Cabrera singles home game-winner in 10th for Yankees

NY YANKEES 12, TORONTO 11
BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- Melky Cabrera singled home thegame-winning run in the 10th inning to lift the New York Yankeesto a 12-11 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays Saturday.

Cabrera also threw out Matt Stairs from center field at theplate in the top half of the 10th to keep the score knotted at11.

The win moved New York (89-65) within two games of the BostonRed Sox (91-63) in the American League East and improved itslead in the wild card to five games over the Detroit Tigers(84-70). Both Boston and Detroit play Saturday night.

Cabrera's heroics made a winner of Jeff Karstens (1-4), whopitched the 10th inning.

The winning rally was started by Jorge Posada, who led off the10th with a ground-rule double off Toronto reliever Josh Towers(5-10). Johnny Damon ran for Posada and advanced to third on aflyout by Robinson Cano, setting the stage for Cabrera.

The Yankees also had a big day from Alex Rodriguez, who had fourhits and drove in four runs.

The Yankees tied the score at 11-11 in the bottom of the eighthinning on a two-run single by Cabrera after Gregg Zaun and pinchhitter Hector Luna came through with back-to-back RBI singlesin the top of the eighth inning to give the Blue Jays a two-runlead.

Toronto starter Shaun Marcum left the game after three inningswith a sore right knee and lefthanded reliever Scott Downsdeparted with a back injury after allowing Hideki Matsui'stwo-run single in the sixth.

Matsui's hit put the Yankees ahead 6-3, but that lead quicklyevaporated thanks to some spotty relief work by Jose Veras andEdwar Ramirez in the top of the seventh.

Veras gave up two hits, two walks and threw two wild pitcheswhile Ramirez allowed a two-run double to Russ Adams and an RBIsingle to Adam Lind that put Toronto ahead 8-6.

Toronto's lead was also short-lived as Brandon League and BrianWolfe teamed up to surrender the lead. League gave up a two-runsingle to Cabrera and Wolfe surrendered Rodriguez's RBI single, which put the Yankees in front 9-8.

The Yankees struggled to hold that lead as manager Joe Torreentrusted the eighth to Kyle Farnsworth, who gave up an infieldsingle to Ray Olmedo and walked Reed Johnson.

Following a visit from Torre, Farnsworth nearly coughed up thelead, but a diving stop by first baseman Wilson Betemit on MattStairs' liner kept runners at first and second.

The momentum from Betemit's play was short-lived as Alex Rioslined a single into left field, setting the stage for Zaun.

Re: AL: TORONTO at NY YANKEES

omfg what a game!! we gave up like 3 leads during that 11 inning game. this woulda been horrible if we lost this game after losing last nights game. glad we won and this is another game where it builds confidence as we go towards the playoffs. hopefully boston loses but they are winning right now. GO YANKS!

Cabrera singles home game-winner in 10th for Yankees

NY YANKEES 12, TORONTO 11 (10 INNINGS)
By Larry Fleisher
    PA SportsTicker Contributing Writer

BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- With the postseason fast approachingMelky Cabrera was struggling, but his manager and teammates neverwavered in their confidence of the young center fielder andexperienced the rewards for it.

In one of the strangest games ever played in franchise history,Cabrera singled home the game-winning run with two outs in thebottom of the 10th inning as the Yankees pulled out a 12-11victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday.

Cabrera came into the game with three hits in his last 38at-bats, and went 0-for-5 in Friday's 14-inning loss beforebeing lifted for a pinch hitter. In this one, he went hitlessin his first four at-bats, including one with the bases loadedin the second inning.

"Everybody supports me," said Cabrera, who used reserve catcherJose Molina as his translator. "That's one of the reasons why Idon't keep myself down because everybody helps him to keep himhappy."

"He's important to this lineup," Yankees catcher Jorge Posada"He's been slumping a little bit and he comes out of it with abig hit today. It just tells you a lot about this kid, he keepscoming and it's good to see."

But when the five-hour marathon was over, Cabrera tied hiscareer high with five RBI and the final one sent the Yankees totheir 13th win in 16 games.

"He's a good player," Joe Torre said. "I have a lot ofconfidence in him. The only thing he suffers from isinexperience. He's got a big heart and he just competes reallywell."

The final rally was started by Posada, who had a ground-ruledouble to left field off Toronto reliever Josh Towers. JohnnyDamon ran for Posada and following an intentional walk to JasonGiambi, moved to third on a flyout by Robinson Cano.

After Towers fanned Wilson Betemit on three pitches, Cabrerasingled over second baseman Aaron Hill's head.
