Olsen, Treanor power Marlins past Pirates

<h3>FLORIDA 9, PITTSBURGH 7</h3>MIAMI (Ticker) -- Scott Olsen made it a long day for thePittsburgh Pirates right from the start, but Matt Treanor's homerun proved to be the difference on Thursday.

Olsen started the game by striking out the first five batters hefaced and Treanor's first homer of the season lifted theFlorida Marlins to a 9-7 victory over the Pirates on Thursdayafternoon.

The Marlins pounded out 15 hits, and survived a five-run seventhinning, to stop a four-game losing skid.

Treanor's home run, a two-run line-drive shot to left in thefifth, pushed Florida's lead to 8-2. It was his first home runsince July 27, 2006 at Atlanta.

Olsen (6-6) pitched six innings and gave up five runs on sevenhits, while striking out 10 and walking only two. Olsen waslifted after giving up consecutive doubles to Ronny Paulino andJose Castillo and walking pinch-hitter Josh Phelps.

The Marlins' bullpen struggled as 10 batters went to the platebefore Justin Miller got Paulino to fly out to center in theseventh.

Hanley Ramirez plated Alfredo Amezaga for an insurance run inthe eighth to give Florida a 9-7 lead.

Kevin Gregg recorded his 15th save of the season by working theninth inning. Adam LaRoche, who had been in a 4-for-42 slump onthe road, had a single in the first and then hit two-run blastoff Olsen in the third.

The Pirates have lost six of their last eight games. The Marlinsgave Olsen plenty of run support in the first, scoring fourruns on six hits, highlighted by rookie Brett Carroll's two-runsingle.

Florida extended the lead to 5-0 on a double by Miguel Cabrera.

Zach Duke (3-7), who was attempting to notch wins inback-to-back starts for the first time this season, struggledfrom the start. He gave up six runs and 12 hits in four inningsbefore giving way to Tony Armas.

The Pirates were looking for their first three-game series sweepof the Marlins since September 14-16, 1993.

Olsen, Treanor power Marlins past Pirates

<h3>FLORIDA 9, PITTSBURGH 7</h3>MIAMI (Ticker) -- Scott Olsen made it a long day for thePittsburgh Pirates right from the start, but Matt Treanor's homerun proved to be the difference on Thursday.

Olsen started the game by striking out the first five batters hefaced, and Treanor's first homer of the season lifted theFlorida Marlins to a 9-7 victory over the Pirates on Thursdayafternoon.

The Marlins pounded out 15 hits, and survived a five-run seventhinning to stop a four-game losing skid.

Treanor's home run, a two-run line-drive shot to left in thefifth, pushed Florida's lead to 8-2. It was his first home runsince July 27, 2006 at Atlanta.

"I knew he (Pirates starter Zach Duke) had a good sinker and agood slider," Treanor said. "I figured with a man on first, hewould try to keep the ball down and get me to roll over to theleft side of the infield. I saw the ball pretty decent and gotthe barrel on it and the ball went out."

Olsen (6-6) pitched six innings and gave up five runs on sevenhits, while striking out 10 and walking only two. Olsen waslifted after giving up consecutive doubles to Ronny Paulino andJose Castillo and walking pinch-hitter Josh Phelps.

The 10 strikeouts tied a season-high for Olsen, and the totalwas one of his career-high. The Marlins have won four of hislast five starts.

"He was outstanding," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "Thelast three to four starts he has pitched, he is getting towhere we want him or to where (he) was a year ago."

The Marlins' bullpen struggled as 10 batters went to the platebefore Justin Miller got Paulino to fly out to center in theseventh.

"It was not a great game, but the strikeouts make it look good,"Olsen said. "The pitch count got a little high, I got in sometrouble in the seventh and I put my relievers in some trouble."

Hanley Ramirez plated Alfredo Amezaga for an insurance run inthe eighth to give Florida a 9-7 lead.

Kevin Gregg recorded his 15th save of the season by working theninth inning.

Adam LaRoche, who had been in a 4-for-42 slump on the road, hada single in the first and then hit two-run blast off Olsen inthe third.

"It seems we fight back to get ourselves right back in it, butwe just can't push over the hump to get that extra run or two,"LaRoche said. "Obviously, that's the hardest time to score whenit's late in the game and they bring their closer out."

The Pirates have lost six of their last eight games.

The Marlins gave Olsen plenty of run support in the first, scoringfour runs on six hits, highlighted by rookie Brett Carroll'stwo-run single.

Florida extended the lead to 5-0 on a double by Miguel Cabrera.

"Nobody could get through that seventh it seemed like, but wedid," Gonzalez said. "Every win is big. I don't care if youare 20 games above .500 or six games below .500. Every win atthe major league level is big. It is difficult to win games,but we got it done today."

Duke (3-7), who was attempting to notch wins in back-to-backstarts for the first time this season, struggled from the start.He gave up six runs and 12 hits in four innings before givingway to Tony Armas.

"Honestly, I could have made some better two-strike pitches,"Duke said. "I made them to where they could put the bat on theball. They're a team that chases pitches out of the zone and Ididn't execute those pitches.

"It's one of those things were I know there's a reason whythings didn't turn out my way, so I'm not going to (read) toomuch into it and say, 'Oh my goodness, the sky is falling.' I'mjust going to look at it for what it is and move on to the nextone."

The Pirates were looking for their first three-game series sweepof the Marlins since September 14-16, 1993.
