    2014 FC Dallas Preview:
Will Oscar Pareja's return light the spark in Big D?

Please stay healthy: This could be the last dance for George John, who at one time looked like he had every bit as bright a future as the likes of Omar Gonzalez and Geoff Cameron. A series of injuries – everything from his feet to his head – has robbed him of some of his best years. If he can shake the bug, he's an All-Star back there. But it's a big "if," especially since he's missed most of preseason already.

    FC Dallas B Team?

FRISCO, Texas – Hunt Sports Group vice president Dan Hunt has spoken in the past of his admiration for FC Barcelona’s venerated youth system, and if recent reports are true, FC Dallas may soon be emulating one aspect of the La Liga giants' player development model with a “B” team playing as a full member of a lower-division league.

A recent report from the USL PRO blog RecklessChallenge.net speculates that FC Dallas could be one of at least two MLS clubs fielding a second team starting next season in the U.S. Soccer pyramid’s third tier.

FC Dallas officials declined to comment on the report when contacted by MLSsoccer.com, but the 20-odd game season played by USL PRO teams would certainly be in line with FCD’s vision for player development as recently articulated by Hunt.

Should FC Dallas be one of those teams, they have multiple local options to stage USL PRO league games with Toyota Stadium, the adjacent Toyota Soccer Center and the recently awarded contract to manage Soccer Park at Elm Fork in Northwest Dallas.

FC Dallas Suffers First Loss of the Season, 3-2, to Seattle

FC Dallas (4-1-1, 13 points) fell, 3-2, to Seattle Sounders FC (3-2-1, 10 points) in front of 17, 070 fans tonight at Toyota Stadium.
FC Dallas began the match on the offensive side of the ball, forcing Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei to make two saves and defend against four corner kicks in the opening six minutes of the match.

The pressure paid off in the 10th minute when Michel knocked a long pass forward to the feet of striker David Texeira. With his back to goal, the Uruguayan opted to chip the ball up into the air to turn defender Chad Marshall and chase after it. Texeira put a little too much on the ball and it looked as though Frei would gobble it up at the top of the box. Fortunately for Dallas, the ball took a unexpected bounce, spun backwards over Frei's head and was nodded home by Texeira.

Seattle made it a 1-1 game in the 22nd minute when U.S. National Team star and Nacogdoches, Texas, native Clint Dempsey blasted a 25-yard free kick off the bottom of the crossbar behind Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz. After hitting the bar, the shot angled down, beyond the goal line to give Dempsey his fourth goal in his last 112 minutes of play.

FC Dallas also closed the first 45 minutes with heavy pressure to earn a 59-41 edge in possession during the first half. The advantage earned FC Dallas a penalty kick in the 42nd minute when Seattle defender DeAndre Yedlin shoved Texeira to the ground inside the area. Michel stepped up and buried the spot kick, with a low shot to Frei's left side that ricocheted off the inside of the post before settling into the back of the net. The goal was Michel's third of the season and it gave FC Dallas a 2-1 advantage heading into halftime.

Dempsey gave Seattle the first strong scoring opportunity in the 59th minute, when he struck a half-volley high to the near post. The shot looked destined for the back of the net, but Seitz got up to punch the shot away, keeping Dallas' one-goal lead in tact.

Following a cross from Marco Pappa in the 76th minute, Dempsey collected a loose ball at the back post and fired a low shot into the six-yard box. The line drive shot took an unfortunate deflection off of center back Stephen Keel and deflected into the back of the net to make it 2-2.

Frei robbed Texeria of a second goal in the 83rd minute when the Uruguayan found himself in the right place at the right time. Texeira received the ball at the top right corner of the six-yard box and put a shot towards the upper 90, only to have Frei slap the chance down with his right hand before plucking the ball out of the air.

Dempsey netted his second goal of the game in the 85th minute to give Seattle a 3-2 lead. Following another buildup down the left flank from Pappa, Dempsey worked a one-two pass with Chad Barrett and roofed a shot from five yards out to hand FC Dallas its first loss of the 2014 campaign.

