"He battled today," Oakland manager Bob Geren said. "He's beena little bit under the weather the last few days. It lookedlike a little bit of a lack of energy due to that. But goodpitchers can pitch effectively even when they're not 100 percentand that's what he did today."

The 24-year-old righthander became the seventh pitcher in Oaklandhistory to win at least 10 straight games. It is the longeststreak since Mark Mulder - for whom he was traded for - won 11in a row from May 9 to July 8, 2004.

"There was a point there where I was dominating," Haren said."Right now it's not one of those times, but I'm still winningsome ballgames, which is really nice because when I hit astretch where I'm feeling good, hopefully I can out pitch theguy instead of out (hitting) them."

Despite pitching with a cold, Haren improved to 4-0 against theYankees.

Even though it was the first time Haren allowed more than fourruns this season, he improved to 34-4 when his teammates scoreat least four runs.

The righthander, who lasted five innings against the Yankees onApril 13 in Oakland, left after allowing consecutive one-outsingles to Andy Phillips and Melky Cabrera.

Before Haren was replaced by rookie Dallas Braden, the Yankeesshaved four runs off an 8-0 deficit but did so with littlecontributions from their big bats.

"Right now, we need a well-pitched ballgame and we need to hit,"New York manager Joe Torre said. "We need to do both things onthe same day a few day just to get us to the point where we canfeel good about ourselves."

Phillips tied a career high with three hits, had a pair of RBIsingles and scored on Derek Jeter's single, which made it 8-5.Jeter's base hit snapped an 0-for-10 skid but he was strandedwhen Braden struck out Robinson Cano, who represented thepotential tying run.

Rookie Santiago Casilla tossed two scoreless frames and AlanEmbree pitched the final frame for Oakland, which finished a 3-7road trip.

"It wasn't the best road trip but it was a great finish," Gerensaid. "Two out of three to the Yankees in New York, anybody Ithink would take that."

The Athletics struck early against Pettitte

After scoring an unearned run on Eric Chavez's RBI groundout,Oakland sent 10 men to the plate and had seven hits in thesecond. The Athletics opened the inning with four straightsingles and took a 6-0 lead when Cust crushed a 2-2 pitch overthe center-field fence for a three-run homer.

"You want to get to him obviously before he settles down," Custsaid. "He's been through it before and he's definitely let upruns early and pitched through it, so we kept on it and got himout of there early."

Oakland added two more when Johnson homered for the secondstraight day. He just missed the upper deck in right field, butit signaled the end of Pettitte's afternoon.

Pettitte (4-6) lasted just 1 2/3 innings and was rocked foreight runs and nine hits. It was his shortest outing since alsolasting 1 2/3 frames of an 8-7 loss at Wrigley Field on June 8,2003.

"It would have been nice to be able come back and maybe win,"Pettitte said. "But obviously, we weren't able to do that. Theone inning was way too much to overcome."

The veteran lefthander fell to 66-32 following a New York lossand allowed more than two runs for just the sixth time in 17starts.

"I think Andy was a bit frustrated by the bloops," Torre said."The balls hit out of the ballpark, he obviously missed hisspots."

Ron Villone provided 3 1/3 scoreless innings, but Oakland addeda run in the seventh as Cust doubled off lefthander Mike Myers. The Athletics extended their lead to 11-5 on Chavez's two-runsingle off Luis Vizcaino.

"It's frustrating," Jeter said. "You try to stay positive. Idon't like losing as much as we have. I don't think anyonelikes that."
