Pineiro pitches gem as Cardinals blank Padres

ST LOUIS 5, SAN DIEGO 0
ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- Joel Pineiro and Rick Ankiel helped theSt. Louis Cardinals spoil Chris Young's return from the disabledlist.

Pineiro pitched seven scoreless innings and Ankiel belted hisfirst career home run to lift the Cardinals to a 5-0 victoryover the San Diego Padres on Thursday in the finale of afour-game series.

The 28-year-old Pineiro (1-1), who had not registered a win inover two months, yielded just four hits with no walks and fourstrikeouts in his longest outing of the season. The PuertoRican righthander was making just his second start of the yearafter being acquired by St. Louis at the July 31 non-waivertrade deadline from the Boston Red Sox.

"All the way around, I thought it was a great win for us,"Pineiro said. "You keep your damage to a minimum, keep yourpitch count low and you're going to be out there six or seveninnings. And I did that today." Pineiro did not allow a runnerto reach third base despite surrendering three doubles.

Ankiel, a former pitcher who is now an outfielder, gave theCardinals some breathing room in the seventh inning with athree-run shot into the right field stands, extending theadvantage to 5-0. The 28-year-old was recalled from Class AAAMemphis earlier Thursday.

Ankeil's blast came off Padres reliever Doug Brocail, who hadworked 7 2/3 scoreless innings and retired 23-of-25 batters inthat span before surrendering the homer.

"It's a special home run for me," Ankiel said. "I could nothave written that any better. I just can't put it into words. Ican't describe it. Unbelievable. That's a storybook dream."

"Short of winning the World Series, I think that's the happiestthat I've seen our club," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said."It's so emotional. He is such a special young man. For him todo that, in a close game, we needed every bit of those runs. What a moment."

Young (9-4), who was on the 15-day DL with a strained leftoblique, gave up four runs, three hits and five walks with fivestrikeouts in six-plus frames. The 6-10 All-Star righthander, who had not lost since May 12, entered the contest with a majorleague-best 1.82 ERA.

"It wasn't my best, it wasn't my worst," Young said. "Overall,I felt pretty good. No problems. I came out of it healthy, andthat's a step forward. Overall, I didn't feel like I pitchedthat poorly. Some timely mistakes on my part, but those happenover the course of the season."

Yadier Molina, who had three hits, gave St. Louis a 1-0 lead inthe fourth inning with a single to right field that scored ScottRolen.

"Today, we were playing like a team," Molina said. "I'm happyfor that." Scott Hairston, who left the game in the sixth inningwith strained left oblique, was the only Padre to record morethan one hit.

"That's discouraging," San Diego manager Bud Black said of theinjury. "It's almost in the identical spot that CY (Young)had."

It was just the Padres' third loss in their last eight games. They are 5-9 in their last 14 road contests.
