"I learned a long time ago losing a game is not even close to the same kind of disappointment of losing Freese," La Russa said. "That by far overshadows" everything. Reliever Scott Linebrink's up-and-in fastball in the sixth inning hit Freese above a finger, causing him to immediately recoil in pain. Assistant athletic trainer Barry Weinberg immediately rushed to Freese and recognized that Freese's hand was broken.
