SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) - The Pittsburgh Pirates may have theworst record in the National League but that didn't stop themfrom sweeping another last-place team.

Josh Phelps was 2-for-4 with four RBI, including a two-runhomer, and Tom Gorzelanny pitched a five-hit shutout as thePirates blanked the San Francisco Giants, 5-0, on Sundayafternoon.

Gorzelanny (11-6) turned in the best outing of his young career, tossing his first complete-game shutout and becoming the firstlefthander to win 11 games for the Pirates since Oliver Perezwent 12-10 in 2004.

"I don't think you automatically think you're going to have agreat day, you just go out there and pitch smart and keep theball down," Gorzelanny said. "It feels good. It was a longtime coming. It was a big game and I had flirted with (acomplete game) a couple of other times and I was actually ableto come through on it."

"You know Tommy Gorzelanny has obviously pitched some very goodgames for us this year but I think what I saw today was probablythe best game he's pitched," Pirates manager Jim Tracy said.

Gorzelanny got stronger as the game went along. In the lastfive innings, he faced the minimum number of batters and retiredthe final 17 in a row.

"I knew I had to go out and make pitches and get guys swinging, and I think a big pitch I had was my changeup and I had guys wayout in front of that and making guys get outs," Gorzelannysaid. "I just felt confident that I could make some pitches andget guys to swing and get themselves out."

It was the first three-game win streak for the Pirates sincereeling off four straight from July 3-7. Pittsburgh has beatenSan Francisco six straight times and 11 of the last 13 gameshere.

The Giants have been an embarrassment on the field, having onlyBarry Bonds and his home run record as the only reason fanscontinue to flock to AT&T Park.

"I felt like going after him was going to be a good idea and Igot him on a couple of breaking balls and he popped out,"Gorzelanny said of his pitches to Bonds. "I was lucky to makesome good pitches he was out in front on. I felt like gettinghim out myself was a key after he got that first hit the otherway."

"Hopefully hitting the road here will be something we need rightnow," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of the team's 2-5homestand.

Barry Zito (8-11), signed to the highest contract for a pitcher(seven years, $126 million) in the offseason, had anothermediocre outing. Zito pitched six innings, allowing six hitsand three runs in taking the loss.

"He wants to do well here at home," Bochy said. "He wants toreciprocate a contract and sometimes that happens. It's notjust Zito but a lot of players but I thought he a nice job ofregrouping and we had a chance to win."

Zito actually pitched well considering he loaded the bases inthe first inning, throwing 32 pitches, but got out of itunscathed.

"I was feeling pretty down in the first, walking three guys, butafter that I got more comfortable making pitches," Zito said.

"I thought a better outing but a rough start there loading upthe bases but regrouping," Bochy said. "Barry had bettercommand today and pitched fairly well. He made a mistake latein the game for a home run but he kept the ball down better andhis confidence really started growing as the game went and Ithink an outing he should feel good about and build on."

In the second, Pittsburgh's Jose Castillo doubled to right andscored on an RBI single by Cesar Izturis.

In the sixth, Jason Bay with a single to left and Phelps crusheda fastball from Zito and deposited it into the bleachers inleft.

"I knew what to expect a little bit," said Phelps, who had facedZito when both played in the American League. "He threw a lotof high fastballs early in the game. He got us to chase and Iwas able to handle one of those high fastballs and it's what Iexpected. I thought he'd probably throw a few more breakingballs but with Zito out there you've got to go and strap it on."

"Phelps jumped on a heater kind of in but up though ... not aterrible pitch, not a great pitch, but other than that they hitsome good pitches for base hits but that was the difference inthe game," Zito said. "The guy on the other side (Gorzelanny)was pretty good today so not a lot of room for error."

In the seventh, after singles by Izturis and Jose Bautista,Phelps tripled off the center field wall increasing the lead to5-0.

"It's really nice when you have players like this (Phelps), whenyou're going to give a guy like Adam LaRoche a day off that canwalk in there and handle the situation in the manner in whichhe did today," Tracy said. "He's been a very, very goodaddition to our ballclub, there's no question about it inwhatever capacity it has been that we've asked him to do."

The Giants moved up the start time one hour because of atwi-night doubleheader on Monday in Pittsburgh to make up forconsecutive rainouts in April.