FRISCO, Texas – FC Dallas took advantage of some quality international competition to work a number of players back into match fitness, and despite a 2-0 loss to the English Premier League's Aston Villa, the fact a good number of players got quality time means the team can consider the game a success.

Dan Hunt reveals FC Dallas’ USL-Pro plans

Our path is to have an affiliate for 2015 and it’ll be somebody that is a very likeminded group, so we feel good in trusting our players to them. And then, our goal is to have our own team in 2016. We’re working out those details.

Having waited his turn, U-20 veteran Kellyn Acosta ready to lead United States at CONCACAF Championships
Acosta: "I lead by example because I know as the captain people are going to follow you."

FRISCO - As a 17-year-old in 2013, Kellyn Acosta made the United States U-20 FIFA World Cup roster, but did not play a minute in the tournament. Now his time has come as the United States looks to qualify for the 2015 edition.

On Monday, Acosta was named the captain of Tab Ramos’ U-20 United States World Cup team that will begin the CONCACAF U-20 Championships on Friday in Kingston, Jamaica against Guatemala.

“I’m really excited to go in and compete at the tournament,” said Acosta via phone on Monday morning. “I think I have a lot of experience coming from the last [U-20] World Cup that helped me lead the team and hopefully we can get the results that we need.”

With a U-17 World Cup, U-20 World Cup and more first team professional appearances than anyone else on the roster, Acosta is a natural fit for the captaincy and it’s a job he takes very seriously.

FC Dallas got a stoppage-time goal from its leading scorer in each of the past three seasons as Blas Perez redirected home a pass from Moises Hernandez in the third minute of extra time to ignite 15,236 opening-day fans with a 1-0 FC Dallas win tonight at Toyota Stadium.
The first chance of the match came in the 10th minute when San Jose's Chris Wondolowski picked off a pass and went straight to goal. The veteran goal scorer struck a hard shot, low to the far corner of the net but FC Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz was equal to the challenge and made a diving, two-fisted save to his right side to keep the score tied, 0-0.

FC Dallas came within inches of taking a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute. Victor Ulloa gained control of a loose ball just outside the area and tried his luck with a curling strike sent towards the far post. San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham saw the shot the whole way and was just able to get his left hand on the ball at full stretch, pushing the shot wide of the bar and out for FC Dallas' second corner kick of the match.

Dallas pressured again and was robbed of a lead by San Jose defender Paulo Renato in the 22nd minute. Fabian Castillo set up the chance after collecting the ball in the middle of the field and dribbling around two San Jose defenders. Castillo sent a cutting pass across the area to the back post, where Perez hit a first-touch shot back across the face of goal. Bingham was beat on the play but Renato recovered in time to make a goal-saving block on the goal line.

San Jose nearly took a one-goal lead just three minutes into the second half when Shaun Francis sent a cross in from the left flank. The ball skipped off a pair of players challenging for the ball and fell directly to the feet of Wondolowski, but the forward was unable to keep his shot under the bar.

FC Dallas replied in the 56th minute when Perez combined with Tesho Akindele to set up Mauro Diaz. The Argentine had a try from well outside the area, but his shot also rose above the crossbar and sailed out of play.

Ryan Hollingshead created an opportunity for 2014 MLS Rookie of the Year Tesho Akindele with a header in the 62nd minute. Hollingshead rose above his maker to deliver the ball into the space in front of Akindele, who was a few feet outside the top left corner of the six-yard box. Unfortunately for Dallas, Akindele's shot skipped inches wide of the far post.

Second-half substitute Michael Barrios, who made his first appearance for FC Dallas in the 75th minute, ignited the attack late. Once in the 82nd minute, and again in the 84th minute, Barrios received the ball on the right flank and sent a dangerous ball into the area. Akindele managed to get on the end of both passes, but a save from Bingham in the 84th kept the match level.

    Press release from FC Dallas

FC Dallas knocked in two second-half goals and maintained a clean sheet to pick up a 2-0 victory over Philadelphia at PPL Park today, improving to 3-0-0 on the year.
Mauro Diaz nearly put FC Dallas up a goal in the second minute of the match. Moises Hernandez released Fabian Castillo into space up the left flank and the Colombian took the ball to the end line before playing a pass back into the path of Diaz, who struck a first-time shot just wide of the back post.

