ESPN crew has trouble reaching St. Louis

    The show will go on, ESPN says, despite difficulties many of its personnel experienced in making their way to St. Louis for the Cardinals' first national telecast of the season.

    The tornado that hit Lambert-St. Louis International Airport on Friday night and led to it being closed most of Saturday caused ESPN staffers to scramble to get to town for coverage of Sunday's 7:05 p.m. Cards-Reds contest.

    ESPN spokesman Nate Smeltz said many production people flew to Chicago and bussed to St. Louis and that most of the network's on air-personnel flew to cities in the Midwest then rented cars to drive to town.

    Play-by-play broadcaster Dan Shulman, who called an NBA playoff game Friday night in Atlanta, flew to Evansville, Ind., on Saturday before renting a car for the approximate 21/2-hour drive up Interstate 64.
