The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs by a score of 12-9 in 10 innings. Scranton scored 7 runs in the top of the 10th and batted around sending 12 men to the plate. Starting for Scranton was Chase Wright and he gave up 3 runs on 3 hits in 6 innings of work for the no decision but 2 runs were unearned because of a fielding error by second baseman Bernie Castro. Mark Melancon pitched a perfect 7th inning. Phil Coke pitched .2 of the 8th inning and gave up an unearned run because of a fielding error by third baseman Eric Duncan. Scott Patterson pitched the last out of the 8th inning with a strikeout. Scott Strickland pitched the 9th inning and gave up 1 earned run on 1 hit for the blown save and the win. J.B. Cox pitched the 10 inning and gave up 4 runs on 4 hits in .2 of an inning but 2 runs were unearned because of fielding error by second baseman Bernie Castro. The game would of been over if Castro didn’t boot the ball. Steven Jackson made 1 pitch for the out and for his 3rd save to end the game.
The hitting stars of the game for Scranton worth mentioning were second baseman Bernie Castro, center fielder Matt Carson, DH Shelley Duncan and third baseman Eric Duncan. Castro went 2 for 5 with 3 runs scored. Carson went 2 for 6 with 1 run scored and 2 rbi’s along with a home run. Shelley Duncan went 3 for 6 with 2 runs scored and 6 rbi’s along with 2 home runs and Eric Duncan went 1 for 5 with 1 run scored and with 3 rbi’s along with a home run. Shelley Duncan seems to have blown his chance with the pro club. He’s 28 going on 29 in September and he’s batting .226. I feel his baseball career will be coming to an end soon.

The Tampa Yankees lost big to the Clearwater Threshers by a score of 8-1. Starting for Tampa was Ivan Nova and he gave up 4 earned runs on 7 hits in 4 innings of work for the loss. Replacing Nova to start the 5th inning was Jesse Hoover and he pitched 2 scoreless innings. His era is 2.25. The hitting star of the game for Tampa worth mentioning was center fielder Seth Fortenberry who went 1 for 4 with 1 run scored and 1 rbi because of a home run. Hideki Matsui went 1 for 3 with a walk. DSL Yankees1 Seriously, I’m not going to sit up all night and drive myself crazy waiting for the DSL scores to go up. They play at 10:30 AM and they don’t post the scores until 4 in the morning the next day or some times not at all. They could forget it. Good night!

    Triple A

At the start of the year when Hughes was struggling, I thought that maybe he should concentrate more on his pitching than worrying about his blog. Now I feel it would be a perfect time for him to blog. It would show the struggles he is going through and how he is coping. I have a feeling that he stopped blogging because he feels embarrassed by his performances this year. The Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees won a high scoring game over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs by a score of 9-6. Starting for Scranton was Phil Hughes and he did not pitch well giving up 5 earned runs on 8 hits in 3.2 innings of work for the no decision. Replacing Hughes was Zachary Kroenke and he pitched 3 scoreless innings giving up 1 hit for the win. Not bad for a Trenton guy. Following Kroenke was Scott Patterson and he gave up 1 earned run on 1 hit in 2.1 innings for his 5th save.
The hitting stars of the game for Scranton worth mentioning were center fielder Melky Cabrera, first baseman Juan Miranda and short stop Nick Green. Melky Cabrera went 1 for 1 with 2 runs scored and 4 walks. Wow. Maybe there’s only so much you can do for Melky because he mastered triple A. It’s only 1 game however. Miranda went 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored and 3 rbi’s along with a home run. I see a call up in his future. Green went 1 for 5 with 1 run scored and 2 rbi’s along with a home run.

