Marlins get to Hamels and knock off Phillies

FLORIDA 5, PHILADELPHIA 3
MIAMI (Ticker) -- Jason Wood and the Florida Marlins went toextra lengths to keep the Philadelphia Phillies from climbingover the .500 mark.

Wood had a key pinch hit and the Marlins rallied with a biginning to post a 5-3 victory over the Phillies on Tuesday in theopener of a three-game series.

Hamels (6-2) had won four straight decisions and was on his wayto becoming the first seven-game winner in the National Leaguebefore losing it in the sixth.

Florida trailed, 3-1, and had just two hits in the first fiveinnings, but Hamels started hanging his pitches.

"Everybody has a day, but he is going to win a lot of games in
this league," Florida manager Fredi Gonzalez said.

While Gonzalez is probably right, Hamels was more concerned withTuesday's setback than anything else.

"When you lose like this, it's something that you dwell on,"Hamels said. "Because you know you had it."

Hanley Ramirez doubled to lead off the frame and Miguel Cabreratripled after Phillies center fielder Aaron Rowand misjudged aball that he should have caught.

"I feel like it was my fault that we lost," Rowand said. "Imisjudged the ball and I take responsibility for the loss."

Rowand broke in and was unable to recover as the ball sailedover his glove. Ramirez scored on the play and Cabrera alsocame home when the relay throw from Chase Utley ended up in thedugout.

"I thought he was going to catch it," Cabrera said. "But whenhe didn't, I just kept running."

Josh Willingham followed with a double before Hamels struck outthe next two batters. Aaron Boone was then intentionally walkedand Wood came on to hit for Florida starter Scott Olsen anddelivered Florida's fourth extra-base hit of the game, a two-rundouble to give the Marlins a 5-3 lead.

"Let's just keep putting him out there in the right spot," saidGonzalez on Wood's recent success.

The Marlins are now on a season-high four-game winning streakwhile the Phillies missed an opportunity to move above .500 forthe first time.

Olsen (4-3) allowed three runs and four hits in six innings.

"I am just glad that we got the win," Olsen said. "It was thefirst game of the series and first game of the homestand, it'sbig. It gives us a little momentum boost. We have a littlewinning streak going and hopefully we can carry it over totomorrow."

Kevin Gregg pitched the ninth for his fourth save in as manychances.

Jayson Werth hit his first two home runs of the season for thePhillies, a solo shot in the first and a two-run homer in thethird, to make it 3-0. It was the third two-homer game ofWerth's career.

Hamels allowed five runs and six hits with eight strikeouts insix innings.
