Peavy dominant again as Padres sweep Brewers

SAN DIEGO 3, MILWUKEE 0
SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Jake Peavy is doing it all for the SanDiego Padres.

Peavy pitched seven brilliant innings for his sixth straight winand stroked a run-scoring double to help the Padres complete asweep of the Milwaukee Brewers with a 3-0 victory on Sunday.

The 25-year-old righthander gave up just two hits and did notallow a runner past first base in shutting down the potentMilwaukee lineup. He struck out eight while walking one.

"I had good stuff today without question," Peavy said. "I justtook a nice easy pace and a good tempo through seven innings. Igot a little tired running around the bases, but good enough towin, absolutely."

Heath Bell pitched a perfect eighth and closer Trevor Hoffmanworked around a two-out single in the ninth for his second savein as many nights, his 15th of the year and the 497th of hiscareer.

"It's always good to have Jake on your side," Padres manager BudBlack said. "He's pitching great, no doubt. I thought todaywith Jake, I thought his mechanics were in control from thefirst pitch. He had all of his pitches working."

Adrian Gonzalez hit his team-leading 12th home run againstMilwaukee starter Jeff Suppan (6-5) as the Padres swept a teamfor this first time this season and maintained their spot infirst place of the National League West Division standings.

"It's nice," Gonzalez said. "Being able to get the first sweepof the year is always good, and we're playing good ball rightnow, so we're going to just try and keep rolling."

Suppan dueled Peavy into the sixth, allowing just the homerbefore the Padres broke through for two more runs in the sixth.Peavy's double plated Terrmel Sledge and Marcus Giles singledto drive in Peavy.

"Jake threw the ball great, there's no denying that," Suppansaid. "As far as my situation, obviously, a lot of walks, whichobviously kills you. (Peavy's double) hurt us right there inthe sixth. There were a couple of situations where I could'vemade better pitches, but didn't."

The 32-year-old Suppan allowed three runs in six innings, whilestriking out three and walking six batters.

"I thought (Suppan) threw the ball good, too, and kept us in thegame. He gave us a chance."

Milwaukee got blanked for the first time this season, has lost11 of 14.

"I don't think we played as bad as the record shows, but wedefinitely didn't stand out," Yost said. "I think it's the(entire) team. It always is everything. You can't pinpoint onething."

Brewers center fielder Tony Gwynn, Jr. went hitless in threechances against Peavy, including a strikeout in his firstat-bat.

"I didn't have any idea what to expect, because it was my firsttime facing him," Gwynn said. "As you saw, he was lights out.He was sinking it, cutting it. He was just working out on theouter half of the plate. When you have a strike zone like that,it's going to be tough."
