Ovechkin, who has recorded at least a goal in all three of hishome openers, put the Capitals on the board with 5:36 to go inthe first. Fellow Russian Viktor Kozlov carried the puck beforedropping it to Ovechkin, who whistled a shot from the high slotpast the stick of goaltender John Grahame for a 1-0 lead.

It was Ovechkin's 99th career goal and 200th point.

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitalslooked good in red.

Ovechkin scored the game's initial goal and Olaf Kolzig made 23saves as the Capitals posted a 2-0 victory over the CarolinaHurricanes in their home opener Saturday night.

Defenseman Milan Jurcina added a power-play goal and Kolzigposted his 35th career shutout for Washington, which debuted itsnew red home jerseys.

"We just played hard and played our system," Ovechkin said. "Wedo everything until we win. Olie did an unbelievable jobtoday. We scored twice and Olie makes unbelievable saves. Hewins the game tonight."

One night after a solid season-opening 3-1 victory in Atlanta, the Capitals improved to 2-0-0 with their sixth consecutivehome-opening win. Washington is now 10-2-1 in its last 13 homeopeners.

Saturday's victory marked the first time the Capitals havestarted with two straight wins since a 3-0-0 beginning to the2002-03 campaign - the last time the club made the playoffs.

"Yeah, we've been talking about it all summer," said Kolzig, whoposted the Capitals' first shutout in a home opener since a 1-0victory over Anaheim on October 10, 1998. "We plan to make theplayoffs. I think we're going to surprise a lot of people. Wetotally believe that this is what we're capable of."

"We play very well with each other," Ovechkin said of histeaming with Kozlov. "We understand each other. We talk a lotabout how we have to play. Every game, it will be better andbetter."

"That's the best lane exchange I've seen in this building in afew years," Capitals coach Glen Hanlon said. "They seemed likethey enjoyed playing with each other."

It was Ovechkin's 99th career goal and 200th point. DefensemanJohn Erskine also assisted on the play to notch points inback-to-back games for the first time since February.

Five minutes into the second period, Jurcina scored from 20 feetout as his shot was deflected by Carolina blue-liner GlenWesley under the pads of Grahame to make it 2-0.

"On the first goal, Ovechkin made a pretty good shot," Ovechkinsaid. "The second one, there was a deflection right in front."

Playing in his first game after missing the season opener withan ankle sprain, Alexander Semin picked up an assist on theplay.

"I thought Washington was on its toes all night, offensively anddefensively," Hurricanes coach Peter Laviolette said. "Anytimea puck came up in question, it was their puck. We showed morespark in the third period, but it was too little, too late."

The goals were more than enough for Kolzig, who stopped twoshots in the first period, nine in the second and 12 in thethird for his first shutout since April 3. The 19-year veteran, who was making his season debut, has now played in 658 careergames - eight away from tying Mike Richter for second on theall-time list among netminders.

"It's fun when you get those because generally, you usually comeout with a win," Kolzig said. "There were some hairy momentsin there, it probably wasn't my most technical game. There wasa lot of scrambling, but that's also part of my game, and guysalso did a great job of blocking them out from getting anyrebounds."

Prior to blanking Florida on April 3, Kolzig had last posted ashutout on February 15, 2004.

"When you can limit teams like Atlanta and Carolina to chancesunder 10, then the guys are doing the job," Kolzig said. "Forthe most part, it's because everybody as a unit is playing greatin the defensive zone. We're all communicating well, thegoalie lets the D know what to do, the D are talking to theforwards. Right now, everything seems to be working prettygood."

Grahame, who received the start for Carolina after Cam Ward hadbeen in the crease the previous two games, made 31 saves.

"This being their home opener, they came out with a lot ofjump," Grahame said. "We knew the crowd would be jumping. Whenyou've got that adrenaline pumping, it's something you'd liketo match, and we couldn't do it for the first 40 minutes."
