While I don't disagree that classism is the main driver of injustice, it's not productive to steer conversations of racism towards classism. Racism is one of the many ways classism is expressed. It is no less real than any other struggle.
Lol yeah, Milo is anything but progressive. Breitbart / GG / alt-right are pretty well known for their tokenisms, so Milo fits the bill.
And since you are so fashionably uninvolved and cooly uninterested, you had no idea Breitbart is an alt-right shill rag? I'm one of those people that argues their point on the Internet. Welcome, friend, to the Internet. Have an iced tea. Calling Breitbart racist isn't edgy, it's basic analysis. I'm not calling you racist. I have no idea who you are. This, though, is poetry. Please keep posting.
The thing that really bothers me about pro athletes making statements about issues like this is that they do so without reading and researching facts on both sides... What's even worse is having Obama comment on a shooting without out facts and vilifying the police force. It's disgusting... Obama is the one magnifying racial tensions and empowering negative attitudes towards the police that protect the American people...
Thank you to everyone who shot down that weak ass pie chart so I don't have to. Regarding Clippy's straw man, black/black crime - that's not the issue, but is a symptom of the issue. The issue at hand is institutional racism that began centuries ago and wasn't wiped out with integration or the election of our first black president. It's an issue that is still very prevalent today. It begins in early childhood and lasts a lifetime - too often a very short lifetime. What you see as black/black crime is just crime. People tend to live around people who are like them - just a fact of life. So, black people tend to live near other black people. Crime is generally committed inside communities, not outside of them - so black/black crime is just crime within the community, no different than 90% of all the other crime that takes place. We don't call out Bernie Madoff, David Koresh, or Jeff Gillooly for white/white crime. But yeah, let's create this boogieman of black/black crime and deflect attention away from the actual problem onto a symptom of the problem - that is the American way.
I've long thought that - among other requirements - it should be a requirement that police officers live within the community they police. If you're working in the NE precinct, you better live in NE and not Beaverton. It's one very small, simple step that would go a long way towards restoring police credibility.
I call it out because the whole black lives matter movement is hypocrisy. How can you call for justice when you ignore the black lives lost every week at the hands of other black lives? How do you ignore the violence within the black community? It's there and you can't tell me it's not. You're just one of those people that don't wanna face the facts. You would rather sit on one end and just blame whitey for black peoples issues today. Dame made it. He came from Oakland. So many other blacks have done good for themselves.
And like I said, yes racial profiling happens. Yes racism is still around. The point is, it's so over dramatic. shit isn't even close to the 60's. I think we have made it pretty damn far. But yeah if you keep bringing the black race in as a whole and trying to pull the victim card then there is a major problem. Same goes for the white race. People need to stop focusing on color so damn much, it's a joke. Content of character. Come on now. Common sense.
I think Breitbart is shit too, but I know all of you guys are going to go read something on Salon or Huffington Post with no shred of irony.
Foreal. I didn't even know breitbart was right because like I said earlier I have no affiliation with right or left. I just googled it. Either way it's not like that article is making up statistics, it's sourced. ignore statistics though because logic
Just because some people have succeeded doesn't mean that the majority of the black population isn't being oppressed. Yes, kudos to Dame for being the exception! He's an exceptional young man. But to expect everyone to overcome oppression is asking the impossible - especially when the only examples of those who "escaped" are pro athletes and musicians...two professions that aren't realistic for the vast majority of people. Nobody is ignoring black/black crime - least of all the BLM movement. Black leaders have asked for education funding - rather than prison funding - for decades, in order to address this issue early on in a child's life. But there's no political will to invest in the futures of children when it's so much more profitable to incarcerate them. You conveniently ignored the fact that black/black crime is just simply crime. It shouldn't be surprising that when a people are oppressed, and don't have an avenue to success, that they turn to destructive behavior. That isn't something that only black people do - that's human nature. That's why poor Russians with no hope for social mobility are willing to shoot a drug into their blood stream that literally rots the flesh off their bones. It's why Palestinians who have had their land and homes taken from them and bulldozed feebly attack a US-armed Israel. Hopelessness is the problem, and unfortunately too much hopelessness is caused by oppression. BLM understands that oppression isn't something that will end swiftly. But ending death-by-police is something that should be achieved quickly (immediately!). Only after we stop handing down death sentences for being black while committing a petty crime (or no crime at all!) can we begin to tackle the larger problem of oppression.
Black Lives Matter is a reaction to how the police handle interactions with black folks. It's a problem. Notice how that's a different problem than black-on-black crime. Consider how those two problems would have different solutions. Just because you think an organization is focusing on the wrong problem doesn't make them hypocritical. "You're just one of those people" "blame whitey" "other blacks have done good for themselves" A+ quality posting You don't focus on race because you don't have to. Many other people are not so lucky.
im a 24 year old white male. I can't have opinions on anything. Love is life, life is love. I love everybody
In a couple posts in this I clearly talk about police and some injustice with some of those killings which were pretty public but this dude still chooses to focus on my opinion on black lives matter movement. Great job.
Mods, please move this thread to the Off Topic section where it belongs. It's a political topic that has nothing to do with Portland Trail Blazers basketball. Nobody is changing anyone's mind here. BNM
Dude, your age and race (and socioeconomic status) have everything to do with how you're viewing systemic racism in this country and the reaction to it. You feel its overdramatic. You think people focusing so much on race is a "joke." That's not because of your superior intellect. Its because your white skin gives you certain privileges in life and you can't relate. Racism doesn't effect you (or me) like it does other people; your (and my) voice in this matter is pretty irrelevant. It doesn't matter what I think: I'm not the one trying to act like an authority on black people's experiences. I'm simply echoing what they say is happening to them. The fact that you insist that black-on-black crime is being ignored tells me you aren't actually listening to what black people are talking about. Read blue9's last post again. In general, I'd suggest trying to listen to what other people are saying about their experiences instead of dismissing them as dramatic and hypocritical because you're annoyed. Look man, TRY not to take this personally. Your age, race, and Twitch channel don't represent you as a person. I'm sure you're a good kid. Look, I play Overwatch too. I'm a Lucio main, but I'm excited to try out Zenyatta now that he's buffed. See? We're friends now. Simply acknowledging racism exists is no longer enough for white people to skate by on. You're just pissed that black people are trying to do something about it in a way that irritates you, so you're shitting on BLM without doing your home work. It's kind of petty.
