that was hilarious. if u werent an admirer of prof gates before hearing that line, u should be afterwards. nevertheless, prof gates doesnt represent the state, sgt. crowley does so he's expected to act accordingly and not capriciously as he did in this incident. and i happen to think that a man such as prof gates, who's committed himself to a fastidious life of scholarship would demonstrate a lot more restraint than a brute cop. btw, someone mentioned that i should repudiate my support for prof gates because the officer's telling his side of the story- well i would take his words as gospel if cops didnt have such a murky history of racism, corruption and flagrant abuses of power. conversely, do professors have such a murky history? no, they uplift young ppl of all races and socio-economic backgrounds. bravo to educators everywhere!!!

It just seems like a gross misunderstanding. I can see why Gates was pissed off and lashed out. For starters he's 58 years old. Most men his age are crotchety and do not like a younger person confronting them or bothering them. I'm sure he was already on edge after arriving home from a long trip and dealing with his door being jammed. Then a cop asks him what's going and to show ID which leads to an outburst from Gates.

Both individuals overreacted end of story. Both should apologize and get on with life.

So much for the racist neighbor. Here's the 911 audio tape, she called them "two gentlemen" repeatedly.

911 Tape Reveals Caller Did Not Bring Up Race Of Gates

Cambridge's police commissioner says the 911 caller who reported a possible break-in at the home of black Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. did not mention race during the call. The caller said they were calling on behalf of a concerned neighbor.

What's messed up is the abuse the neighbor (Whalen) took by people after the original article claimed she saw two black men breaking into a home.

well i think she was calling on behalf of an older women; we dont know what the older women saw or assumed. also, why was the 911 caller giggling throughout the entire call? i guess she thinks two men breaking into a home is comical.

    :check:

If my neighbors didn't recognize me and saw two people trying to break into my house and called the cops, I would do a few things:

First, I would thank the police for being so thorough. If it means I had to stand on my porch for a while for them to figure out that I was who I said and I actually resided there, so be it. Better that than letting someone ransack my house because they were afraid to be perceived as racist by confronting a black person.

Second, I would seek out that neighbor and bring them a bottle of wine with a thank you note.

Third, once the cops figured out I said who I was, I'd invite them in and offer them some coffee, soda, etc.

I recently moved to a new neighborhood. I tend to shop for groceries very late at night, because it's less crowded. I went out one night around midnight, driving our pickup truck (which we don't drive regularly and is a bit of a beater). We're going to put a new front door on our house and on the way back to the house from the grocery store I was driving slowly down a really nice street checking out the entryways of other homes. I noticed a car shadowing me a few blocks back. When I pulled in front of our house, I saw rollers flash on behind me. The officer asked me what I was doing because he ran my plates and saw I wasn't a local resident. I explained everything, gave him my license and registration. He asked me to open my front door with my key to prove that I lived there. I was happy to do so. In fact, I insisted on getting a piece of mail with my name and new address on it.

Cops are there to keep us safe. They are obligated to investigate anything out of the ordinary. My pickup doesn't fit the neighborhood. I was dressed in my crappy painting clothes. I was driving suspiciously. The plates were assigned to an address three miles from where I was. I understood why things looked out of place. Why give them shit when they're just trying to stop crime?

You mean the same Senator Kennedy who left a woman to drown after he had drunk-driven off a bridge? You mean the same Senator Kennedy who was convicted of plagiarism at Harvard? Yeah, that's some hero.
