by far, the widest variance, by position, between a generic recruit's rating and his performance in college is at QB. There are just too many variables with QB's especially on the mental side of the game. A QB can have significant physical tools, but if he can't substantially increase his recognition and processing speed, he's not going to be effective. I've been told that's the big problem Ty Thompson has

    Semi-serious question.

How do you maintain your fandom when everyone involved in the sport - from coaches to media to the people who rate prospects - are spewing a constant stream of bull dada?

As a fan I want to believe - to have hope. OTOH, I have reached the conclusion that hype is for losers. The more public praise a coach or player draws, the less I believe in them. The ones who are actually good at their job are almost invisible because they don't need to brag about it. (I will refrain from the obvious comparison to politics!)

As the meme says "change my mind."

Yes Thompson was projected by the recruiting sites to be more then an adequate/average QB, but so were Nix and Butters. Then again, there are 32 starting QB gigs in the NFL, 2 of which are manned by former Ducks who weren't elite prospects. Hell, Tom Brady didn't start his Senior year at Michigan and was a 6th round pick. While the recruiting sites are proven more right then wrong, their projections are really just educated best guesses and projecting QBs is especially difficult... even for NFL GMs

TT has obvious elite tools (size, athleticism, big arm) that stand out, but as guys go up levels of competition, succeeding at QB is more and more about whats between the ears. Fwiw, posters on the rivals site who claim to be program insiders relay that Thompson currently sits #3 on the depth chart.

If Thompson's read and progression speed is that bad, then the Ducks blew it on him. Nix has terrible field vision. Play Thompson and see if he figures it out, cause Nix ain't taking the Ducks anywhere but .500 at best.

Nix is better than Anthony Brown and Brown took the Ducks to 10-4, and that was with the team realizing that Cristobal was leaving and essentially gave up on the season

Oregon got curb-stomped by Georgia; no argument. But there is a lot of over-reaction to one game; and way too much blame is being directed at Nix.

that's already done after Dante Moore committed (assuming the commitment holds). Several recruiting sites rate him as the #1 or #2 QB in the nation. And the QB who gets the nod on some sites is Arch Manning, and a lot of people feel he should not be rated that high, and wouldn't be if not for his name and family

His line gave him time against Georgia, and he rarely surveyed the field. His arm strength is suspect too. Not a lot of zoom on his throws. He may very well look great against EWU. EWU is a good program, but not at the Ducks level. But the Ducks success relies on him being good against the likes of Georgia & Utah, Washington & Stanford. I see the Beaver's moving up. Being a top QB is about throwing your receivers open, and hitting them in tight spaces. Not just when their college open. I don't see Nix being that guy. I think it's sad Thompson can't even sniff the field. I'd rather see what Thompson can do , even if he fails, then see what an ordinary Nix does.

Just watched the Dante Moore commitment video. Awesome. Blessings for a bright, and hopefully, meteoric future at Oregon.

2nd time you've made this question/comment... December 21 is early signing day when most football prospects sign.

Google could be your friend if you just need to find a date but if following the ups and downs of recruiting is too much drama for you, why not spare the rest of us who enjoy it?

I agree. I like Mario, but he was so vanilla with one of the greatest talents at QB(Herbert), the Ducks have ever had. Instead of utilizing his Manning-esqe surveying skills in the pocket, he had him running stupid RPO"s.

Dante Moore better live up to this hype. And contract…

Can’t afford to have another Thompson.

Oh and the Ducks better start recruiting O lineman. Not too many big time recruits coming up the pipelines.

I'm a little surprised Thompson hasn't entered the transfer portal. Is he being promised something?

Maybe he realizes that he’s not that good? Loyalty to a program can’t be the reason right?

Maybe he just doesn't have that "Eye of the Tiger". That can't be understated. Desire is everything.