    Double A

The Trenton Thunder won a high scoring game over the Reading Phillies by a score of 11-7. Starting for the Thunder was Carl Pavano and he pitched well giving up 1 earned run on 6 hits in 6 innings of work for the win. I still don’t want him anywhere near the pro club. Replacing Pavano to start the 7th inning was Wilkins Arias and he gave up 2 earned runs on 1 hit in 2 innings. Kevin Whelan pitched the 9th inning and gave up 4 earned runs on 2 hits.
The hitting stars of the game for Trenton worth mentioning were catcher Francisco Cervelli, left-fielder Colin Curtis and right-fielder Edwar Gonzalez. Cervelli went 2 for 3 with 1 run scored and 1 rbi. Curtis went 2 for 5 with 1 run scored and 4 rbi’s along with a home run and Gonzalez went 2 for 5 with 2 run scored and 3 rbi’s along with 2 home runs.

The Tampa Yankees won a close scoring game over the Lakeland Flying Tigers by a score of 4-3. Starting for Tampa was Alan Horne and he gave up 3 earned runs on 6 hits in 3 innings of work for the no decison. Horne is not having a good year. Replacing Horne to start the 4rth inning was Edgar Soto and he pitched 2 scoreless innings giving up 1 hit for the win. Following Soto to start the 6th inning was Zach McAllister and he pitched 4 scoreless innings giving up 1 hit for the win. His era is 1.94.
The hitting stars of the game for Tampa worth mentioning were first baseman Kevin Smith who went 2 for 4 with 1 run scored and DH Josh Kreuzer who went 2 for 5 with 1 rbi.

    Class A

The Charleston RiverDogs won a high scoring game over the Lakewood BlueClaws by a score of 9-5. Starting for the Charleston RiverDogs was Ryan Zink and he pitched 4 scoreless innings giving up 2 hits for the no decision. Replacing Zink to start the 5th inning was Stephen Artz and he gave up 1 earned run on 4 hits in 4 innings for the win. Angel Reyes then started the 9th inning but gave up 4 earned runs on 6 hits in .1 of an inning. This Reyes better get his act together. He got rocked his last time out too. Jonathan Ortiz faced two batters in the 9th, got them both out and got his 31st save. His era is 2.06.
The hitting stars of the game for the RiverDogs worth mentioning were right-fielder Austin Krum who went 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 4 rbi’s and center fielder Abraham Almonte who went 1 for 4 with 2 rbi’s. Krum had a very good series against Lakewood.

    Class A Short-Season

The Staten Island Yankees won a low scoring game over the Vermont Lake Monsters by a score of 2-1. Starting for Staten Island was David Phelps and he gave up 1 run on 5 hits in 4.2 innings of work for the no decision but the run was unearned because of a fielding error by shortstop Addison Maruszak. Replacing Phelps was Nick Asselin and he pitched 1.1 perfect innings. Following Asselin to start the 7th inning was Brad Rulon and he pitched 2 scoreless innings. Pat Venditte pitched a perfect 9th inning for his 16th save and has an era of 1.05. This man is unstoppable. The hitting star of the game for Staten Island worth mentioning was DH Brian Baisley who went 1 for 2 with 2 walks.

The Trenton Thunder romped on the Reading Phillies and won by a score of 8-2. Starting for Tampa was Victor Zambrano and he pitched 5 scoreless innings giving up 4 hits for the win. Not bad. Replacing Zambrano to start the 6th inning was Jhonny Nunez and he gave up 1 earned run on 2 hits in 2 innings. Following Nunez was Jose Valdez and he gave up 1 earned run on 1 hit in 2 innings.

The hitting stars of the game for Trenton worth mentioning were DH Austin Jackson, third baseman Chris Malec and right-fielder Edwar Gonzalez. Jackson went 1 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 2 rbi’s. Jackson is looking like the prospect we want him to be. Malec went 3 for 5 with 2 rbi’s and Gonzalez went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 1 rbi along with a home run.

The Charleston RiverDogs got pounced on and lost by a score of 9-1 to the Lakewood BlueClaws. Starting for the RiverDogs was Adam Olbrychowski and he gave up 4 runs on 5 hits in 5 innings of work for the loss but 1 run was unearned because of a fielding error by second baseman Prilys Cuello. Replacing Olbrychowski to start the 6th inning was Gabe Medina and he gave up 5 runs on 6 hits in 2 innings of work. Olbrychowski and Cuello both have high era’s so the RiverDogs getting blown out should of came to no surprise. Angel Reyes pitched a scoreless 8th inning giving up 1 hit.