The near miss awoke Philadelphia and the home side controlled possession for the next 18 minutes of the match. Twice the Union troubled FC Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz, who was making his first start at PPL Park since last playing for the Union on Sept. 4, 2010. Philadelphia's best chance came in the eighth minute when Sebastien Le Toux slipped a ball inside the box to Zach Pfeffer. The midfielder maneuvered around Zach Loyd, forcing Seitz off his line to cut down on Pfeffer's shooting angle. Pfeffer opted to slide the ball in front of the goal, rather than shoot and FC Dallas' Atiba Harris was in position to cut out the pass and keep the match scoreless.

The Philadelphia Union were forced to play the final 49 minutes of the match a man down when Pfeffer was shown a straight red in the 41st minute for a foul on Diaz.

Dallas was able to take advantage of the extra man power just four minutes into the second half when Diaz got a foot in defensively and knocked the ball back into Philadelphia's half. The 2014 MLS Rookie of the Year took advantage as Tesho Akindele took the ball off the foot of a Union defender and ran at goalkeeper Rais M'bolhi. Just as Akindele crossed into the area, the forward picked out the far corner of the goal and put FC Dallas up 1-0 in the 49th minute.

FC Dallas took a 2-0 lead in the 59th minute when Castillo received the ball on the left flank. The young midfielder faked a cut towards goal before delivering a pass to the top of the box for Ryan Hollingshead. The second-half substitute walked around a defender and notched the first goal of his professional career on a low shot towards the back post. Hollingshead placed his shot perfectly and the ball tapped the inside of the same bar Akindele had scored at 10 minutes earlier to give the visitors a two-goal advantage.

FC Dallas head coach Oscar Pareja

On the hot start to the season and Seattle next week...

We enjoyed a big three points today, but the team understands it's a journey. We're focusing on the next one. That's the way we operate here. Now we are going to start our preparation for the next match, which is not just important but against a very good team and at our home, so we keep going. This is the time that we need to keep looking at things one step at a time.

    Keys to next match...

For me, I see the team effort as a unit - I don't really single one out, I think it's everybody's effort that's taken us to this point so far. Everybody is doing a great job, our boys including the guys who come from the bench, they are doing a lot of stuff to help the team get points.

    FC Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz:

Overall thoughts on the game and season so far...

It's good. You know, we've had a hot start but at the same time we've been smart about it. We're finding places we need to continue to work on and we work on those throughout the week and continue to get better. It's super early in the season so we know that success is not easy and we are going to continue to push for it, and continue next week at home.

On keeping a clean sheet today...

They broke us on our left side early on once or twice. I'm not sure who it was, but he had a ball across and I got a little leg to it, but outside of that, everything defensively was really, really strong today. We limited them to terrible angles to shoot on me and made things really easy for me and look, our team came out and beat a good team today. Obviously being down a man is not easy but it's not easy to attack a team that just sits back as well. So for us we took our time and knew we were gonna get our chances in the second half and we made sure we finished them.

    FC Dallas forward Tesho Akindele

On today's goal and the team so far this season...

Yeah it was my first goal. I think that their left back - Fabinho - just held the ball a little too long so I got up on him, stole it from him, and then I had a one-on-one with the keeper and that was the end of it.

I think it's just all about confidence, right now our team is feeling confident. We feel like our defense is playing well - shutting people out - and we're finding goals everywhere, and on offense we're pretty confident.

On how the team can improve...

Right now, I think we just need to keep playing the way we are. I feel like we're doing well, we've obviously won three games so not really improving anywhere, just playing the way we are.

    Press realse from FC Dallas

FC Dallas 1, Sporting Kansas City 0

    And then there was one.

FC Dallas defeated Sporting Kansas City 1-0 Saturday night at Toyota Stadium in a showdown of what began as the last two undefeated teams. Left back Maynor Figueroa broke the deadlock with a header in the 77th minute, extending FCD's home undefeated streak to 11 games dating back to last season, and leaving Dallas as the only unbeaten team in MLS.
