Greene, Bard help Padres score five runs in 11th, defeat Reds

<h3>SAN DIEGO 12, CINCINNATI 7 (11 INNINGS)</h3>CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- The San Diego Padres picked up stellarcloser Trevor Hoffman.


After Hoffman blew a ninth-inning save, Khalil Greene drew abases loaded walk in the 12th inning and Josh Bard followed witha two-run triple as the Padres posted a 12-7 victory over theCincinnati Reds on Friday night.


Rookie Kevin Kouzmanoff belted a two-run homer later in theframe and Adrian Gonzalez and Greene had three RBI each for SanDiego, which had not scored more than five runs in its sevenprevious games.


The Padres, who had lost two straight and three of four, cuttheir deficit to 2 1/2 games behind the National LeagueWest-leading Arizona Diamondbacks. Arizona is playingWashington later on Friday.


After David Weathers (2-4) walked the bases loaded in the 12th,Greene hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Gonzalez fromthird for an 8-7 lead. After a double steal, Bard then lined apitch from Weathers into the right field corner to make it 10-7.

Kouzmanoff then hit the first pitch he saw from Victor Santosdeep into the seats in left to increase the lead to five.

Rookie Kevin Cameron (1-0), the seventh pitcher for Padres,earned his first major league victory by hurling two innings ofone-hit relief.


Hoffman was given the ball in the ninth with a 7-6 lead, butBrandon Phillips led off with a double into the left-centerfield gap. After Ken Griffey Jr. struck out, Scott Hattebergbelted a double off the left field wall to tie the game.

It was Hoffman's first blown save opportunity in 26 chancessince blowing an attempt on April 27 vs. the Los AngelesDodgers.


Greene gave San Diego a 7-6 lead in the seventh with arun-scoring single off Jared Burton.


Cincinnati took an early lead on RBIs by Jeff Conine and AdamDunn in the first inning and a run-scoring single by NorrisHopper in the second gave the Reds a 3-0 advantage.

However Brian Giles homered with a man on in the top of thethird to cut San Diego's deficit to 3-2 before Griffey hit his590th homer in the bottom of the frame for a 4-2 lead.

Gonzalez put the Padres in front in the fifth, when with twoouts and runners on the corners, he belted his 19th homer of theseason off Reds starter Matt Belisle to put San Diego up 5-4.

After Greene gave the Padres a two-run lead with a leadoff homerin the sixth off Reds reliever Gary Majewski, Cincinnati tiedthe score at 6-6 in the bottom of the frame on RBIs by MarkBellhorn and Hopper.

 

Greene, Bard help Padres score five runs in 11th, defeat Reds

<h3>SAN DIEGO 12, CINCINNATI 7 (11 INNINGS)</h3>CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- The San Diego Padres picked up stellarcloser Trevor Hoffman.


After Hoffman blew a ninth-inning save, Khalil Greene drew abases loaded walk in the 12th inning and Josh Bard followed witha two-run triple as the Padres posted a 12-7 victory over theCincinnati Reds on Friday night.


Rookie Kevin Kouzmanoff belted a two-run homer later in theframe and Adrian Gonzalez and Greene had three RBI each for SanDiego, which had not scored more than five runs in its sevenprevious games.


The Padres, who had lost two straight and three of four, cuttheir deficit to 2 1/2 games behind the National LeagueWest-leading Arizona Diamondbacks. Arizona is playingWashington later on Friday.


After David Weathers (2-4) walked the bases loaded in the 12th,Greene hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Gonzalez fromthird for an 8-7 lead. After a double steal, Bard then lined apitch from Weathers into the right field corner to make it 10-7.

Kouzmanoff then hit the first pitch he saw from Victor Santosdeep into the seats in left to increase the lead to five.

Rookie Kevin Cameron (1-0), the seventh pitcher for Padres,earned his first major league victory by hurling two innings ofone-hit relief.


Hoffman was given the ball in the ninth with a 7-6 lead, butBrandon Phillips led off with a double into the left-centerfield gap. After Ken Griffey Jr. struck out, Scott Hattebergbelted a double off the left field wall to tie the game.

It was Hoffman's first blown save opportunity in 26 chancessince blowing an attempt on April 27 vs. the Los AngelesDodgers.


Greene gave San Diego a 7-6 lead in the seventh with arun-scoring single off Jared Burton.


Cincinnati took an early lead on RBIs by Jeff Conine and AdamDunn in the first inning and a run-scoring single by NorrisHopper in the second gave the Reds a 3-0 advantage.

However Brian Giles homered with a man on in the top of thethird to cut San Diego's deficit to 3-2 before Griffey hit his590th homer in the bottom of the frame for a 4-2 lead.

Gonzalez put the Padres in front in the fifth, when with twoouts and runners on the corners, he belted his 19th homer of theseason off Reds starter Matt Belisle to put San Diego up 5-4.

After Greene gave the Padres a two-run lead with a leadoff homerin the sixth off Reds reliever Gary Majewski, Cincinnati tiedthe score at 6-6 in the bottom of the frame on RBIs by MarkBellhorn and Hopper.