The hitting stars of the game for the RiverDogs worth mentioning were right-fielder Austin Krum who went 1 for 4 with 1 rbi and left-fielder David Williams who went 2 for 4 with 1 run scored.

Replacing Aceves to start the 7th inning was Mark Melancon and he pitched 2 scoreless innings. Steven Jackson pitched a perfect 9th inning striking out 2. The Trenton Thunder won over the Harrisburg Senators by a score of 6-4. Starting for Trenton was George Kontos and he gave up 1 earned run on 3 hits in 6 innings of work for the win. What amazes me is that Kontos is 5-11 with a 3.68 era. You’d think that he’d have a winning record with an era like that. Replacing Kontos to start the 7th inning was Anthony Claggett and he pitched 2 scoreless innings giving up 3 hits. His era is 2.15. Kevin Whelan pitched the 9th inning and gave up 3 earned runs on 2 hits. The hitting stars of the game for the Thunder worth mentioning were center fielder Austin Jackson(We have our eye on you Focker! I mean, Jackson!), left-fielder Colin Curtis and DH Edwar Gonzalez. Replacing Garcia to start the 8th inning was Alejandro Martinez and he pitched two perfect innings for his first save.

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees lost to the Rochester Red Wings by a score of 7-2. Starting for Scranton was Ian Kennedy and he gave up 4 earned runs on 7 hits in 5 innings of work for the loss. He also had 9 strikeouts. Ian Kennedy is supposed to be a star at the major league level and you’d think he’d dominate at triple A. What kind of outing is this? 4 earned runs? 7 hits? Not only can he not prove himself at the pro level but he’s showing he can’t even be a factor in the minor leagues. Replacing Kennedy to start the 6th inning was Scott Patterson and he pitched 1.1 scoreless innings giving up 1 hit. Following Patterson was Phil Coke and he pitched 1.2 scoreless innings. Scott Strickland pitched the 9th inning and gave up 3 runs on 3 hits but 2 runs were unearned because of a fielding error by second baseman Bernie Castro.

The hitting stars of the game for Scranton worth mentioning were left-fielder Justin Christian, center fielder Melky Cabrera and right fielder Shelley Duncan. Christian went 2 for 5 with 1 run scored and was caught stealing. Cabrera went 2 for 4 with 1 run scored and Duncan went 2 for 4 with 1 rbi. Shelley Duncan will probably remain a career minor leaguer.

The Trenton Thunder won over the Harrisburg Senators by a score of 6-1. Starting for the Thunder was pitching sensation Eric Hacker and he gave up 1 earned run on 3 hits in 6 innings of work for the win. I wonder why no one ever talks about Hacker. He had a great start at Tampa and is doing very well for Trenton. Wilkins Arias pitched a scoreless 7th inning and Oneli Perez followed Arias and pitched 2 perfect innings striking out 5 batters. The hitting stars of the game for Trenton worth mentioning were short stop Reegie Corona, left-fielder Colin Curtis, DH P.J. Pilittere and third baseman Kevin Russo. Corona went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 1 rbi. Curtis went 2 for 4 with 1 run scored. Replacing Castillo was Craig Heyer and he gave up 1 run on 2 hits in 2.2 innings for the blown save and the win but the run was unearned because of a fielding error by shortstop Carmen Angelini. All I know is that I’ve been doing these recaps all year and I don’t remember posting so many errors by one player. Jonathan Ortiz pitched a perfect 9th inning for his 32nd save.

The hitting stars of the game for the RiverDogs worth mentioning were DH Jesus Montero, catcher Austin Romine and first baseman Brandon Laird. Montero went 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored and 4 rbi’s along with a home run. His batting average is .321. Romine went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 3 rbi’s along with 2 home runs and Laird went 1 for 2 with 1 run scored and 3 rbi’s along with a home run. He walked twice.

