"We needed to rebound," Stillman said. "We got an effort fromeverybody and that was the difference. We played a smart game."

"I think it's how you respond to those situations is what reallymatters," Ward said. "Obviously things didn't go well inBuffalo but we did a good job of leaving that result in Buffaloand once we got into New York it was like a new mind-set."

Ward had a quiet first period as he faced just seven shots, including none in the first six-plus minutes. He had a two-goallead to work with after Scott Walker scored 5:22 into thecontest and Stillman tallied with 16 seconds remaining in thefirst.

"I think the big thing is that we started off right," Ward said."You look at our first period, I think that's probably one ofthe best first periods we had in an extremely long time. It setus up for the rest of the night."

Carolina made it a three-goal lead midway through the third whendefenseman David Tanabe scored.

Stillman capped the scoring late in the third for Carolina, which has scored four goals in its last three victories.

Ward made 11 more saves in the second, including several keystops. He made a blocker save on Scott Gomez less than 90seconds in, twice denied Chris Drury on point-blankopportunities and then made a glove save on Jaromir Jagr with10:17 remaining before stopping Martin Straka's stuff attempt.

"Cam played fantastic tonight," said Hurricanes center MattCullen, who two assists. "It's one of those things when you'restruggling like that, you need your goalie to step up and have ahuge effort and he did it."

Ward made 10 more saves in the third and also caught a breakwhen Drury's wrister went off the post with 14:33 remaining. Hefinished with his second shutout of the season and fourth ofhis career.

"He made some big saves for us, especially on the penalty killand a couple of times even strength," Carolina defenseman GlenWesley said. "But you need those saves at key moments in gamesand he made a couple of big stops for us, especially to help ushold on to the lead and we just continued to gain confidence asthe game went on."

The Rangers, who failed to win their third in a row, were shutout for the fourth time this season and failed to move into tiewith the Ottawa Senators for first place in the EasternConference.

The loss also came after New York scored three times in thefirst period en route to a 5-2 win at Ottawa on Saturday. Italso was the Rangers first four-goal defeat since a 9-2 loss inToronto last December 16.

"There was really nothing good about this one," New York rightwing Brendan Shanahan said. "It was a real stinker."

Carolina opened the scoring when Brandon Dubinsky committed aturnover in the defensive zone and Walker finished off the playby streaking through the slot and sliding it past goaltenderHenrik Lundqvist.

After the Hurricanes killed off a late power-play, they scored acrucial late goal when Stillman banked it past a Rangersdefender. The goal was initially credited to Cullen but changedlate in the third period.

"The start was important, but they got a better start and keptgoing after that," Lundqvist said.

After Ward withstood the flurry in the second, the Hurricanessealed the win with two goals less than two minutes apart.

Tanabe scored on a breakaway after a loose puck caromed offJagr's skate in the neutral zone, and Stillman capped his thirdtwo-goal game of the season by putting a backhander pastLundqvist.

"Tonight it wasn't there," Rangers coach Tom Renney said."There was not a synapse between the brain and the feet."
