We seem very intent on getting a back up point guard via the draft which is not the worst idea but also clearly indicates we have no plans to resign Napier (which is wise, even if he only gets $4M or so a year) and probably don’t think Baldwin can play regular minutes (might have something to do with his doubtful shooting). It might also be because it seems like in our range there will be lots of guards who project to be decent NBA players and not that many wings that could be said the same about. Maybe Huerter, Diop or Hutchison drop but if not then taking a guard might be the best choice.
I think this is a bad idea. Drafting for backups who have no future if they keep Lillard and CJ seems like a wasted pick. You can grab backup point guards from the G league. Draft someone who might actually address a need. You need to draft with the hopes that he turns out to be a contributor, maybe you get lucky and pick a Donovan Mitchell star in the making. Why pick someone who if all goes well has addressed your backup PG needs? Just keep Napier
Well I don’t disagree. When you consider where Philadelphia and Toronto found their back up point guard, both of whom have been very good, it does seem a bit pointless to waste a pick on that but we have invited so many guards to workouts that it really does seem to be the plan. I want a shooting guard or a small forward, or someone who can play both (well most of those who can play one of them can play the other these days).
Lmao. That's a huge difference. Why was it being reported that he had a 7ft wingspan before? That's still big enough to play SG. He could be our Allen Crabbe but with more ball skills and (possibly) better defense.
Shamet doesn't have the handle or overall skill level of a Curry though. More of a jump shooter too with a flatter arc. Will need some time to adjust to NBA line.
Not sure. Reach (8'4") and wiry frame is def more combo guard though. Crabbe was also taller, longer and a better statistical defender in college. Shamet has his strengths, just not sure a slight o-oriented guard is what we need.
Shamet can put on muscle, I think he's big enough to play the 2. His shooting is legit and his playmaking would be helpful. I think he could be the best 3rd guard we've ever had behind Lillard and McCollum.
I don’t know how good Shamet can be, but they way the dude moves around reminds me of Steph Curry... he is a great shooter that will slip in he draft because he is not the best athlete... I think he would be a great pickup
Big enough, sure. But he'll always be undersized for the position and I just don't think a Blazer team with Dame and CJ on it has room for another small guard who provides little D potential, especially in the playoffs.
Over 6'5 with a 6'7 wingspan isn't a small guard. I think you underrate Shamets defense. He's a very smart defender and pretty quick laterally. Reminds me of the way Klay Thompson was looked at defensively coming out of WSU, when he wasn't considered a good defender by any stretch.
He's Jordan Clarkson sized and that guy gets trucked in the playoffs. His size and strength is never going to be a reason you play Landry and likely a liability. And regardless of what people thought about Klay's defense, he at least had above average size for a SG (6'7.5", 6'9" wingspan, 8'7.5" stand reach, 205lbs) plus averaged 1.9 stls, 1 blk and a 3.2 DBPM his junior year. I might be underrating Shamet's D, but in terms of physical and statistical profile, it's not even a comparison.
I knew you would bring up size to discredit the IQ and underrated lateral quicknes. Common theme. There's a reason I don't like discussing prospects with you... You try to discredit someone's point with something completely unrelated
Noted. All I was trying to do is illustrate why using Klay as a reason to be optimistic about Landry's D projection is suspect at best and that regardless of what you may think about his lat. quicks or IQ, his lacking tools otherwise will hold him back from being a positive defender imo. There's is literally no player that I can remember with his height, length and weight plus statistical profile that has went on to be even a decent defender in NBA.
Alex Kennedy: The Portland Trail Blazers are working out free agents Rodney Stuckey, John Jenkins, Xavier Silas, Marcus Thornton (LSU) and Jarrod Uthoff among others in a mini camp this week. Last week, they worked out KJ McDaniels, Casper Ware, Kadeem Jack, Isaiah Cousins and Kyle Randall. – via Twitter AlexKennedyNBA So, Stuckey is not coming to a mini training camp, but just to a workout camp.
That makes sense, but did we used to have workouts for these guys; didn't Olshey just pick them? And I don't remember him ever playing longtime veterans on the summer league team....
