INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Indianapolis Colts needed barelyover a half to show there would be no Super Bowl hangover.

The Colts scored 24 consecutive points in the second half andopened up defense of their Super Bowl championship with animpressive 41-10 romp over the New Orleans Saints on Thursday inthe opening game of the NFL season.

Quarterback Peyton Manning shrugged off a lackluster first halfand carved up the Saints' defense following the intermission, leading four straight scoring drives as Indianapolis (1-0)improved to 8-1 in its last nine season openers.

"Our execution was better (in the second half)," Manning said."We never really got into a good rhythm in the first half. Wehad a lot of first downs, second downs, third downs, but theywere doing a great job forcing us to punt. We had some3rd-and-longs due to penalties, and we really wanted to be sharpto start the second half."

The Super Bowl MVP, Manning completed 18-of-30 for 288 yards andthree touchdown passes. Reggie Wayne caught two TD passes andfinished with seven receptions for 115 yards. Marvin Harrisonadded 83 yards and one TD on four catches.

Cornerback Jason David, a former Colt who signed with the Saintsin the offseason, was victimized on all three touchdowns.

"We don't really do that (pick on one player)," Manning said."When you have Marvin and Reggie, you're always going to try andget it to them. If you have a good day, then they say thatyou're picking on one guy, but believe me, we're always tryingto get it to one of those two guys."

David did return a fumble by Wayne 55 yards for a touchdown inthe first half but he was burned by Wayne twice in the secondhalf.

"A lot of my problem is just looking in the backfield," Davidsaid. "Whenever you've got your eyes in the backfield, you'realways going to miss the receiver."

Second-year running back Joseph Addai bounced back from acrunching hit on the very first play from scrimmage to rush for118 yards and a touchdown. He also had three receptions for 25yards.

"The offensive line was doing a great job," Addai said. "(Thedefense)has got to be nervous when you have players like Reggieand Marvin on the outside and Peyton as quarterback. It makesit kind of easy."

Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who led the league with 4,418passing yards in 2006, was bottled up by the Colts defense. Hefinished just 28-of-41 for 192 yards and two interceptions - thesecond one getting returned 82 yards by Matt Giordano in thefinal minute.

"I think there was a couple of times when we tried to force itdown the field a little bit we really should have stuck with thecompletion throw," Brees said. "They got on us a few timeswith their pass rush. If we could have had just a split-secondlonger on a couple of plays, something might have opened up downthe field.

"You've got to give them credit. They were ready to play."

Saints second-year back Reggie Bush was limited to 45 totalyards.

Neither high-powered offense distinguished itself in the opening30 minutes, leading to a 10-10 halftime tie.

"It was a game where, at halftime, I thought we did a number ofthings right defensively," Saints coach Sean Payton said. "Westruggled to generate the offense we wanted early in the game, and then it carried over into the second half. That'sdisappointing, and it's disappointing in the way it finished."

After the Saints (0-1) went three-and-out on their firstpossession of the second half, the Colts took command.

Manning drove his team 71 yards in eight plays, highlighted by a42-yard pass to Marvin Harrison to the 2-yard line. Addaiburst in from there to give the Colts the lead for good, 17-10,with 9:45 to play in third quarter.

Indy's defense then forced another three-and-out and Manningneeded just four plays to cover 69 yards, capped by a 29-yardscoring strike to Wayne to extend the margin to 24-10 with 6:11left in the quarter.

After opening the first half 8-of-17 for 106 yards, Manning was5-of-6 for 102 yards on the first two drives of the second half.

Trailing by two touchdowns, the Saints finally were on the moveuntil linebacker Freddie Keiaho picked off Brees and return itto the Saints 47.

Manning hit Wayne for 31 yards on the very first play, settingup Adam Vinatieri for his second 33-yard field goal of the gameand a 27-10 lead 48 seconds into the final quarter.

Wayne hauled in his second TD pass from Manning - this time from45 yards - just over two minutes later as the lead ballooned to34-10 with 10:05 remaining.

