Bullshit it’s about being properly developed. Hughes game is about speed. Defensively the Rangers were borderline retarded defending him. Watching the Devils they cherry pick almost all game. Teams will continue to take advantage of that as the season goes on.
Gallant showed his incompetent stupidity in this game. His team has no defensive system. The amount of moronic pinches by the Rangers leading to odd man rushes and scoring chances was pathetic. There was no reason for the defenseman to make so many high risk pinches. Against a speed team like the Devils they should play defensive and counter punch. Miller should have been benched weeks ago and told if he doesn't start hitting people he won't play. This rub out player shit for a 6'5 defenseman isn't cutting it.
I actually don't think it is determination or how they were developed. I think it is about speed. Hughes has an elite quality/skill, speed. Lafreniere doesn't have that. He is more well rounded in theory, bigger guy as well, but the speed of Hughes is elite, and that is a big edge for him to have an elite skill.
I agree Gallant has no diffensive structure in place. That’s why the team is inconsistent and allows a lot of chances and has had issues with speedy teams. Actually this devils system might be good for the regular season but not in the playoffs.
Hughes had 7 of the Debs 29 SOG, hardly an offensive barrage, once the Rangers picked up the hitting the Debs got flustered and went half the 2nd period without a SOG. First Debs goal was poor mechanics by Igor, 2nd goal Trouba was clearly hooked on the hands , 3rd goal Laf kitten pawed the 20 lb lighter Hughes and should have been given an assist on the play. I'm curious as to what part of the game you think GG has kept Alexi/Kappo from developing? Skating speed? Knowing when to shoot the puck? Using your size to shoulder an opponent off the puck or drive to the net? 3 years later they still need development after playing from the day one on the big team?
