I think the Blazers s actually have quality guards on the bench this year. So while I’m pretty scared that one injury could prettt much destroy our front line, I think we should give Olshey some credit for giving us plenty of options behind Dame and CJ. Trent JR, Curry, Baldwin are better back up guards than i think we’ve had in a while. If we get anything at all from Simons than great!
So here’s my giving NO some credit.

 

It wasn’t a bad trade at the time. Barton wasn’t todays Barton and Afflalo was a very solid player in his prime. It made sense.

 

Good GMs make some bad decisions. It happens. You can’t say he’s a terrible GM because of a Barton bad deal when with the exact same team he got Nurkic/1st for freaking Plumlee. The “great GMs” usually have some cushion for bad deals - they can make mistakes but they have Duncan or Curry or Dirk etc so they can recover. Also just to beat a dead horse so many deals do/don’t take place because of Paul allens approval or disapproval that it’s hard to fully be able to pinpoint what decisions you can blame Olshey for.

That’s a fair point(s), I feel like overall NO is just not good gm, but like all gm’s He’s done some good/ smart things and done some bad things.

 

If we win 50 plus games and make it to the second round will you then go on record and say he's a good/solid/decent GM?

 

Honestly you could probably talk me into calling him “solid” right now, I try to be fair about the moves he’s made.
It’s certainly not all bad...
When I ever hear him talk it usually pushes me towards the bad (he just seems so full of ‘it’) and like he’s got no idea what he’s doing imo.
Prolonged silence helps my opinion of him...

Anyways... You could probably talk me into solid if I had to grade him it would be like C / C- so... Not an F. He gets A for the turnaround after LMA left. Oh boy 2016 though just yikes...

 

AA was an OK player. He was not good enough to help teams win....it was more like trying not to loose. He's like Turner is now - a net negative, but hopefully less negative than the other options.

Barton & Robinson were in the same tier as AA. All were a net negative.

Pre-trade, with all the rumors going around - I was against giving up a pick for AA and would have never made it.

After the trade, I got caught up in the excitement and was hoping for the best.... that didn't last long, as AA showed he was not very good.

 

I agree with you. NO has had some good moves & some bad moves. Out of the 30 GMs, I'd rank him in the 14-18th best range. That's just jot good enough to get to championship contender level

 

Well AA, Mathews, Aldridge, even Rolo had injuries that year so I don’t think it’s all on AA.

 

Never said it was all AA fault. Just said he wasn't worth giving up the first for.

 

I was also against giving up a pick for Afflalo, however the pick was never supposed to be a 1st rounder. Olshey lottery protected the pick for the first two years after Aldridge's contract was up assuming we'd be a non-playoff team. Would this team really be better off with Malik Beasley (or similar player) on it?

Barton and T-Rob were giving this team nothing that season other than some garbage time highlights. Afflalo was averaging 14.5 points for Denver that year. You can't just dismiss Afflalo as a similar player to Barton and Robinson. If you want to argue that Afflalo wasn't a good fit for a Stotts offense then I could see that but it's a completely false narrative to call him a negative. The team was in the middle of winning their 5th game in a row, 4 of which were against West playoff teams, when Matthews went down. Then Afflalo himself got hurt which limited what he could do. He would have been absolutely fine on the second unit for the playoffs.

 

Neil's seat has got to be getting hotter by the day. We must heavily target Jimmy Butler at trade deadline. Please Paul, put your fucking foot down!

 

It probably wasn’t worth the 1st, but at the time it didn’t seem like a bad deal, it was a win now deal, Injuries dereailed that more than the deal itself.
