Oh Minstrel, if only the world was that simple huh? How can you objectively look at his body of work and tell me with a straight face that everything (or even 1/4th) of the stuff that he throws out is sincere?

So, no, not everyone can be lumped into either category #1 or #2.

I don't understand how your assertion leads to your conclusion.

I almost always ignore him, but I've gotten pissed a few times and responded to him. It happens. That doesn't mean you can tell how I feel about him because I replied to his post.

If you believe he's a troll, why do you encourage him by responding to and about him every day? If you really believed he was a troll, you wouldn't act to make him post more. Hence, you either want him to troll or you don't believe he's a troll.

I think there's a fundamental intellectual dishonesty in BOTH claiming someone is a troll AND eagerly encouraging that person by giving him lots and lots and lots and lots of attention.

    I agree.

Examining this a bit, a defense for people who consistently (a) believe he's a troll, and (b) "feed" him would be... frustration. Irrationality brought on by emotions.

Which is, of course, a defense that MIXUM could use as a legitimate poster against those who are convinced he's merely a troll.

But we HAVE improved. We already have 35 wins with 27 games left to play. Last year we only won 41 games all season.

    Learn the game, then post.

I just want to know what the clear definition of a troll is...

    Here's Wiki's definition...

"An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the intention of provoking other users into an emotional response[1] or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.[2]"

Honestly, Minstrel, you really think that me ignoring this fool is going to make him go away? And you don't think I have tried to ignore him? Hell yes I want to ignore him and make him go away. But the sad truth is that he doesn't go away and isn't going away because the people with the authority to do something about, choose not to do anything about him.

I am as vocal as I have been only because I don't see a resolution in either of your scenarios. If ignoring the fool doesn't make him go away, what else can you do? And you can see that I'm not the only one that fews this way - perhaps just one of the more vocal ones. If someone is known to be a pest and nothing is done about it, what else is there to say?

I like Mixum a lot. There are a lot of holes in his point of view, in my opinion, but it's still a point of view. I don't see why reading his posts upsets many of you. If you don't agree what he says, it's totally harmless. And if you do agree with him, well it's time to face that, in my opinion. But like I said, there are a lot of holes in his posts. He says we aren't improving when in fact, we have absolutely improved this season, being only a game out of 3rd place in the entire conference in late February. Still, it's fun to read what he thinks. I think a lot of it is him joking around. I mean, the clouds in his avatar and everything? He's just having fun. And if we do beat Houston tonight and we do make the playoffs, well then he was wrong and isn't that fun?

I agree that it is unwise to encourage the thing that is bothering you. However, our responses or lack thereof to MIXUM do not define whether we think he is a troll or not. Besides, its obvious that no one cares if we think he's a troll or not.

If he's a troll, he'd go away if everyone began to ignore him. That's virtually by definition. A troll is an insincere poster who's only around to draw reactions. No reactions, no troll. If he is a troll, you ensure his staying put by reacting constantly.

What if he were sincere? I'm not saying he is or isn't, but a problem I have with your position is you completely remove the possibility that he's simply a very negative and emotional fan. Regardless of what the odds are on that being the case, what is your test for that? If he were a true poster who sincerely held such negative beliefs, how would you know it?

I don't believe in banning a poster based on an opinion. Posters I have supported banning verifiably broke rules over and over. I don't particularly care for MIXUM's posts, since I don't think he lends much to analysis or discussion (always being negative or always being positive is exactly identical to analysis by dart-throwing), but I have little problem scanning and scrolling past his posts. I have to scan them, as a moderator, to be sure there's no TOS violation. You don't even need to do that.

Most of the time I feel like you do. Sometimes, like when Oden hurt his knee before the A.S. break, I couldn't even visit the site for a while because I didn't want to read the "sky is falling" posts. But usually, I don't let him get to me.

Either way, he is annoying to a large % of the people on this board. At one point do you do something about it for the good of the board, regardless of if in fact he is actually breaking the rules or not? And if he's not breaking the rules, at one point do we need to look at the rules and question them?

I vote "never". I will leave before I let an online community I'm a part of become a popularity contest.

Of course, that's just me. I am not the ultimate decision-maker for this site.

It doesn't define whether he is, no. Nobody knows whether he is. Some people believe he is. That's not good enough to cause a ban, IMO. Otherwise, this could swiftly become a mob-rule situation, where any poster who holds unpopular views gets kicked out. That's not very much in the spirit of a discussion forum.

Not when it comes to bans, I guess. I'm sorry if that offends you, but I think a ban is a pretty serious action and should be based on more than "I hate that guy, he's probably a troll."

I guess I vote "I'm not sure". On one hand I'm not a fan of censorship or banning people, but on the other I do know that I will leave if too many MIXUMs show up.

Therein lies the problem, Eric. I assume that MOST of us are here for the same reason: we want to find a place to discuss a common interest. No one wants to be a part of a group where everyone is in total agreeance and says the same thing over and over everyday; that would get old really fast. It's the different points of views that make this, and any other forum, worthwhile. That's your normal fan - you have good days and you have bad. Sometimes you speak well of the team and sometimes they piss you off.

When you throw out your opinion, others will either agree with you, "attack" it for being wrong/inaccurate or they could care less. If someone points out a flaw in your reasoning, you address it and move on. When someone is here solely for the purpose of irritating people and never has one positive thing to say about the subject, it gets old pretty quick. You can be negative all you want if it's genuine. That would also mean that you give the team, the organization and its fans some credit when credit is due. Mixum does none of that. He degrades the team every chance he gets and even degrades them when they don't deserve it. And when people point of the flaws in his logic, he chooses not to address it because it is NOT his intention to have an intelligent discussion. He only wants to instigate and once he's done so for that thread, he'll go and start another senseless thread and do it all over again.

I wouldn't ride his ass if he 1) mixed in a "normal" (i.e. not 110% negative) thread once in a blue moon and 2) at least attempt to address his always negative crap when people call him out on it.

    Exactly. repped.

I didn't say it doesn't define whether he is a troll. I said it doesn't define if we think he is a troll.

For people who constantly respond, I think it does. No one who's familiar with the Internet consistently encourages people that they believe are trolls (unless the troll amuses them and they want that person to stick around).

There's no way he turned it down. Vince Carter can help in the short term and his last year he can be bought out for only $4 million so a team looking for relief could have gotten it for acquiring Carter from us. It'd be like RLEC again in a few years. Not to mention the NJ picks. So I doubt it was there, or they thought Carter would really be a toxic presence.

What are the chances of getting EVERYONE that is annoyed by him to ignore him? And hence, what are the chances then of him going away? At some point, the mods have to take action. He's been banned before from other forums - I wasn't around but if I'd have to guess, it was for "Mixum being Mixum". I don't have mod authorities so I can't jettison the fool - yet ignoring doesn't work either so I'm only left with what I have: my say.

As I said elsewhere, I have ZERO problems with a sincere poster whether positive or negative. We ALL are entitled to our down days and we all can rip on the team from time to time. It's call being a fan, I guess. A newcomer to the forum might read a handful of Mixum's threads and say: "Shit, this guy's having a really bad week; hopefully his outlook changes over time." But week after week, month after month (and despite any progress made by the team or anything positive achieved by the team), there is nothing but more negativity, it becomes pretty evident what his intent is and that he is NOT sincere. NO ONE can honestly be genuinely negative about EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME. When the team does something well, acknowledge it. He simply can't and won't. That's why I know he's not sincere.

IF you can honestly assess the situation and look at his history and tell me that you HONESTLY feel that he's being entirely sincere, I'll be flabbergasted and have nothing else to say and forever drop the subject.
