The point is if guys have lost velocity or are fatigued what would you like the pitching coach to do?
Regarding Kuroda, it's more than his last 3-4 starts... in his last 10 starts, yes, 10, he went a combined 1-7 with 2 no decisions with an ERA of 5.40... not to mention the 6 starts in June where he had an ERA of 3.92... he had ONE great month... one... 5 starts in July with an ERA of 0.55
My point exactly. If it was just his last 3-4 starts I may agree on the exhaustion but it was a lot more then that.
Can someone ANYONE tell me what the EXACT job is of a pitching coach is? I mean besides walking out to the mound 2-3 times a game & collecting a fat pay check. Or the job of a hitting coach. I'll wait......
But to go against your point... Rothchild wouldn't have helped or hurt... Kuroda finished the season with a very good ERA at 3.31 with 19 of his 32 starts being quality starts... so Rothchild didn't hurt the team...
...^^^yup, and last year Kuroda did essentially the same thing and appeared to fade at the end of the year.
Kuroda isn't a young guy. As for CC he has a ton of innings on him and was coming off surgery. If he comes back and has a solid 2014 what are we going to do? Praise the pitching coach?
I would give credit to ANY hitting coach or pitching coach that helps a slumping good player. Or who can give improvement to a strugling young player. Did this REALLY need explaining? And I'll wait for the explanation from anyone on what the exact functions of a hitting or pitching coach are. Could it be what I just explained above?
The assumption that both the hitting and pitching coaches not foing anything simply because you don't see an immediate improvement is short sighted. How do you know what goes on behind closed doors. How do you knoe that million dollar pridefull players think they know it all and don't listen. Are you at the cages with player and coach? Speaking as a coach.....I work my ass off trying different techniques to teach my players how to block. If a player decides he knows best what am I to do? Does the oline coach get credit when 4 of his 5 linemen make great blocks or does he look like a schelp because the 5th lineman blew his assignment (something they worked on all week at practice) and the resultjng failure lead to a strip sack forced fumble resulting in a touchdown. the dimished mind of a soon to be 40 year old
It appears that NO ONE can give me the exact job discription of a pitching or hitting coach so I'll just gracefully bow out of this conversation by responding to you Al. Now of course I know that every team is going to have a hand full of prima-donna's that are not going to listen to a coach. Grandy will probably never be more selective at the plate & continue to strike out 170+ times a year. Teixeira will never lay down a bunt to the 3rd base side avoiding the shift & continue swinging for the fences every AB. And Gardner may never learn how to read pitchers better & go earlier in the count. But (& I say this from my personal observation), I saw absolutely NO improvement from hitters or pitchers who were slumping this year. So no Al, I'm not looking for IMMEDIATE improvement from these slumping players but over a course of time during the season I'd like to see SOME. On that note...goodnight all.
...that's about the 3rd time you said you were giving up on this conversation but you refuse to let it go. ...do you really need someone to explain what pitching and hitting coaches are for? Would it help if one of the greatest minds in Baseball simplifies it for you? http://www.tampabay.com/sports/base...k-shelton-target-of-fans-frustrations/1241081 ...now please, just let it go.
the team had a collective batting average of .242 which ranked 24th.... The year before they had a collective batting average of .265 which was ranked 8th in MLB... They fell 16 places... AS A TEAM... I think the comment about it being short sighted is null and void as that is for the entire season... pitching, I didn't have an issue with, but the hitting was horrendous...
Really...your going to compare team batting averages when the same roster wasn't in play. the dimished mind of a soon to be 40 year old
There's enough blame to go around for a teams poor hitting from the coaches to the front office but this year most of it had to do with just having to many Marv Thornberrys on the team.
