CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- Louisville is known for its offensiveprowess, but it was a much-maligned defense that knockedCincinnati from the ranks of the unbeaten.

The Cardinals' defense made a fourth-down stop near midfield inthe fourth quarter and a goal-line stand minutes later to pullout a 28-24 victory over the 15th-ranked Bearcats, who had thenation's longest winning streak for about three hours.

Cincinnati's nine-game winning streak became the longest currentstreak in the nation after top-ranked Louisiana State dropped a43-37 contest in three overtimes against Kentucky earlierSaturday.

But that didn't last long, as Brian Brohm threw for 352 yardsand three touchdowns for Louisville (4-3, 1-1 Big EastConference), which has won five straight meetings withCincinnati.

After Cincinnati quarterback Ben Mauk's third touchdown of thenight and second to Marcus Barnett gave Cincinnati a 21-14 leadwith 4:54 left in the third period, Louisville went 83 yards onsix plays, tying the contest on Brohm's six-yard TD pass toPatrick Carter with 20 seconds left in the third.

On its first drive of the fourth quarter, Cincinnati went for a4th-and-1 from the Louisville 45, but Mauk was stopped for nogain.

Brohm then hit Harry Douglas for 52 yards down the leftsideline, and Anthony Allen scored a three-yard TD run on thenext play to give Louisville its first lead, 28-21, with 11:27left in the game.

Cincinnati then drove the length of the field for a 1st-and-goalfrom the 2 before settling for a 24-yard field goal by JakeRogers with 8:46 remaining.

Louisville's defense forced two incompletions and a rush for noyards during its stand.

Louisville controlled the ball for most of the remaining time, but the Bearcats got the ball back for one last drive. However,Mauk was intercepted in his own end of the field to seal thegame for Louisville.

Mauk was 24-of-43 for 316 yards and three TDs, but hisinterception was the last of four Cincinnati (6-1, 1-1)turnovers.

Louisville's defense had surrendered at least 38 points in fourof its five previous games and allowed 203 yards in the firstquarter before stiffening.

"This is our most complete game," Louisville coach SteveKragthorpe said. It's an upset. All the (ESPN) Game Day peoplepicked Cincinnati."

Cincinnati's nine-game winning streak became the longest currentstreak in the nation after top-ranked Louisiana State dropped a43-37 contest in three overtimes against Kentucky earlierSaturday.

"Give Louisville credit. With their front four, they got goodpressure," Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly said. "(Quarterback BenMauck) had to move his feet too much. You don't like to see itwhen your quarterback can't set his feet. They played a lot ofzone, but they got good pressure with their front four."

The streak didn't last long, as Brian Brohm threw for 352 yardsand three touchdowns for Louisville (4-3, 1-1 Big EastConference), which has won five straight meetings withCincinnati.

"We tried to take care of the ball in the passing game," Brohmsaid. "We knew they would give us things underneath and whenthey do that they are trying to bait you into trying to forcethings."

After Mauk's third touchdown of the night and second to MarcusBarnett gave Cincinnati a 21-14 lead with 4:54 left in the thirdperiod, Louisville went 83 yards on six plays, tying thecontest on Brohm's six-yard TD pass to Patrick Carter with 20seconds left in the third.

On its first drive of the fourth quarter, Cincinnati went for a4th-and-1 from the Louisville 45, but Mauk was stopped inchesshort on a sneak.

"After we didn't make it, absolutely, I second-guessed myself,"Kelly said. "But that's something I do and will continue to do."

After surrendering 203 yards in the first three drives toCincinnati, Louisville allowed just 240 the final threequarters.

"Louisville's got a great defense. It's not like you're justplaying against air out there," Mauck said. "I made some baddecisions. I'm going to have to play better if we're going tocontinue to win. Win or lose, we were going to put this gameaway. We're 0-0 going into the next game."

Brohm then hit Harry Douglas for 52 yards down the left sidelineas he wrestled the ball away from the defender, and AnthonyAllen scored a three-yard TD run on the next play to giveLouisville its first lead, 28-21, with 11:27 left in the game.

"On Harry's catch, they had it pretty well covered but I justthrew it up there and thought, 'Harry make a play,'" Brohm said.

Cincinnati then drove the length of the field for a 1st-and-goalfrom the 2 before settling for a 24-yard field goal by JakeRogers with 8:46 remaining.

Louisville's defense forced two incompletions and a rush for noyards during its stand.

"Like anytime two good teams go after it, it comes down to justa couple of plays," Kelly said. "We had first-and-goal from the2 and couldn't get a touchdown. We had to settle for three, andthat's the difference in the game."

Louisville controlled the ball for most of the remaining time, converting a fourth-and-1 from its own 29. Brohm got the yardwith a few inches to spare, and Louisville was able to runprecious minutes off the clock.

"The fourth down call, I really didn't want to give them theball yet," Kragthorpe said. "We only needed a yard, so I said,'What the heck we came to win.'"

"I was a little surprised we went for the first down, but I washappy when the call came in," Brohm said. "It showed he hadconfidence in us. I had confidence I was going to get it."

The Bearcats got the ball back for one last drive.
