So the big question isn't why haven't we signed a midfielder--it should be why did this all come down to the wire?
@AAllenSport: Both John Cross (The Mirror) and Matt Law (Express) are claiming that Arsenal have identified Mikel Arteta as the number one midfield target. Matt Law tweets: "Hearing Arsenal gone in strong this arvo for Arteta - think he's one." Backed up by John Cross: "Hearing #AFC bang in for Arteta, very hopeful of getting deal done before deadline."
Arteta is 29 and won't factor into our long-term plans, so I can't envision Wenger spending a lot on him. The threshold for a stopgap midfielder seems like it wouldn't be higher than £10m.
forgive my OT ignorance. But with Santos here does that mean we arent/wont be linked with Baines anymore?
@AAllenSport: John Cross now claims we've made a bid of £10 million for Arteta although in the interest of reporting all sides of story BBC chief correspondent Phil McNulty claims he was told that no approach has been made.
Arsenal reportedly put in a £4m bid with incentives yesterday that has gone up out of necessity. £4m for Arteta? Taking the piss?
Speaking of former Gunners, David Bentley is on his way down to West Ham. Can't see that going wrong...
Augusto deal rumoured to cost £18m. This one came out of nowhere. Starting to see other sites picking it up now.
Everton are so indebted that any funds from a sale would go to the bank, meaning selling just one player would weaken the squad for nothing. Arteta deal not sounding as likely.
Augusto - 23, Brazilian, three caps for senior team, tall (6'2"), plays an attacking midfield role or along the right side. Good passer. Injury prone.
Bayer want €20m for Augusto, who was spotted at Heathrow before being shuttled over to Emirates. He's supposedly pushing hard for the transfer to happen, as evidenced by his last-minute presence in London. Arsenal might not spend £18m on a 29-year old Arteta but on a 23-year old Augusto? Possibly.
"I had a great time with Werder and I have a lot to thank the club for. With this transfer to London a dream has come true, taking another step in my career. I have always considered the English Premier League an intriguing challenge." Mertesacker His Aunt in London got him an Arsenal kit when he was a kid, which got him started liking the team. Oddly familiar to my own experience. Hard to explain the impact a nice jersey can have on a kid.
Everton manager David Moyes is set to make his first signing of the transfer window by bringing the Argentine striker Denis Stracqualursi to Goodison Park on a season-long loan deal.
David Moyes is thought to want to keep Arteta at Goodison Park, but the Everton manager knows the club need to raise funds to ease their financial woes. Arteta is thought to be keen on a move to the Emirates, despite interest from several sides in Spain.
