Science Elon Musk's SpaceX just launched the most powerful rocket on Earth today

That's what was on TV when flipped it on today! Was wondering why some Cash Test Dummy was heading into outer space.

 

So fucking cool. I love that there is a "Don't Panic" plaque on the dashboard.

 

The idea presented in this poster is very funny. But the idea of having nothing better to to with this mega blaster than to put a Tesla in Space is mind numbing. Did they really do this? When does the payback begin? Or is payback just too old school? Does this guy really have enough, he doesn't give a shit?

 

It was a test run. During test runs, NASA will usually use concrete or steel to simulate a pay load. He figured, why not use something a little more fun and eye catching than concrete. His goal is to colonize mars.

 

I once knew a fella, Robert F Johnson. Had an office in my territory, but when I called on his office, on Sw 6th Ave in Portland, he usually wanted to talk about other stuff, like sailing. As a hard work fella, it sort of troubled me, but I pressed on with my work. Then I found I had been or I should say my boss had been made aware that I should cover the Georgia Pacific building and that account. Ha! that happened like magic.

Then this same fella was often in the GP building. Danged if he didn't still want to talk about sailing. Lucky for me that the office manager there informed me, uh that is the owner (dip shit!). So not being real slow, I prepped abit for the next chance meeting.

Never happened though, I got recalled to service, Virginia and Puerto Rico and .... and then well time moves on.
You know some of these people have more money than you can count and they do odd shit with it.
R.F Johnson owned a yacht, the winner of most ocean races of the day including setting the TransPac record.
But nothing like this! Shooting a Tesla into space for chuckles?

Oh yeah. The yacht was named the Ticonderoga. Sometimes called Big Ti.

 

I am aware of the goal.

 

Those booster rockets reentering and landing back on earth at the exact same time were way cool....reuseable rockets...the guy is a genius...he wants to orbit some performance art...he's earned it. Not like our planet's been clear of debris anyway

Ha! yeah well, he wants to hire someone to design him the equivalent of a sea going log truck to go get those bugger spread over the ocean.
Ain't got that part done yet, and the slow bugger hasn't given me a call yet. Even sent him my number too.

I suppose this fellow is the visionary of this day. Damn hard to relate to man that would just jack a Tesla into space with no, I mean zero payback on the table.
Step back 60 year, he here is the visionary of the time.



Tom Watson Jr.
He had the balls to barrow 5 billion dollars, an unheard of amount of money in that time
to build a line of Computers. Sure he had a few of those, but to build a class of scalable machines was beyond reason!
At a cost that was beyond known boundaries in that day. Risk above the acceptable of the day. But the man had a pay back in view!
It came through, 30 years of market dominance.

Is a trip to Mars in this class? Is there a payback in view?


BTW This man had a neat Sail boat, named the Palawan. Named after the Island he served on in WWII. When he retired he attempted to sail around
Greenland. I don't think he made it but he gave it a go. I was privileged (shit, I hate to use that word but it was) to crew once on this vessel back in the early 70s. An elegant boat for sure.

 

The only payback for the Tesla will come from the millions of people who watched a Tesla go into space. Is that the world's most expensive brand advertisement ever? Almost definitely. However, when people see future Tesla products, and imagine if they put out something cheaper and more usable for the average consumer, people will trust and respect the product because of of what he was able to do.

From a non pure business idea of payback, long term, he can make big bucks from government contracts to launch satellites, supplies, telescopes, etc. However, he gets to spend money on space exploration and be a part of new discovery, exploration, and advancement of our species. We all have different priorities, but he obviously feels pretty strongly about it being a positive.
