SYRACUSE, New York (Ticker) -- This time, Pat White's injurydidn't hurt West Virginia.

The Heisman Trophy hopeful ran for a touchdown and threw foranother as 13th-ranked West Virginia blasted Syracuse, 55-14, ina lopsided Big East Conference tilt on Saturday.

A game-time decision to start after missing the second half oflast week's 21-13 loss to South Florida with a thigh bruise,White also was forced out of this game with an injury.

"Pat (White) has a strained muscle," West Virginia coach RichRodriguez said. "We think he will be fine with the open week(October 13). I thought Pat played really well."

White left in the third quarter Saturday and did not returnafter suffering what team trainers initially called a "ribirritation." Unlike the September 28 loss to South Florida, theMountaineers' first of the season, the junior departed with thegame well in hand.

The Mountaineers (5-1, 1-1 Big East) rolled to a 31-7 halftimelead and held a 38-7 advantage when their signal-caller wasinjured at the 8:25 mark of the third quarter. White finished12-of-15 for 148 yards and no interceptions while carrying 14times for 89 yards.

"Losing takes some confidence from you, and it's important toget it back by making plays," Rodriguez said. "I felt that wehad it back at halftime just by hearing the guys talk."

Fullback Owen Schmitt contributed two short touchdown runs andSteve Slaton carried 15 times for 72 yards as the Mountaineersbeat the Orange (1-5, 1-1) for the sixth consecutive time.

West Virginia's offense was able to strike quickly afterdefensive back Ryan Mundy intercepted Orange quarterback AndrewRobinson on the opening drive and returned the ball to the 12.

Schmitt scored from seven yards out moments later after takingan option pitch from White.

"Owen has tailback skills and he is obviously hard to bring downwhen he gets going," Rodriguez said. "They were playing us acertain way that gave us a chance to get it to him. They weretrying to make sure that Pat didn't hurt them on the perimeterand that opened things up for Owen."

Syracuse tied the game on its ensuing drive when Curtis Brinkleycapped a 10-play drive with a one-yard leap, but theMountaineers ran away with things thereafter.

Leading 14-7 in the second quarter, West Virginia took controlwhen defensive lineman Keilen Dykes intercepted Robinson andreturned the ball 19 yards for a score.

Schmitt's second touchdown of the game, a one-yard plunge, and a49-yard field goal by Pat McAfee in the final minutes of thehalf all but salted away the game.

"I'm very disappointed. I expected to see a closer margin thanwhat it turned out to be," Syracuse coach Greg Robinson said."It's frustrating and I think it's a real challenge for us rightnow. We have to dig deep right now and find a way to fightback."

Andrew Robinson finished 5-of-15 for 100 yards with onetouchdown and the two interceptions.

"Somebody jinxed him when one of you guys asked me on Tuesdayabout him not throwing an interception in 197 passes or whateverit was (104)," Greg Robinson said. "I didn't have any clue andI hated that I heard that. I'm not trying to be funny, I'mnot. It did click in my head."

Darius Reynaud hauled in White's only touchdown pass of thegame, a 20-yard strike, early in the third quarter. JarrettBrown and Jock Sanders also got in the end zone for theMountaineers, who gave Rodriguez his 100th career win.

"That's nice, but I haven't played a single play in any of thosegames," Rodriguez said.
