Color me surprised. I thought for sure he would exercise the option and rehab on the Warriors dime. What do you think of this move? https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/27059902/durant-declines-315m-player-option
He is still getting a minimum of 31.5 million to rehab next year, but by declining this next year he now get a longer contract with more money and more opt out clauses. Either way he is getting paid. But now someone will be on the hook for more than just next year.
Exactly! This is no surprise. He is getting a max anywhere he wants to go (Warriors, Knicks, or Nets), so it would make the least sense for him to pick up this option. All these guys declining their player option obviously have a long term deal in the works that is better financially/provides security. The players know the offers already! That's what their agents have been doing all season.
if you make $60,000 a year, it would take you 525 years to make the 31.5M Durant just opted out of Turner made nearly 52M for his three years in Portland. At 60K a year, it would take you over 850 years to make what Turner did as a Blazer in either event, if you saved your sick leave, you'd have a lot of it
Despite superior features, it won't be able to compete with the Very High Salary he'll be offered elsewhere.