"It was a great start to the second half, coming out and gettingthat touchdown," Manning said. "Our defense played great allnight and our offense gave them their only touchdown. Reggiehad three touchdowns tonight; he caught two and gave them one."

Indianapolis broke on top, 7-0, when Manning hit Harrison for a27-yard touchdown with 1:36 left in the opening quarter. Itmarked the 107th time Manning and Harrison have hooked up on ascoring pass, extending their league record for the most TDs bya quarterback-receiver combination.

NFL: NEW ORLEANS (0-1) at INDIANAPOLIS (1-0)

Super Bowl champ Colts open at home against Saints

New Orleans (10-6) at Indianapolis (12-4) Thursday 8:30 pm EDT

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) - For the first time in his illustriouscareer, Peyton Manning will enter a season as a Super Bowlchampion.

Led by Manning and their explosive offense, the IndianapolisColts begin defense of their Super Bowl title Thursday nightwhen they host the New Orleans Saints in the opening game of theNFL season.

Arguably the NFL's best quarterback who traditionally came upshort in the postseason, Manning silenced all his critics lastseason in leading the Colts to their first championship sincethe franchise relocated to Indianapolis prior to the 1984season.

Manning capped his playoff run by being named the Most ValuablePlayer of Super Bowl XLI as the Colts posted a 29-17 victoryover the Chicago Bears.

It also was another banner regular season for Manning, who ledthe league with 31 touchdown passes and was second with 4,397yards through the air.

With Manning and Pro Bowl wide receivers Marvin Harrison andReggie Wayne leading the way, the Colts were third in the leaguein scoring last season, averaging 26.7 points.

There is one change for the Colts this season with Joseph Addaitaking over as the featured back. As a rookie last season,Addai rushed for 1,081 yards and seven touchdowns whilesplitting time with Dominic Rhodes.

The Colts are accustomed to fast starts, going 14-2 in Septemberover the last five seasons. They also are the only team to go9-0 in back-to-back seasons.

Indianapolis has won seven of its last eight season openers.

While the Colts hoisted the Lombardi Trophy, the Saints were theNFL's feel-good story in 2006 after winning the NFC South andcoming within a game of meeting the Colts in the Super Bowl.

The Saints' resurgence was led by NFL Coach of the Year SeanPayton and Pro Bowl quarterback Drew Brees.

An offensive mastermind, Payton put together an offense that wasactually more explosive than the Colts. New Orleans led theleague in total offense, averaging 391.5 yards while rankingfifth in scoring at 25.8 points.

After signing as a free agent, Brees enjoyed a monster firstseason in New Orleans. He led the league with 4,418 passingyards and was third with 26 scoring strikes.

Brees' favorite target was wide receiver Marques Colston, whohad 70 receptions for 1,038 yards and eight touchdowns as arookie.

Brees is looking forward to facing the Colts.

"I mean, people think we can hang with these guys," Brees toldthe New Orleans Times-Picayune. "Even if they didn't, itwouldn't matter what they thought because as a team we're veryconfident. We know what we can do. We're not satisfied wherewe finished the season last year. And we've been lookingforward to this opportunity for a long time."

The Saints also have two capable running backs in DeuceMcAllister and Reggie Bush. McAllister rushed for 1,057 yardsand 10 touchdowns last season while Bush gained 565 yards on theground and caught 88 passes for 742 yards.

With both teams featuring explosive offenses, it figures to be achallenge for both squads defensively.

Indianapolis struggled for much of last season, ranking 23rd inscoring defense by allowing 22.5 points per game. New Orleanswas slightly better, giving up 20.1 points per contest.

"This is like must-see TV," Saints cornerback and former ColtJason David told the Baton Rouge Advocate. "It's two excitingoffenses with great players. You've got a lot of star power onoffense. At any given time a big play can happen. If I was afan, I wouldn't miss a snap."

In the last meeting between the teams in September 2003, Manningthrew for six touchdowns - all in the first three quarters - tolead the Colts to a 55-21 victory.

What a way to start a season. That 46 yard TD pass to Wayne was so beautiful.

A QB will probably be the MVP this season.
