Rockies scratch out win over Padres

COLORADO 4, SAN DIEGO 2
By Tony Desiere
    PA SportsTicker Contributing Writer

DENVER (Ticker) - The Colorado Rockies managed only four hitsSunday, but their four runs were just enough to beat the Padres.

Fueled by Garrett Atkins' two-run home run and great defense, the Rockies beat the San Diego Padres, 4-2, at Coors Field, winning the series from their National League West Divisionrival.

Josh Fogg (9-9) scattered seven hits, giving up only one run infive innings. The Rockies bullpen finished the job, giving uponly one run to preserve the win.

"Josh had a good day," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "Hehad good command and I was glad to see him mix it up a bit. Notoften in this park will a three-run lead stand up, but he did agreat job making that happen."

"The guys behind me were outstanding," Fogg said. "I made somepitches today but when I missed a few, the guys made plays toget me out of the inning."

The Padres are now three games behind Arizona in the NL West andtwo games in front of Philadelphia in the wild card race.

San Diego starter Chris Young (9-7) was inconsistent with hiscontrol, but gave up only two hits and struck out eight in fiveinnings. He also walked five and gave up three runs.

"I was better today than I have been," Young said. "I made somemistakes early and we got in a hole. Unfortunately we could notget out of it. There were times I lost my mechanics but asidefrom that, I thought I threw the ball pretty well."

Colorado scored three runs off Young in the in the first inning. With two outs, Young hit Matt Holliday, who proceeded to stealsecond base. He was driven home on an RBI single by ToddHelton. Atkins capped the inning with a homer to left-centerfield to give the Rockies an early 3-0 lead.

"That pitch to Atkins would have been a ball," Young said."Sometimes you just got to tip your hat. They are a good hittingteam. You kind of expect to give up runs, because they aregood."

The Rockies defense helped Fogg keep the Padres off thescoreboard early on. With two on and one out in the fourthinning, Morgan Ensberg tried to score on a double to left byMichael Barrett. Holliday tracked down the ball, threw toshortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who fired a dart to the plate to getEnsberg.

They weren't finished. Young hit a two-out single to centerfield later in the inning. With Barrett running on the hit,Rockies center fielder Ryan Spilborghs came up throwing to theplate. Chris Ianetta made the tag and the Rockies got out of theinning giving up only one run.

"With first and second and two outs, with the pitcher at theplate, I was playing a bit more shallow," Spilborghs said. "Igot a good jump and was able to throw the guy out. Great way toend the inning."

"We were playing good aggressive baseball," Black said. "Weforced the Rockies to make plays and they did. Tulowitzki made agreat through and Spilborghs did too, but we forced them tomake those plays and they did."

The Padres rallied in the eighth inning. After a walk toEnsberg, Brian Fuentes gave up back-to-back singles as thePadres cut the lead to 3-2. Manny Corpas came on in relief andproceed to get Brian Myrow to ground into the inning-endingdouble play.

"That was huge," Hurdle said. "We needed something to happenthere and Manny got the ground ball. You take those when theyare given and we were lucky to get that one."

Holliday hit his 26th home run of the year, leading off thebottom of the eighth inning, to get the run back.

Helton had two hits in the game, including a double in the sixthinning, becoming the first player in major league history tohave 10 consecutive seasons with 35 or more doubles.

It's a great honor, Helton said. When you do something that noone has ever done, it's a huge accomplishment. I'm just thankfulthat I have been healthy for this long to be out there on thefield.

Red-hot Rockies take on Peavy in one-game tiebreaker

San Diego (89-73) at Colorado (89-73) 7:30 pm

DENVER (Ticker) -- The Colorado Rockies' recent hot play has themon the verge of ending a 12-year playoff drought.

Unfortunately, they may run into a brick wall when the they faceJake Peavy and the San Diego Padres in a one-game playoff forthe National League wild card on Monday.

The Rockies, led by National League MVP candidate Matt Holliday, won 13 of their final 14 games to pull even with San Diego, which needed just a win Saturday or Sunday against the MilwaukeeBrewers to clinch the wild card but couldn't get it.

After San Diego dropped an 11-6 decision Sunday, the Rockiesscored three runs in the eighth inning to snap a 1-1 tie beforeholding on for a 4-3 victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Colorado won a coin toss this week and will host the seventhone-game playoff in baseball history, and the first since theNew York Mets beat the Cincinnati Reds, 5-0, in 1999.

"The craziness isn't over, we get to play 163," Rockies managerClint Hurdle said. "We're happy about it. We're very happyabout it."

They won't be happy about facing likely Cy Young Award winnerPeavy (19-6), who leads the league in wins, strikeouts and ERA.

"Peavy is tough, he's obviously the front-runner for the CyYoung," said Colorado right fielder Brad Hawpe, who drove inthree runs Sunday and finished the season on fire, going21-for-45 with 20 RBI in his last 11 games. "We've got a goodchallenge in front of us. But we've had some success against himbefore, and you know he's going to bring his 'A' game."

The righthander is 10-1 with a 2.20 ERA in his last 14 starts, and he allowed eight of the 21 runs allowed in the stretch inone start in which he pitched on three days rest.

Peavy is 0-0 with a 1.29 ERA in two starts vs. Colorado thisseason, the last outing coming last Friday when the 26-year-oldallowed one run and three hits in seven innings with eightstrikeouts.

"It's going to be fun," Peavy said. "We're starting the playoffswith Game Seven. I'm excited about the opportunity, and I thinkthe boys will come out battling and fighting hard. The seasonis on the line. You play 162 and you still need one more todecide it. You're going home, or you're in."

While San Diego is looking for its third straight trip to thepostseason, Colorado is counting on a strong performance fromJosh Fogg (10-9, 4.79) for its first and only trip to theplayoffs since 1995.

Fogg is unbeaten in his last six starts and is 1-1 with a 6.28ERA in three starts vs. San Diego this season. For his career,Fogg is 3-2 with a 4.54 ERA in six starts against the Padres.

"They know me and I know them. It's a matter of me making mypitches and they take bad swings," Fogg said. "We're glad it'sat home, that's for sure. We like playing here, we're alreadyhere and we don't have to worry about traveling anywhere.

"There's probably a handful of people in the world that havepitched in a game of this magnitude. I'll go out there with thebest stuff I have tomorrow and we'll see what happens."

The team's split the season series, 9-9, but the Rockies will betough to beat here since they tied for the best home mark inthe NL at 51-30.

"They're hot," Peavy said. "They're as good as anybody inbaseball, but they are a beatable team. They play toughbaseball at home, but if I go in there and execute and we scoreand have good at-bats, I think we'll come out victorious."
