Because our outstanding GM has provided such an amazing roster that any wins we accumulate are based on talent alone.
Its pretty incredible that Stotts, coaching in the NBA since 1994, 25 years, alongside dozens of other coaches like George Karl and Rick Carlisle, surrounded by NBA players, scouts, management, almost daily for about 3 decades and following a playing career, doesn't know what "basic things are, like timeouts". This is ridiculous. Questioning coaching is fine, but migod, I wish people could spend a day or two with actual NBA coaches and listen to them talk and maybe they'd realize how much they know. As the saying goes, they have forgotten more basketball than most people will ever know. Is Stotts the next John Wooden? Nope. And maybe a fresh face is necessary. But its not about Terry Stotts not knowing how to coach, or how to use timeouts or whatever. Last night for example - that's a good road win. The Kings are better than they have been for years. Anyone in here credit Stotts for Anything, or just waiting to pounce on him if they would have lost? its illogical. You cannot give blame to someone and then not give that same person credit if things go well. They have the 10th best record in the NBA.
I swear winning blinds people. Every time this team goes on a little winning streak, you have a group of fans crapping all over anyone that dared to be critical, as if issues still don’t exist. I’d give specific examples, but they’ve been discussed ad nauseam. Save that energy for when this team actually evolves. Going on a winning streak isn’t evolution, especially not when it happens every season. Let’s see the team change the way they play. Let’s see in game adjustments. Let’s see Stotts hold CJ to the same standard he holds everyone else to. Let’s see them win a playoff game, nevermind advance. Then, maybe we can talk. Until then, same old, same old. Look at the forest, not the trees.
Winning streak? 2 games? Also said ad nauseam is that no one thinks he’s Greg popovich. But the constant blaming after every loss and most WINS of Stotts is stale. To think people know more or have some better insight as to coaching basketball vs an NBA - who is as widely respected as Stotts- is laughable. If they fire him and get someone better awesome.
I get calling out people who question his knowledge of timeouts or whatever, but to me it’s just hyperbole. I don’t think anyone actually believes he’s that stupid.
Damn, so it doesnt makes sense to ever criticize an NBA head coach and they are never to blame because they know more? Yikes. You ever think about how, most of the people in here who truly know basketball want Stotts gone? Obviously hes smart... he's a head coach. That doesnt make his deficiencies any less glaring, and I've listed them on numerous occasions. Rarely does a Stotts supporter discuss those basketball reasons, instead it's "His talent sucks" or "he knows more than you". That's weak.
Depends on the context. For an average person he most definitely isnt. For an NBA coach, I'd say he is. People like to dumb that down by switching the context.
Of course stotts knows more about basketball than fans. The issue isn’t that he’s stupid. The issue is that he’s stubborn. That’s actaully the issue with most coaches that end up getting fired. Take Pop for example. He’s not successful because he’s smarter than every other coach. He’s successful because he’s the most open minded. Just look at some of his assistant hires.
People can have opinions. Fine. It’s the overly simplistic solutions that fans have that is annoying. These guys spend 8 mo with these players obsessing Day and night about the team. They have experience. They have played and coached for years. There is an entire staff working long hours to win games. But HOLY SHIT HE DIDNT CALL A TIMEOUT. Fuck that. “See! Dave Joerger just called timeout!” Yeah. And Dave Joerger just blew a lead at home. So? Does he suck now? Or he’s great? And lost? What is it? If someone has an issue with their style of play or some significant decisions that are not game by game but real strategic or philosophical opinions fine. But even then, let’s hold everrreeyone accountable.
Kings fans think Joerger sucks, FWIW. They were pissed that he pulled Giles for WCS, and left him in there even though Nurk was having his way. They totally blame coaching for the loss.
A) Pop is the best ever imo so it’s tough to hold him as the barometer for coaches but ok B) the Spurs, because of Pop, have one of the most strict and non-negotiable basketball “climates” in the NBA. There is “the Spurs way”- an actual thing. You do it his way or you are gone. Kawhi didn’t like it. They do things that no other team does on a daily basis. Perhaps it’s his Air Force background. He is open minded on societal and social issues, which i love. But in basketball? No.
Man, if that ain't a Sesame Street bit! One of these things is not like the other, one of these things does not belong!
Disagree. Popovich builds personal relationships with almost all his players. Obviously not every player is going to be open to it, but that’s not on Pop. It’s what allows him to bench a Ginobili, or scream at a Parker, without the risk of losing them. Look how open minded he was with Aldridge as well. He took responsibility for his first season, and adjusted the offense accordingly.
Stotts is notoriously late at calling timeouts. What does Joerger blowing a lead have to do with Stotts not being able to consistently call timely timeouts?
Disagree. Yes, he is absolutely a stickler for executing the game plan. But he's consistently changed his game plan as the roster changed over the years. He also let Tony Parker play through his mistakes in order to better teach him how to do what he wanted him to do - whereas with Stotts a player can get benched for weeks for a single lapse (unless they're Dame, CJ, Aminu, or Turner).
