he deserves it and they’ll at least be competitive while Dame is here so even if they arent contenders towards the end of the contract keeping them as a playoff team is still valuable financially to the team.

Also its interesting when we talk about what players are worth, we (the general we) look at several guys and think they’re overpaid and sure some probably are, but theres a lot more to being a valuable asset in the NBA then just box scores too, some guys would have gotten the same contract somewhere else, and in those cases thats just what the market set their value too.

    I did actually.

    1) Just because you think the rule should be different it doesn't change reality.

    2) When you say you think Dame deserves the money that seems like lip service when you then go on to explain why he doesn't.

    1) I didn’t say the rule should be different, I said that the super-max (and other max contracts) are getting out of hand — and I recognize teams *have* to pay them in order to retain stars — but sooner, rather than later, it will hinder the ability to win significantly.

    2) Are your Floyd Mayweather Jr.? Jesus how many times did I say he is worth it, I would’ve given it to him — and never said he doesn’t deserve it.

I think Derek Zoolander might be opening a school for ya bud.

That is quite an explosion, right after a 4 an 0 stuffing in the finals. Same old issues to face at that level as seen year after year. Same coach, same system with a few new faces....

I agree with everything you said.

My sole point is that at some point there is diminishing returns on a super max contract — I.e. if Kemba got one and was eligible — and at some point a smart owner is gonna say “yeah, we could pay you all this money, but it ain’t worth it. We will risk offering you the normal max with an extra year (per CBA rules) but not the whole meal deal” (I said this isn’t the case with Dame — and compared him to Kemba for this reason — someone I don’t think you could give that money too). The reason I posted it here is because seeing someone get 50 mill in a season kinda puts things in a different perspective for me when other “max” contract guys just got 25-30.

My issue is this: The supermax contract doesn’t let the market determine your value. It’s designed to prevent the market from determine your value by paying you such an absurd amount.

So — small market teams — out of fear are going to have to give super max contracts to players who wouldn’t sniff that value in the open market (since another team couldn’t offer them that kinda money anyway). So out of fear, they’re going to have to act out of desperation, and probably lose all flexibility and ability to surround said player with a decent roster.

Like I said — I would’ve done it for Dame — but imagine Kemba was eligible, if I was MJ, I would’ve said hell no you’re not getting the super max.

I think this whole super max thing is going to be like the massive spike in the cap — and sooner or later — someone is gonna catch on and be like, ya, we just can’t build a team in this situation (especially with the hard cap).

Once again — for other readers — this isn’t just about Dame and the Blazers - it’s about the long term viability of paying a player that quantity of money around the league.

(I did say in my “dream world” — which acknowledges not reality — that there would be 2 players who are actually worth paying this sum of money, imo.)

My reading comprehension is fine. What I have an issue with is that when you say Dame deserves it but also say things like only players that are guaranteed a chance at a championship deserve to get the super max.

You're also trying to explain why the super max is flawed for small market teams but are now saying you aren't trying to say the rule should be different.
