That's the thing. They're not protesting the school. They're protesting racism. And they have an inalienable right to protest.
To quote @Natebishop3, "Racists use "build a wall" as part of their agenda to keep out Mexicans. The phrase is closely tied to racism towards illegal immigrants and towards Mexicans in general. Doesn't make it racist, but simply by common usage it (becomes) associated with that cause."
Basically, you can't blame people for considering it racist when many people do use it in a racist way.
Again, you are misunderstanding freedom of speech. The federal government can't pass a law, or throw these people in jail for protesting, but the school can absolutely punish the students for walking out in the middle of class. They are breaking the rules. Regardless, you aren't addressing the fact that it's a stupid method and a stupid reason to protest.
So use of the phrase doesn't make one a racist person, but use of the phrase is a racist act, because some racist people use the phrase? That's the fine line that has been drawn here?
I'm not misunderstanding one thing. It is their inalienable right to protest. I never said that the school couldn't discipline them.
You're looking at this logically.... stop. There is nothing logical about society. If you use the word niggardly, are you saying something racist? No. If you use it in public will someone think you're being racist? Yes. It doesn't matter what your intention was, or whether the word is in fact harmless, all that matters is how society perceives the use of that word. Our language is constantly evolving, and while saying "build a wall" a few years ago wouldn't have drawn even the slightest attention, today it is seen as an attack on Mexicans and Mexican-Americans.
So why are you bringing it up? Nobody said it wasn't their right. I said it was a stupid method. I said it makes no sense to protest the school when the school had nothing to do with it. I said the school should punish them for interrupting class. Why are you citing the bill of rights when they have no bearing on this conversation?
I handle a lot of situations with my son by using Judge Judy tactics. I don't want to hear anything that you have to say except for the answers to my questions. And if it doesn't make sense it's not true. Though there's always an exception to the last rule.
Listen - it's this simple. If you make a sign that's pretty clearly aimed towards Mexicans or Mexican-Americans, and then you put that sign in an area where you know people of that group will see it, then you are obviously using it as a way to hurt/upset/anger people. You can call it whatever you want, but he wasn't hanging that banner to start a dialogue. He wasn't being constructive. He was doing it to troll people. I guess this kid is learning that the real world isn't like the internet. If you say something inflammatory, it will come back to bite you in the ass.
No one is trying to prosecute them, but they're protesting something a student said, that was not even endorsed by the school, but was in fact punished. Also, while they are squawking around with their freedom of speech, why don't they want others to have the same? Don't claim your right to free speech if you don't give it to others.
Why the fuck are Mexicans "inflammed" by the suggestion of building a wall to keep out illegal immigrants? Perhaps they are pro-illegal immigration, but they can't bear the idea that others may not be? They can go fuck themselves. Shove their protest signs up their asses.
Silly notion. Just like racism is protected speech, so is criticism of racism. Regardless of what happened to the student that did it, these kids have a right to protest what was said.
Sorry Sly, I do notice you have pain over this issue. I did not intend to cause you more, but I did intend for you notice how many time you do post about this, and I fear your pain will not stop until you let it go. Then it can heal. You can not correct the view of everyone that might use the word Spic anymore than the one eyed man can improve the imagery of the blind. He died in the attempt you know. Heck, many people experience difficulties in this country when they don't speak quite like the All American. When I began school, I spoke far too much Gaelic for the liking of my teachers, hell they corrected me on how to pronounce my name every time I said it. I would ask my people how to say it, then stubbornly say it again in school. You are not the first to hear shit over the way you or your parents speak, but screw it man, let it go. You owe no one and it sounds like your father paid his dues in full. Feel no pain, you are all legal, so is mine, dad paid the full price. We all need to insist that all new comers also do the Ellis Island of their day. The rule of law needs to be kept for the benefit of all citizens.
Again, I think it's the right idea but the wrong method. Walking out of class is a way of protesting the school. If you want to show solidarity, do so after school on your own time. Would you protest outside a Fred Meyer because you heard one of the shoppers say something racist while you were buying bagels?
