Triple A
The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees won a close scoring game over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs by a score of 2-1. Starting for the Yankees was the biggest let down of our season Ian Kennedy and he pitched a good game giving up 1 earned run on 6 hits in 5 innings of work for the win. His era is 2.10 but what good is this strong outing if he can’t pitch in the majors? J.B. Cox pitched a scoreless 6th inning and Phil Coke pitched 1.2 scoreless innings giving up 1 hit. Scott Strickland pitched 1.1 scoreless innings for his 10th save. Strickland almost gave up a home run by a matters of inches when there were two outs in the 9th inning. The hitting stars of the game for Scranton worth mentioning were center fielder Brett Gardner who went 3 for 4 with 1 run scored and second baseman Chris Basak went 1 for 2 with 1 rbi. I don’t see how being down in Scranton is going to help Gardner any more. I feel he needs to be called up for good.

He also had 7 strikeouts. His era is 1.19. Replacing Quintana to start the 6th inning was Juan Heredia and he gave up 1 earned run on 3 hits in 3 innings. Following Heredia to start the 9th inning was Justo Arias and he got credit for pitching 3 perfect innings but he let in Heredia’s base runner and that’s why he got a blown save. He threw a wild pitch. Alan Atacho came in for Arias to start the 12th inning and pitched 2.2 scoreless innings. Alejandro Martinez then replaced Atacho and pitched 2.1 scoreless innings giving up 1 hit for the win.

The hitting star of the game for the DSL Yankees2 worth mentioning was third baseman Juan Rijo who went 2 for 6 with 1 rbi. He drove in pinch runner Julio Rojas for the winning score on a sacrifice fly.

Triple A
The Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees lost to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs by a score of 5-4. I was listening to this game live online and if I’m not mistaken, this was the first time that Scranton lost after leading in the 8th inning. They were the only team that hasn’t lost yet after leading after the 8th inning but that ended tonight. Starting for Scranton was Kei Igawa and he gave up 3 earned runs on 7 hits in 6.2 innings for the no decision. That’s only an ok game. If he’s pitching, “ok” games in the minors, you know Igawa will get rocked again if he’s called up to the majors. Following Igawa was Steven Jackson and he pitched 1.1 scoreless innings giving up 1 hit. Mark Melancon pitched the 9th inning and lost the game by giving up 2 earned runs on 2 hits. Melancon will be ok. He worked his way up from Tampa all the way to Scranton this year.

The hitting stars of the game for Scranton worth mentioning were left-fielder Jason Lane, right-fielder Ben Broussard, and second baseman Chris Basak. Lane went 1 for 3 with 1 run scored and 1 rbi along with a home run. Broussard went 3 for 4 with 1 run scored and 1 rbi and Basak went 2 for 4 with 1 run scored and 1 rbi. I don’t know what Lane plans to do. He’ll be 32 and it seems that the Yankees want to go younger so I don’t see him ever getting called up again. To make matters worse, he’s batting .233. Unless another team shows interest, I see retirement in his near future.

[*] Scranton/WB Recap - Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees official[*]Scranton/WB Box Score - Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees official
Double A
The Trenton Thunder destroyed the Reading Phillies and won by a score of 9-2. Starting for the Thunder was Jason Jones and he pitched a great game pitching 6 scoreless innings giving up 4 hits for the win. He’s 12 and 5 and has a 2.89 era. It seems to me that he needs to pitch for Scranton again. Following Jones to start the 7th inning was Jhonny Nunez and he gave up 2 earned runs on 2 hits in 2 innings. Jose Valdez pitched a scoreless 8th inning giving up 1 hit and his era is 1.06.

The hitting stars of the game for Trenton worth mentioning were DH P.J. Pilittere, first baseman Cody Ehlers and right-fielder Edwar Gonzalez. Pilittere went 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored and 2 rbi’s along with a home run. Ehlers went 1 for 5 with 1 run scored and 2 rbi’s along with a home run and Gonzalez went 3 for 5 with 2 rbi’s and 5, count em, 5 rbi’s along with 2 home runs. That’s a nice game.

[*] Trenton Thunder Recap - Trenton Thunder Official[*]Trenton Thunder Box Score - Trenton Thunder Official
A Adv.

Game 1
The Tampa Yankees won a low scoring game over the Clearwater Threshers in the first game of their double header by a score of 1-0. Starting for Tampa was Christian Garcia and he pitched 5 scoreless innings giving up 2 hits along with 7 strikeouts. Even though he only pitched 5 innings, it was a nice outing by Garcia. Replacing Garcia to start the 6th inning was Michael Dunn and he pitched 1.1 scoreless innings. Following Dunn was Josh Schmidt and he pitched the final 2 outs of the game and was perfect for his 12th save. His era is 2.84. The hitting star of the game for Tampa worth mentioning was DH Hideki Matsui who went 1 for 3 with 1 run scored and 1 rbi along with a home run. You’d think Matsui would destroy A pitching but he did hit a home run.

[*] Tampa Yankees Recap - Tampa Yankees Official[*]Tampa Box Score - Tampa Yankees Official
Game 2
The Tampa Yankees won easily over the Clearwater Threshers by a score of 9-1 in the second game of their double header. Starting for Tampa was Wilkins De La Rosa and he pitched a great game giving up 1 earned run on 5 hits along with 8 strikeouts in 6 innings of work for the win. His era is 1.59. This was his second strong start for Tampa. I see Trenton on the horizon. Philip Bartleski pitched a perfect 7th inning and his era is 1.05. The hitting stars of the game for Trenton worth mentioning were short stop Eduardo Nunez, first baseman Josh Kreuzer and third baseman Mitch Hilligoss. Nunez went 2 for 4 with 1 run scored and 2 rbi’s. Kreuzer went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 1 rbi and Hilligoss went 2 for 3 with 1 rbi. Hideki Matsui DH’d again and did nothing in this game. He went 0 for 2 with a walk. It doesn’t matter because he’ll be called up.

[*] Tampa Yankees Recap - Tampa Yankees Official[*]Tampa Box Score - Tampa Yankees Official
Class A
The Charleston RiverDogs beat the Lakewood BlueClaws by a score of 7-5. Starting for the RiverDogs was Lance Pendleton and he gave up 4 earned runs on 9 hits in 5 innings of work for the no decision. After that, 4 pitchers came in the game to pitch an inning a piece. Craig Heyer pitched a perfect 6th inning for his 5th win and his era is 2.07. Stephen Artz pitched a scoreless 7th inning giving up 2 hits. Chace Vacek pitched a perfect 8th inning and Jonathan Ortiz gave up 1 earned run on 2 hits in the 9th inning for his 30th save. His era is 2.09. I don’t know what the Yankees plan to do with Ortiz. He’s been pretty great at Charleston. He’s 22 years old. I’m surprised he hasn’t been promoted yet. He was even a SAL Mid-Season All-Star.
