    • Apparently it's not just a home thing, and not just a hitting thing.

The Cardinals invested heavily in what might have been a positive change in direction Friday only to suffer a 5-4, 12-inning loss that turned on a curious pitch selection, a missed sign and ultimately an unmade play.

The San Francisco Giants raised their World Series championship banner before their home opener at AT&T Park, then almost 4½ hours later won when substitute left fielder Aaron Rowand drilled a bases-loaded, two-out single off the left-center field wall.

In between, the Cardinals wrote another frustrating page within a rough early-season script.

"There was a lot in that game. It had its high moments and its low moments," manager Tony La Russa said. "It was a tough ballgame. It would have been a great one for us to win."
