UNIONDALE, New York (Ticker) -- More third-period heroics byMiroslav Satan helped the New York Islanders keep Martin Brodeurone victory shy of a milestone.

Satan scored during a two-man advantage to snap a third-periodtie and Rick DiPietro stopped 20 shots as the Islanders edgedthe New Jersey Devils, 2-1, on Saturday and prevented Brodeurfrom winning his 500th career game.

Dainius Zubrus tallied for the Devils, who remained in lastplace in the Atlantic Division.

Satan's goal was his fifth of the season and third winner in thethird period in as many games. The others came last Saturdayin Al Arbour's 1,500th game as coach of the Islanders and againTuesday against the New York Rangers.

"It's the way it's going. It's pointless to analyze it," Satansaid. "I'm just glad I could help the team."

The Islanders were awarded a two-man advantage following across-checking call on Devils defenseman Sheldon Brookbank alongwith a bench minor for unsportsmanlike conduct at 5:13 of thethird. It was unclear on who was responsible for the benchminor.

"All I will say is that it was taken behind the bench," said NewJersey coach Brent Sutter, a former Islander. "I won't makeany other comment. It wasn't any of the players."

The unusual call even caught Islanders coach Ted Nolan bysurprise.

"I had no idea," he said. "I was just trying to figure out whowas going out for the power play. Good for us, bad for them."

The club operated patiently and scored at 6:25, when Satan - whowas stationed to the right of the net - converted across-crease pass by Trent Hunter from below the left faceoffcircle.

"No matter who is in goal, it's difficult to stop pucks 5-on-3,"Sutter said.

Brodeur, who also made 20 saves, was trying to become just thesecond goalie in NHL history to reach the 500-win plateau. Hallof Famer Patrick Roy is the all-time leader with 551 victories.

"It's a big number," Brodeur admitted. "It'll be a great thing, when I get there. It's because of longevity and because I'veplayed with a pretty good team all this time."

The reigning Vezina Trophy winner, Brodeur played in his 905thgame, while Roy reached 500 in his 933rd career appearance.

Brodeur has 38 wins against the Islanders and had won his lastsix starts against them. But he ran into a team with anefficient defense that allowed just 11 shots over the first twoperiods.

DiPietro made a key stop on a backhander by Zubrus 90 secondsinto the second and a kick save on Brian Gionta with fiveminutes left in the session.

Islanders captain Bill Guerin was hit above the eye with a puckin the first period. He returned in the second but left forgood after two shifts.

"He's feeling OK, but anytime you're messing with the eye, youwant to be cautious," Nolan said.

The Islanders went 1-for-4 with the man advantage, while theDevils did not receive a power-play opportunity.