The GCL Yankees lost to the GCL Tigers by a score of 9-3 in the first game of their double header. Starting for the GCL Yankees was Brett Marshall and he pitched a scoreless first inning before giving way to Richard Martinez who pitched 1 inning giving up 1 run on 2 hits for the loss but the run was unearned because of a fielding error by third baseman Roy Gomez. That’s not fair that he got the loss especially since the run was scored on an error. Replacing Martinez to start the 3rd inning was Michael O’Brien and he gave up 5 earned runs on 9 hits in 3.2 innings. Following Martinez was Clint Preisendorfer and he gave up 3 earned runs on 2 hits in 1.1 innings. The Scranton/Wilkes-Yankees held on and won a close scoring game over the Rochester Red Wings by a score of 8-7. Starting for Scranton was Kei Igawa and he gave up 4 earned runs on 8 hits in 5 innings of work along with 8 strikeouts for the win. Igawa does that a lot. He’ll give up a lot of runs and strike out a lot of batters. He’s not good enough for the pro team. Maybe they should try him in the bullpen. Replacing Igawa to start the 6th inning was Steven Jackson and he gave up 1 earned run on 3 hits in 1.1 innings. Mark Melancon pitch 1 inning and gave up 2 earned runs on 1 hit. Phil Coke came in the 8th inning and got one out giving up 1 hit. Scott Strickland pitched to one batter in the 8th, got him out and then pitched the 9th inning for his 11th save. He pitched 1.1 perfect innings.

The hitting stars of the game for Scranton worth mentioning were left-fielder Justin Christian, center fielder Melky Cabrera and first baseman Juan Miranda. Christian went 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored and 2 rbi’s along with a home run. He’s batting .313. Call him back up! Now! Cabrera went 2 for 3 with 1 run scored and 2 rbi’s. Melky obviously doesn’t belong in triple A. He’s toying with the pitching down there. It must be a terrible feeling playing all year in center field in Yankee Stadium to find yourself playing center field for Scranton in August. Juan Miranda went 2 for 4 with 2 runs score and 3 rbi’s along with 2, count em, 2 home runs.

He’s 13-5 and has a 2.79 era. Jose Valdez pitched the 9th inning and gave up 2 earned runs on 2 hits. The hitting stars of the game for Trenton worth mentioning were short stop Reegie Corona, second baseman Kevin Russo and DH P.J. Pilittere. Corona went 2 for 3 with 1 run scored. Well, Phil Hughes can always have a career in blogging. The Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees won a high scoring game over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs by a score of 13-12. Starting for Scranton was star blogger Phil Hughes and he gave up 8 earned runs on 10 hits in 3.1 innings of work for the no decision. Call the Twins back and tell them that we’ll do that trade now. Replacing Hughes was Zachary Kroenke and he gave up 2 earned runs on 3 hits in 3.2 innings. Following Kroenke to start the 8th inning was Scott Patterson and he gave up 2 earned runs on 2 hits in 2 innings for the win.

Christian went 4 for 6 with 1 run scored and 1 rbi. Duncan went 3 for 4 with 1 run scored and 3 rbi’s and Green went 2 for 5 with 1 run scored and 2 rbi’s. This is what happens when you put Christian down at triple A, a place he doesn’t belong. He gets 4 hits.
*Note* Melky Cabrera went 1 for 6 and struck out twice. Every position player had a great hitting game except him.

After feasting on star blogger Phil Hughes yesterday, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs were held scoreless as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees beat them 4-0. Starting for Scranton was Chase Wright and he pitched 7 scoreless innings giving up 5 hits for the win. He has a ridiculous 2.05 era. This is the worst team Wright pitched against but he did what he was supposed to do. Phil Coke pitched a perfect 8th inning and Scott Strickland pitched a perfect 9th inning for his 12th save. I’m wondering why that’s a save when he came in the game with a 4 run lead.

The hitting stars of the game for Scranton worth mentioning were DH Shelley Duncan who went 1 for 3 with 1 run scored and 1 rbi and right-fielder Matt Carson who went 2 for 4 with 1 rbi.

I expected more out of Betances especially after his 12 strikeout performance in his last outing. Replacing Betances to start the 6th inning was Chace Vacek and he gave up 3 earned runs on 3 hits in 2 innings for the blown save and the loss.
