If Wilt was in his 20s, he'd still dominate today. Yeah, I know the game has changed, but it's still about putting the ball in the basket and stopping the other team from doing so. Wilt would be awesome in today's pick and roll, both offensively and defensively. He really was a once a century athlete. The dude was a 7'1" track star that also happened to play basketball. BNM
Wilt was much more athletic than Shaq. He was a champion high jumper and hurdler. Wilt strided over the hurdles. Shaq would run through them. BNM
I agree, which is why I think he'd be a more athletic defender. Comparing him to Shaq was in terms of the offensive dominance, not the specific style of play. In terms of style of play, today he might have developed into a David Robinson type player--another phenomenal athlete who was a fabulous and incredible defender and could both post up as well as face up.
I always wondered what Shaq would have done as an offensive lineman. I don't think he would have ever had the speed to play on Defense, but I bet he could have allowed QB's all day to sit in the pocket. Really, Shaq had all the tools and size to be the greatest ever... just never had the drive. He coasted through the NBA and has even said so in so many words. Too bad.
I I'm old enough to remember watching Wilt play. My dad was a big fan of Wilt's. My earliest memory of the NBA was the 1967-68 when Wilt said he was going to lead the league in assists and them when out and did it. I also remember watching him block Kareem's sky hook multiple times in one game. Wilt was 35 at the time, playing on two bad knees, well past his prime, but still had enough left in the tank to help the Lakers get past the much younger Kareem and win the championship in 1972. BNM
@PtldPlatypus Now THIS is revisionist history. Lol. C'mon @Orion Bailey... "coasted"....? Domination is just a bit more than coasting..
You think he needed the pros to do that? I had more than I could handle playing varsity basketball, let alone being Wilt the stilt.
