He's been a blocking WR at UCLA, which is what WRs typically do in Kelly's offense. With 4 guys having left for various reasons and only 1 guy in the 2022 class, Oregon is down in numbers in their WR room and adding a capable plug and play vet is a welcomed addition. btw, the Oregon rivals site insiders relay that they like the Ducks chances with stud LT Josh Conerly. He's scheduled to visit the beginning of March. STOMP
he's a WR with one year of eligibility left he's 6'4-ish and in the 210-220 lb range he's not a real long-ball threat but he can get down the field. His career yds/catch is 13.2. His value for the Ducks is with his size, frame, and speed he can be a possession receiver. A 3rd down threat and chain-mover
https://www.espn.com/college-footba...le-oregon-football-future-why-dan-lanning-won ESPN goes in-depth on the Lanning hire I'm skeptical about some of the things in the article, especially about Wilcox, but overall it's an interesting read
Clueless for not offering Justin the job without strings attached despite admin's concerns or for even considering him? My read of the tea leaves is that those in charge didn't want him because of their concerns about his lack of recruiting success/focus but had to pursue him publicly to appease an in house faction. While they "offered" him the job, it was done in a manner that he'd reject so that they could check that box and then pursue someone more aligned with their vision for the program. I've also read that Justin had angered/burnt bridges with Oregon's most important supporter with his actions/public words following previous interviews at Oregon. STOMP
Clueless because they didn’t want to hire the guy you wanted? I agree with their decision to make sure Wilcox would hire assistants that can recruit. College football today is all about recruiting. Way more about Jimmies and Joe’s than X’s and O’s. The SEC doesn’t dominate college football because the coaches are master tacticians. It’s because the rosters are loaded with 5 star recruits with superior speed and strength.
So we get a repeat of Cristobal: stay until he gets the job he really wants and trash the program on the way out. Recruiting means squat when the kids you recruit never put on the uniform. Everyone praised Cristobal's recruiting, but he left the cupboard barer than he found it!
So they hired a coach who only stays until a job opens up in the south? The program needs a quality coach - but they also need some stability. Will you still agree with the hire if it turns into another Taggert situation? Wilcox might not have been a great coach and he might not have stayed if he was - but at least there was the possibility of him being both. Can you honestly say the same about Lanning?
No he didn’t leave it barer. There’s 5 star recruits still on that roster. When he found it a lot of the recruits were guys he recruited when he was an assistant. Cristobal was incessant on running a bland/vanilla offense and was a lackluster game manager. Unless you’re Alabama, college football coaching is a carousel every year. If you don’t win a team can hop on the carousel just as quick. The days in college sports of coaches staying at a program for 20-30 years is gone.
We'll just have to agree to disagree. Between the kids who de-committed and the current players transfering I don't see a team with any chance to make a splash in the next 2-3 seasons. Also, a coach doesn't have to stay 20 years. He just has to stay long enough to build a foundation that won't crumble the minute he leaves. I'd bet you a beer Lanning is here, at most, just long enough to put 1 good team on the field. Then he will take off as fast as if his head was on fire and his ass was catching!
I've been told by somebody who should know that the Ducks made a fairly toxic offer to Wilcox, deliberately, knowing he was very unlikely to accept. I've also been told that even before the offer, Wilcox had plenty of reservations about the Oregon job because of the expectations surrounding the program. It's a pressure cooker compared to the low-expectations at Cal
Of course not. But Taggart's disgraceful quick exit taught Mullins to build in huge buyouts into his HC's contract which he did with Cristobal's & now Lanning's deals. Miami paid UO 10M for Mario which seems to have been pumped into the contracts of an all-star group of young assistant coaches. Post Willie, Mario helped put the Duck program back together, showed what was possible here with recruiting & stayed 4 years before his Alma Mater came calling with an offer he couldn't refuse... I can honestly say I don't think there is any concern at all about William Jewel College (Lanning's alma mater) doing the same. Were (relatively speaking) Rich Brooks & Mike Bellotti great coaches at Oregon? Did each stay long enough for you in Eugene despite having zero ties to the area prior to coaching there? Raising 3 young boys in Eugene while making millions just might hold some appeal for Lanning too. And again, I've read that Uncle Phil didn't want Justin & supported the Lanning hire. Clueless would be pissing that guy off. STOMP
You are way off on your own in this assessment. Oregon should compete for the Pac 12 North title in 2022 as I expect they're the prognosticator's and & press's favorites going into the season. If they get decent QB play and don't suffer an inordinate amount of injuries to key personnel, they could easily run away with the conference championship. Unlike say USC, quality players are found throughout their roster including both lines. STOMP
Justin has a good thing going at Cal and he's probably comfortable and like living in the bay area. Not as much pressure than the Oregon job either.
In 2021 Cal had a losing season both in conference and overall. In 5 seasons at Cal, his in-conference record is 15-25. Anyone want to bet a beer that starting today Lanning lasts longer at Oregon then Wilcox does at Cal? I live in the Bay Area and know some people & they are not impressed... STOMP
