    Lohse and Encarnacion help Reds avoid sweep

    <h3>CINCINNATI 5, ST LOUIS 1</h3>ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- Kyle Lohse and Edwin Encarnacion helpedprevent a three-game sweep with a 5-1 victory over the St. LouisCardinals on Thursday.

    Lohse threw eight solid innings and Encarnacion went 4-for-4with three RBI to help the Reds snap a four-game losing streak.

    Lohse (3-7), who has won two of his last three starts andallowed just three runs in that span, allowed just one run andseven hits in 8 1/3 innings with two strikeouts and one walk inthis one.

    The righthander's attempt for his second complete game of theseason was thwarted when he yielded a one-out double to AlbertPujols and an RBI single to Jim Edmonds in the ninth.

    David Weathers recorded the last two outs to complete the win.

    Encarnacion, who is hitting .592 (16-for-27) in his last sixgames, hit a two-run homer in the fourth off Cards starter AdamWainwright (4-5) for a 3-0 lead and had RBI single in theeighth.

    Ken Griffey Jr. opened the scoring in thew fourth by blastinghis 13th homer of the season and 576th of his career.

    Brandon Phillips then hit a single to left and one batter laterEncarnacion drilled a two-run homer to right - his second of theseason - to stake the Reds to a 3-0 lead.

    Adam Dunn extended the lead to 5-0 with his 15th homer of theseason in the sixth.

    Pujols had two hits and Edmonds drove in a run for theCardinals, who had their four-game winning streak snapped.

    Wainwright allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings.

    <h3>CINCINNATI 5, ST LOUIS 1</h3>ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- Kyle Lohse dominated the St. LouisCardinals while Edwin Encarnacion continued to hit everythingthrown his way.

    Lohse threw eight solid innings and Encarnacion went 4-for-4with three RBI to help the Reds snap a four-game losing streakwith a 5-1 win over the Cardinals on Thursday.

    Lohse (3-7), allowed just one run and seven hits in 8 1/3innings with two strikeouts and one walk in this one. He camewithin two outs of his second shutout in his last three starts.

    "It's a matter of executing and doing what you're trying to doout there and not make any mistakes," Lohse said. "(I was)getting ahead in the count and using the defense.

    "I was making good pitches early in the game and kind of putsome off-speed stuff in their mind. Then I was able to pitchoff the fastball more later in the game. Guys were making playswhich makes it easy to throw strikes. Make them swing early inthe count and our guys are on their toes. That's how it works."
