Blue Jays break through for first win in Baltimore

TORONTO 6, BALTIMORE 4
BALTIMORE (Ticker) -- The Toronto Blue Jays second trip thisseason to Oriole Park at Camden Yards is already going betterthan their first visit here.

Alex Rios had three hits, including a key RBI single in afour-run fifth inning, as the Blue Jays defeated the BaltimoreOrioles 6-4 to take the first of a three-game-series.

Jason Phillips hit a solo home run and Vernon Wells drove in arun for Toronto, which was swept in a three-game series herelast month.

With the game knotted 2-2 in the fifth, Baltimore starter DanielCabrera (3-5) loaded the bases after a leadoff walk to AaronHill, a single by Royce Clayton and a walk to Phillips.

Rios then delivered an RBI single to left that put the Blue Jayson top for good. Lyle Overbay followed by grounding into adouble play, though Clayton scored on the play. Phillips scoredmoments later on Wells' bloop-single to right.

In 103 career games against the Orioles, Wells is batting .294(119-for-405) with 23 home runs and 72 RBI.

Cabrera kept the inning going when he hit Glaus with a pitch. It looked like the Orioles were out of the inning when MattStairs grounded to first baseman Kevin Millar, but Cabrera, covering first base, dropped the throw from Millar and allowedWells to race home with the fourth run of the inning.

Cabrera allowed six runs - five earned - and seven hits in 4 2/3innings. The 6-9 righthander also allowed two walks, hit abatter and struck out two. A.J. Burnett (5-3) got his second winof the year against the Orioles, allowing four runs, six hitsand two walks while striking out eight in 6 2/3 innings.

Two relievers bridged the way to Jeremy Accardo who earned hisfourth save of the season. He has not allowed an earned run in20 consecutive innings.

In two prior starts against the Orioles this season, Burnett was1-0 and allowed just three earned runs in 16 innings for a 1.69ERA. In his last start on Wednesday, he pitched his firstcomplete game of the season in a 2-1 win against Baltimore.

Perhaps in response to Glaus being hit, Burnett threw a pitchbehind Jay Gibbons in the bottom of the frame, prompting homeplate umpire Mark Wegner to warn both benches.

The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the first inning courtesy ofGlaus, who has had the Orioles number this season.

Rios led off the game with a single and stole second base afterone out was recorded. Rios moved to third on a groundout byWells and scored when Glaus doubled to the left-center fieldgap.

Glaus has enjoyed facing Baltimore pitching this season as he isbatting .385 (5-for-13) with a homer and six RBI in four gamesagainst the Orioles. Though his playing time this season hasbeen limited due to an injured left heel, Glaus provided thegame-winning RBI in each game of the Blue Jays' three-gameseries sweep of the Orioles last week in Toronto.

Phillips gave the Blue Jays a 2-0 edge with a rare home run tolead off the third. It was the first home run of the season forthe Toronto catcher and his first longball since August 11,2005 when he was a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Orioles tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth, though adoubleplay disrupted a potentially big inning.

A double by Nick Markakis and walks to Miguel Tejada and RamonHernandez loaded the bases with no outs. Aubrey Huff followedwith an RBI single to center to plate the Orioles' first run.

With the bases still full, Melvin Mora grounded into adoubleplay that allowed Tejada to score the tying run. Burnettgot Millar to ground out to end the inning.

Brian Roberts hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning for theOrioles, who have lost four consecutive games to Toronto.

Blue Jays break through for first win in Baltimore

TORONTO 6, BALTIMORE 4
BALTIMORE (Ticker) -- The Toronto Blue Jays' second trip thisseason to Oriole Park at Camden Yards is already going betterthan their first visit here.

Alex Rios had three hits, including a key RBI single in afour-run fifth inning, as the Blue Jays defeated the BaltimoreOrioles, 6-4, to take the first of a three-game-series.

Jason Phillips hit a solo home run and Vernon Wells drove in arun for Toronto, which was swept in a three-game series herelast month.

"We had some good at-bats and key hits tonight," Toronto managerJohn Gibbons said.

With the game knotted at 2-2 in the fifth, Baltimore starterDaniel Cabrera (3-5) loaded the bases after a leadoff walk toAaron Hill, a single by Royce Clayton and a walk to Phillips.

Rios then delivered an RBI single to left that put the Blue Jayson top for good. Lyle Overbay followed by grounding into adouble play, though Clayton scored on the play. Phillips scoredmoments later on Wells' bloop single to right.

In 103 career games against the Orioles, Wells is batting .294(119-for-405) with 23 home runs and 72 RBI.

Cabrera kept the inning going when he hit Troy Glaus with apitch. It looked like the Orioles were out of the inning whenMatt Stairs grounded to first baseman Kevin Millar, but Cabrera, covering first base, dropped the throw from Millar and allowedWells to race home with the fourth run of the inning.

Cabrera allowed six runs - five earned - and seven hits in 4 2/3innings. The 6-7 righthander also allowed two walks, hit abatter and struck out two.

"He could have been a little rusty early on because it's likehis seventh day," Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo said. "He gaveup four runs and I thought he lost his composure a little bitand he wasn't able to do damage control for us."

A.J. Burnett (5-3) got his second win of the year against theOrioles, allowing four runs, six hits and two walks whilestriking out eight in 6 2/3 innings.

"I was a little off," Burnett said. "I started off good, but Igot erratic. Then the bullpen once again came on and did theirjob."

Two relievers bridged the way to Jeremy Accardo who earned hisfourth save. He has not allowed an earned run in 20 consecutiveinnings.

"I'm happy to be in this situation," Accardo said. "Sincespring training I've been out to prove to everybody that Ideserve to be here."

In two prior starts against the Orioles this season, Burnett was1-0 and allowed just three earned runs in 16 innings for a 1.69ERA. In his last start on Wednesday, he pitched his firstcomplete game of the season in a 2-1 win against Baltimore.

"He wasn't as sharp as he has been for us lately," Gibbon said."He got the win and that's the bottom line."

Perhaps in response to Glaus being hit, Burnett threw a pitchbehind Jay Gibbons in the bottom of the frame, prompting homeplate umpire Mark Wegner to warn both benches.

"It's a bad situation," Burnett said. "I'm going to stick upfor my teammates."

Gibbons said Cabrera has a history of throwing at Torontobatters.

"(Cabrera) has been known to do that," he said. "He did it acouple of times to us last year and already this year. Histeammates will let him know because they will get tired ofpaying the consequences."

Glaus had an RBI double and Phillips hit his first homer since11, 2005, to stake Toronto to a 2-0 lead. In four games againstthe Orioles, Glaus is batting .385 (5-for-13) with a homer andsix RBI, including the game-winning RBI in each game of the BlueJays' three-game sweep of the Orioles last week in Toronto.

Baltimore tied it in the fourth on an RBI single by Aubrey Huffand a double-play grounder.

Brian Roberts hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning for theOrioles, who have lost four consecutive games to Toronto.
