Actually, the worst thing in the Warriors series was when we had Aminu (which I like) forced to make plays because Dame and CJ were trapped by the Warriors excellent defense. Turner being a 3rd proper play maker is actually very helpful in this specific issue.

There seems to be a pretty dramatic misunderstanding of the new salary cap effect by some posters on this board. $17.5m/year for a top-7 rotation guy simply isn't that outrageous when the cap is around $100m. It might feel, intuitively, like it's too much... but Olshey didn't become a bad GM overnight. He's using more than intuition.

If you like Turner as a player, then I don't think that his contract should be a negative here (although it's not a screaming deal like we got on Aminu last year).

Now... as to whether we should like Turner as a player, there are three key things to the modern NBA:
    1. Perimeter shooting
    2. Defense
    3. Ballhandling/distribution
Turner is fantastic at number 3. He is pretty good at number 2. And he's been poor at number 1... at least until he shot over 50% from beyond the arc the last two months of last year.

I think that he's going to be a good addition, but there is a question of what current Blazers, if any, we are going to let walk because of acquiring him. Right now I think feel good about this and am confident he will help make the Blazers good next year and in the future.

Could have spent a fraction of that contract on a back-up PG. We seemed to score just fine last season without an offensively-capable SF/PF/C.

We don't have to let anyone walk except for Kaman, Roberts, and Henderson. We'd still have $6.3M in cap space to sign another FA, plus the Room Exception (~$2.8M).

Hmm. That tells me that Aminu is now our starter at PF. I'm worried that means Harkless is gone.

I don't like this, though. We're paying him enough as it is: can't we say "now earn your starts"?

Maybe this means we're trading some of our pieces for a star.

Who am I kidding... We can't have nice things

Could have Rubio & Pek for nothing but cap space.
Has Jack received a contract yet?

Harkless is not a guard. He can't play run an offense if needed. They are two entirely different types of players. Harkeless can attack the basket, but can not pull up and hit a consistent jumper in the lane. And Harkless is not a good passer either.

He does play well around the basket though and can hit a 3 pt shot and can guard bigger players. But again different types of players IMO.

and lets see, Turner can pay 3 positions and guard those 3 as well with very good passing/ball handling skills

Aminu shot in the 20's from 3 as well before he got to Portland, then bumped it to mid 30's last year. Was that just an outlier, or is our offense good at getting guys wide open looks while defenses key on Dame/CJ? Turner has shown the ability to shoot in the 30's from deep and it won't surprise me at all if he bumps that number up by 8-10% next season.

Kevin Pelton on 1080 The Fan:

I had to check the tweet several times to make sure it wasn't a Woj fake account. I just don't see how Turner fits this team as a starter because he is best with the ball in his hands which means Dame and CJ wouldn't have it in theirs.

Parsons was a concern on the defensive side of the ball so Turner is better than him in that respect but he's not as good as Harkless.

As for Parsons, he has talked about the weather being a factor and although Portland isn't the NE in the winter, it's still not very sunny during the season. I think Portland will be the better team over the next 3-4 seasons than Memphis but sometimes teams look at what has happened in the more recent past.

Not that thrilled with Pau Gasol...like Biyombo better but they are not as good as Plumlee in the offensive game. There are more centers available than there is demand for so a team like Portland may be able to wait it out and get someone on the cheap. Biyombo fits more from an age standpoint but he is so one-dimensional and who knows what he will cost.

My read is that you wouldn't need both Crabbe and Harkless when you just spent so much money on Turner. Crabbe is more likely to get the bigger offer and in that case, maybe you let him go.

This is a disappointing signing for them IMO. He just needs the ball in his hands more than I think will be a fit with the Blazers.

Given that they won 44 games last year, I don't know that they improved a lot by adding Turner but with the development of their own players they should be better.
