Third baseman David Freese will be lost to the Cardinals for at least a month, and perhaps significantly longer, because of a broken bone he suffered in his left hand during the club's 6-5 loss Sunday to the Atlanta Braves.

"I learned a long time ago losing a game is not even close to the same kind of disappointment of losing Freese," La Russa said. "That by far overshadows" everything.

Reliever Scott Linebrink's up-and-in fastball in the sixth inning hit Freese above a finger, causing him to immediately recoil in pain. Assistant athletic trainer Barry Weinberg immediately rushed to Freese and recognized that Freese's hand was broken.

"It was crunchy a little bit," said La Russa, who also rushed to Freese from the third-base dugout.
